The preseason is upon us! And just like how you don’t put too much stock in Spring Training or the NFL Preseason – there isn’t anything to go too crazy about with what happens in the box scores. However, some guys do get hurt, hurt guys can show they’re back, and there’s additional news to spruce up everyone’s rankings (my updated top 200 is below and broken down by position in the menu). But before you scroll down! We really need some RCL commissioners to start up new leagues to show me just how bad my rankings are. The winner gets their name shaved in my head for god’s sake! Please don’t make it anything too profane… I don’t want to tell the barber he has to put @$%#% somewhere in my scalp! Rather than belaboring current events and more RCL pandering, let’s just hop right in:
Russell Westbrook – Another day, another knee surgery. Yikes. I hate drafting players coming into the year with knee injuries (exacerbated by