@Steve, This is a very interesting way to analyze a team but I’d say you did well for yourself as long as your SF doesn’t get injured. PF is pretty deep, so even if one of those guys doesn’t pan out you should be able to pick something off of the wire.

      • Steve says:
        (link)

@James Redacted, Thought I’d give you a tricky one.

        However, here with names.

        PG: Paul, Dragic, Lillard, Walker
        SG: Thompson, Gee
        SF: George, Roy
        PF: Humphries, Davis
        C: Jefferson, Bargnani, Asik, Mullens

        • James Redacted

          James Redacted says:
          (link)

@Steve, Yep, I stand by my original assesment. Going a little deeper… looks like blocks is your weak spot. Definitely strong in the small ball categories with Bargs and Mullens in there. Hopefully Asik won’t completely tank in FT%.

          • Steve says:
            (link)

@James Redacted, Definitely my weak spot. But there wasn’t any C I wanted in the middle of the round (like Anderson/Lee – anyway no blocks – instead of George. Gortat and Hibbert went a couple of picks before Thompson). Monroe was an option but I choose Dragic to back up CP3 and assists. Didn’t want to end up with the Boom or Bust tier as my second PG.
Someone actually offered me Gortat for George but no thanks.

            • James Redacted

              James Redacted says:

@Steve, Good logic there. I like Monroe slightly better than Dragic but I agree you take him there to back up CP3. I like Gortat as well but if you’re a George believer (I am!) then you might as well keep him because there’s a more upside.

          • Fahed says:
            (link)

            @Zebo

It’s a 12 team league, my quad as of now looks like this. Bynum, Monroe, Durant, Irving, Klay Thompson, Milsap, Teague, Bradley Beal, Ariza. Bogut and Rose both on IR.

            We are playing Pts/Reb/Ast/Stls/Blks/Fg%/ft%/3pm.

How do you think I can further improve my team? I do need anothe pf. We are playing all 5 positions and 2 utilities. 4 on bench and 3 IR spots(which I really regret putting in)

            • James Redacted

              James Redacted says:
              (link)

@Fahed, I’d drop Ariza for someone who can give you some big man stats (BLK) until Bogut is healthy. Omer Asik available? Also, make sure you clarify H2H or Roto. If you’re in H2H then I’d ignore blocks and go for high %’s along with 3’s, STL, AST, REB. Don’t tweak too much until the season starts, but I’d feel confident dropping Ariza if someone decent is on the wire.

              • Fahed says:
                (link)

                @James Redacted,

I actually have asik..part of a trade coming ot me, I was going to drop him. It is h2h..winner of more categories gets the win for the week. So that takes asik out but I should still drop ariza for….Im thinking Novak is my man.

                • Fahed says:
                  (link)

                  @Fahed, Or maybe Byron Mullens

@Fahed, I would hold onto Asik to see if he blossoms into something good for trade value. Ariza is the one to drop and yeah I think I’d drop him for Mullens over Novak. You pretty much know all you’re getting from Novak is 3’s… with Mullens there might be something else there.

    • Richie says:
      (link)

@Fahed, There’s no way you should be able to get Irving, Bynum, Durant, and Millsap in a 12 team league. Irving and Durant are both going in the first round, with Bynum and Millsap going in the second. I wouldn’t be too excited about a league with people that don’t know how to play fantasy basketball.

      • Fahed says:
        (link)

@Richie, I did it through smooth talking and smooth trading, In our league Bynum went in the First round also. I basically gave away Anthony Davis and Ilysava for Irving and Asik, then some idoit with too many centers offered me Bynum and Jr smith for Dragic and Harrison Barnes…I couldn’t say no. We have a voting system intact and people just didn’t pay attention. I’m ready to rock this.

  3. Pavel says:
    (link)

My strategy was to draft a team by trying to only get players from the middle rounds (so save money basically) here is this team:
    1. Stephen Curry (GS – PG) $3
    2. Amar’e Stoudemire (NY – PF,C) $21
    3. Ersan Ilyasova (Mil – PF) $19
    4. Danilo Gallinari (Den – SF) $19
    5. Joakim Noah (Chi – PF,C) $20
    6. Tony Parker (SA – PG) $17
    7. Carlos Boozer (Chi – PF,C) $15
    8. Jrue Holiday (Phi – PG) $15
    9. Roy Hibbert (Ind – C) $15
    10. Wesley Matthews (Por – SG,SF) $13
    11. John Wall (Was – PG) $29
    12. Kevin Martin (Hou – SG) $7
    13. Thaddeus Young (Phi – SF,PF) $5

What do you think of this strategy?

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:
      (link)

@Pavel, Yeah, this is the balanced strategy as opposed to stars and scrubs. It’s completely viable and it’s effectiveness can vary from draft to draft depending on the deals. As far as your draft goes, if this is a 12 team draft then you really made out. Everyone must have been petrified of Stephen Curry for you to get him at $3. There are some risks on there (Curry, Stoudemire, Wall, and even Martin) but this should be a championship caliber team. This is basically a best case scenario for the balanced strategy.

      • Pavel says:
        (link)

@James Redacted, Thanks James. i don’t foresee having curry go that low, but that’s why I figure I would have used the money on either wall or curry (cumulative $32). This was a 14 team draft and I have a 16 team draft coming up on sunday. Since it would be 16 teams and 15 players per team, that’s 240 drafted. And we know anything in the +180 player range are just scraps. So I figure I need to save money in such a draft to get bargains and contributing type players. What do you think? Would you try the same strategy in a larger league, or would you do a stars/scrubs (knowing that scrubs will be really bad)?

        • James Redacted

          James Redacted says:
          (link)

@Pavel, 14 team? Hope it was a $$ league, haha. In a deeper leagues (14+ teams) I do like the balanced approach better. It’s just so much more devastating if you get an injury or if someone has a bust year. One word of advice for the 14 team league you just drafted – I usually like to have 1 flexible bench spot at all times to pick up a hot player and see if they pan out. In your league, you don’t really have a flexible spot because Thad Young might be pretty good this year (esp. in a 14 teamer). This is where I try to do 2 for 1’s to upgrade at a spot and free up that bench slot. Just a thought. Good luck!

  4. HighUpside says:
    (link)

Yo, so what do you think of Markieff Morris this year? In only 19 mpg last season (his rookie) he averaged .7 3s/stls/blks per game. Backing up an old and one dimensional Scola. Do you like him?

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:
      (link)

@HighUpside, I know Scola is old and completely unsexy but he still has some value and makes 4 million compared to Morris’ 2 million. I’d look for Morris to factor in after a couple months if/when the suns stop dreaming about a playoff appearance (or if there’s an injury). So, yes I like him but not for drafting. This is a situation to keep an eye on.

  5. Nick says:
    (link)

Bold (insane) Prediction: Kanter averages nearly a double double in only 20 minutes a night. Give me him over Amanda Bynes’ boys any day…

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:
      (link)

@Nick, Be careful about preseason lines. Kanter definitely has potential but I dont think we see it unless Utah trades someone in the frontcourt. 20 minutes will lead to some erratic lines.

      • Nick says:
        (link)

@James Redacted, I prefaced the prediction as “bold (insane)”….that said, I’ll stand by it.

  6. Richie says:
    (link)

I noticed you omitted Michael Beasley from your SF tiers. Where would he slide in?

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:
      (link)

@Richie, I have him in the “Macy’s Catalog Models” tier for PF. For many multi-position guys I just have to choose a position and stick with it. He’s a bit like Rashard Lewis in that he’s 6’10 so you would think he’d play PF but his game probably fits more of a SF role. If I had to put him in SF I’d put him in the “Gangnam Style!” tier. He goes through stretches where it looks like he finally gets it but then he nosedives. Potential is still there though.

      • Richie says:
        (link)

@James Redacted, You know, I didn’t even realize that he was 6’10”. I thought he was around 6’7″ or 6’8″. He must have grown since he was drafted or I just never paid attention to that. I think he has some nice upside this year as he’ll be relied on to score a lot in Phoenix.

        • James Redacted

          James Redacted says:
          (link)

@Richie, He is definitely worth a late round flyer. If he can get PT like he did in the 2010-2011 he will help alot of fantasy owners. I may be a little bit low on him.

  7. Diego A. says:
    (link)

Hey guys. I have a Roto 9 man league. I forgot to attend the draft so the picks are purely AI.

    Wade ; Batum ; Jennings ; Ginobli ; Aldridge ; Horford ; R. Anderson ; Varejao ; Gallo ; Teague ; Nelson ; Isaiah Thomas ; Dudley

but there are still players available on the waivers that might be better (Collison, Favors, W. Chandler, Ariza, Calderon, George Hill, Kaman, Hickson, Bass, J Rich, Turk, Hawes, Wright, Rush, Asik, K. Leonard) should I drop or add anyone?

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:
      (link)

@Diego A., Blocks are going to be a problem. I’d probably drop Dudley for Asik and Nelson for Hill or Collison. You have alot of good FT shooters so the hit you may take from Asik should be minimal. Otherwise this team should be pretty solid.

      • Diego A. says:
        (link)

        @James Redacted,

Hey James. A friend offered me Steph Curry and OJ Mayo for Dwayne Wade. What should I do? If I accept it I have to drop one more player. And i picked up Asik and Collison btw. Dudley and Nelson are no longer on my squad

        • James Redacted

          James Redacted says:
          (link)

@Diego A., keep wade. I do not like trading away the best player in the deal unless the offer is heavily favored for you. The 2 for 1 is a tactic to convince the other owner that quantity beats quality. It does not. Especially not for top 20 players because the league is top heavy.

          • Diego A. says:
            (link)

            @James Redacted,

Another friend offered me Wade and Gallo for P. Gasol and Gay

              James Redacted says:
              (link)

@Diego A., I like Gasol better than wade and Gay a ton better than Gallo. I would accept. Nice trade for you.

If you draft kd with the second pick, how would you draft around him?

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:
      (link)

@jleeishere, The great thing about KD (and Bron) is that he doesn’t force you into drafting a particular way. He is so versatile that you can go any direction you want. I’d just go best available for my next pick.

  9. timmy riggins says:
    (link)

Hi, havent played in a while. Do you have any sound strategies for a snake draft? Is one position deeper than another, certain positions to draft early, mid, late? Thanks

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:
      (link)

@timmy riggins, Ah the good ole snake draft. The deepest positions this year are PG and PF. The weakest is SG. In the back end of the snake draft if you don’t get a SG in round 1 or 2 (Harden or Wade) I’d wait until round 6 or so to draft one of Martin, Thompson, Matthews. I tend to go best available until round 6-7 and then start going for value and reaching for favorite sleepers (unless I draft someone like Howard, then I need to draft a bit differently). The key is to make tiers like in this post and try to grab guys when they are the last in their tier to maximize the value of your pick. Here is a loose blueprint to follow: rds 1,2,3: best avail; rds 4,5: PG, C; rd 6:SG; rds 7+: Value picks and sleepers. I find that a lot of PG and C will go in rounds 4-6 so it’s best to grab one there if you are lacking in those positions. Also, after your first 3 rounds you can identify what type of stats you are strong/weak in and draft the players that will complement you (this will change depending on H2H and Roto). In H2H you can target 6 out of 9 cats to dominate in rather than having to worry about being more balanced in roto. Good luck!

      • timmy riggins says:
        (link)

@James Redacted, Hi, can you please let me know who I should cut from my team and where I need to improve? Thanks

        3rd pick 14-team league H2H. i panicked more than a few times…

        PG – CP3 (1)
        SG – Kevin Martin (5)
        G – Jeff Teague (7)
        SF – Kawhi Leonard (10)
        PF – Paul Millsap (2)
        F – Kris Humphries (6)
        C – Bosh (3) – people snickered
        C – Roy Hibbert (4)
        Util – D. Lillard (8)

Bench – Byron Mullens (9), Omer Asik (11), Jeremy Lamb (12), Kevin Seraphin (13)

intriguing guys on waivers: Chandler Parsons, Thomas Robinson, Bayless, Marshon Brooks, Kasta Koufos, Shannon Brown, Amir Johnson, James Johnson, Randy Foye, Carlos Delfino

        Thanks!

        • James Redacted

          James Redacted says:
          (link)

@timmy riggins, Parsons should be owned in a 14 teamer. Drop Lamb for him. Lamb won’t factor in much this year on OKC.

Now your team… Bosh in the 3rd in this league isn’t very exciting because he doesn’t have much upside. However, he has an extremely high floor so it should be a very safe pick (I will admit, a slight reach…prob should go around pick 40). You did get steals with Millsap in the 2nd, Lillard in the 8th, and Leonard in the 10th. I also love Hibbert where you got him as well. This should be a competitive team in a 14 teamer that is solid across the board. I may look at trading Hibbert if Asik doesn’t pan out because you will not have much use for blocks.

          • timmy riggins says:
            (link)

@James Redacted, thanks for the great analysis. can you please elaborate on, ” I may look at trading Hibbert if Asik doesn’t pan out because you will not have much use for blocks.” Thanks again!

            • James Redacted

              James Redacted says:
              (link)

@timmy riggins, In a H2H league, it can be beneficial to punt certain categories and focus on winnings 5 out of 9 every week. If Asik turns out to be a bust, the blocks that Hibbert gives you will be less valuable because you probably won’t win blocks most weeks with 1 shot blocker. It would be better to trade Hibbert and strengthen your other categories.

  10. Thirteen says:
    (link)

    Here’s my team in a 10-team H2H league:

    25. Dwyane Wade (Mia – PG, SG) $51
    44. LaMarcus Aldridge (Por – PF, C) $42
    45. Pau Gasol (LAL – PF, C) $29
    48. Danny Granger (LAL – PF, C) $20
    49. Paul Millsap (Uta – PF) $26
    54. Monta Ellis (Mil – PG, SG) $18
    91. Luol Deng (Chi – SF) $4
    94. Brook Lopez (Bkn – C) $3
    97. Zach Randolph (Mem – PF, C) $2
    98. Kris Humprhies (Bkn – PF) $1
    102. Carlos Boozer (Chi – PF, C) $2
    105. Kevin Martin (Hou – SG) $2

My initial strategy was to go stars and scrubs, but after the bidding for LeBron and Durant passed the $100 mark, I backed out. I guess I ended up going with a more balanced approach.

    What are your thoughts?

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:
      (link)

@Thirteen, $200 budget? You made the right move to go balanced after the market was set SO high. This is a championship caliber team and some of the deals you got are awesome. assists are your only real weak spot but that is fine in h2h. You should dominate in Pts, Reb, Stl, %’s while being competitive in 3’s and blocks. Advice – if you don’t have a flexible spot on your roster (I would argue you don’t with Humphries being the worst) then make a 2 for 1 trade so that you upgrade a position and open up a spot to pick up a hot player. You don’t want to be hesitant to pick up a guy tearing it up cause you have too much value sitting on your bench. Don’t force a trade but explore your options =)

      • Thirteen says:
        (link)

@James Redacted, Yeah, $200 budget, and thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely look to explore trade options.

Another question for you: what does the Harden trade do Martin’s fantasy value? Does he slip into your “Biting my toenails” tier?

        • James Redacted

          James Redacted says:

@Thirteen, Tough call because I’m not sure if Martin will slide into the starting lineup or come off the bench since he is a very different player from Harden. This is a situation to monitor and I’d slide him to the back of his current tier due to uncertainty. Is 12 million going to come off the bench? Either way Martin is a shooter and should get his.

          • Thirteen says:
            (link)

@James Redacted, That makes sense. I’m guessing Martin might be the first player off the bench and still see minutes in the high 20’s to low 30’s. But, you do make a good point about the big (expiring) contract he has. I’m sure the Thunder will want to prove that they made a good trade and that they got a good player in return for Harden.

Sorry to keep bugging you, but I have more questions. Are there any particular 2 for 1 trades you would recommend? Whom would you target for the upgrade? For example, what would be a reasonable offer for LeBron/KD? I’d be willing to take a small hit in a trade for the extra roster spot, since I’m only in a 10 team league. Are there any other players in the early rounds that it might make sense for me to target in a 2 for 1?

              James Redacted says:
              (link)

@Thirteen, I’d aim for top 20 players that fit the stats you need. Bron/Kd would be optimal (especially KD cause you don’t need assists). However this close to the draft, people will be adding up the $$ you paid at the draft and compare what they paid for KD. With them passing the $100 mark I doubt you get them so table it for now. How much did Horford go for? He would be a nice complement for your team and has typically been undervalued.

              • Thirteen says:
                (link)

@James Redacted, Horford went for $35.

Here are the top 20, using the site’s rankings:
                Bron ($102), KD ($102), Love ($40), Paul ($73), Wade ($51), Westbrook ($72), Smith ($49), Howard ($49), Pau ($29), Jefferson ($56), Cousins ($25), D-Will ($54), Bynum ($49), Aldridge ($42), Melo ($44), Kobe ($51), Horford ($35), Marc Gasol ($37), Griffin ($34), Ellis ($18)

              • Thirteen says:
                (link)

@James Redacted, Also, I was just offered Curry for Ellis straight up. Pull the trigger? I love Curry’s upside, but his ankle scares me.

@Thirteen, I have Ellis slightly higher than Curry. Ankle scares me too much. Plus you don’t need the assists.

@James Redacted, Since everybody bid up the top tier players, it looks like you’re gonna have to wait a week or two before trading into the top 20. Keep an eye out for those buy lows and owners that tend to panic trade.

@Moe, I would not make this trade. The hidden thing here is that you have to drop someone off your squad while the other guy gets to add someone which will most times favor the team that gets to add a player. Also, almost never trade Bron or Durant unless you are receiving a top 10 player in return. They are that good.

Should be a strong team and its crazy that your league has that many bench spots. In a shallow league like this make sure you try to upgrade using 2 for 1 trades and staying active on the wire to pick up the hot player.

It doesn’t lok like you guys have any keeper rankings up yet this year, unless I’m just not seeing them. Any recommendations for a good site for keeper ranks? I’ve got a keeper draft tonight so I’m trying to brush up a bit.

@A Hill O Beans, Yea we don’t have any up. I also don’t know who to recommend because I dont put much stock in keeper ranks. I usually draft to win this year and then worry about keepers later on in the season if I’m out of the running. I suggest trying some of the sites located on the right side of the basketball homepage. If you have some specific keeper questions I’d be happy to answer them.

      • A Hill O Beans says:

@James Redacted, Thanks! Who do you like with the #5 pick in a keeper? H2H with Off Reb and AST 2 TO Ratio as extra categories? I’m a little torn between a few guys.

          James Redacted says:
          (link)

@A Hill O Beans, Assuming bron/kd/paul are first 3, Kevin Love would def be my #1 option at 5 if your league mates get scared off by the injury. Besides that, I think it’s Westbrook or Howard. I say Howard only if you are willing to punt FT and build your team that way. Who are you torn between? Personally, I think Irving is too risky to take at 5 if that is one you are considering. Westbrook has already performed at an exceptionally high level.

          • A Hill O' Beans says:

@James Redacted, I went with Westbrook in the end, although I was very close to taking Howard.

It’s a deeper league than most of the leagues I’ve been in, and it’s my first basketball keeper so honestly I’m not sure how it turned out. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on it though.

@A Hill O’ Beans, Yea Howard can be difficult to build around if everyone else snipes your players. Looks like you got some great value with Horford, Monroe, and Lowry. What kind of keeper is it? Keep 4? Regardless I like this team although you will be lacking in blocks and assists some, which is prob why you drafted a bunch of blocks guys with your later picks. Good thing you have a deep bench so you can keep players like Drummond around a bit longer than normal. He’s got a ton of potential that may not show immediately. Stay active on the wire (especially if a PG pops up) and you should have a very competitive team.

    • James Redacted

      James Redacted says:

@asdkfjaskdjf, Pretty balanced team, especially if Lillard pans out (although blocks will be lacking). Wilson Chandler is the name that sticks out for me but there isn’t anyone I’d drop for him right now. Try and work some 2 for 1 trades to upgrade a position and allow you to pick up some FA’s. Don’t force it tho. There’s plenty of time to wheel and deal.

      • asdkfjaskdjf says:
        (link)

@James Redacted, Okay, thanks a lot. If I can get it, should I trade Lee and Hill for Rondo? Also, why do you like Chandler more than Hickson or Allen? Thanks!

        • James Redacted

          James Redacted says:
          (link)

@asdkfjaskdjf, I am not a Rondo fan for fantasy. He helps you in REB, AST, and STL and that’s about it. So I would not do that trade. I like Chandler because he has produced in the past (2010-2011 season). Hickson has been given opportunities before and has not produced outside of rebounds and points (not to mention he will be at least the 4th scoring option in portland). Tony Allen helps you in steals, and that’s it. Hope that helps.

@HotRod, Weaknesses – Blocks/Assists (Prob 3’s as well unless Mullens goes out of his mind, lol), Strengths – PTS/REB/STL/FT%. When Bogut gets healthy, I’d look to trade him so that he doesn’t tank your FT% and because you are not going to have a block centric team. In a perfect world it would be a high FG% guard or forward that knocks down the occasional 3.

@reckoner, You have a plethora of upside players and depending on if they boom or bust, that is how your team is going to go (very exciting team though). I’m curious if there is someone better than Tony Allen on the wire to start at SF for you. Don’t panic trade if some of these guys start out slow.

      • @James Redacted, Thanks for the input – looking at your tiers above, Jeff Green and Chandler Parsons are both on the wire. I took Allen knowing he would only one-dimensionally bolster my steals and not kill me in any other categories, but could be willing to drop him for one of those guys if you think they’d fit better…

        • James Redacted

          James Redacted says:
          (link)

@reckoner, I hate pointing at preseason numbers but Jeff Green has been eye-opening and with the Celtics aging a bit, I think Green gets some burn. I believe he returns to a top 75 player this year after his unfortunate circumstances last year, so yeah I like Green’s contributions more than Allen’s steals. I may be a little high on Parsons but if he can win the starting job from Delfino, he will give some good production at the SF position. Keep an eye on the Delfino/Parsons position battle.
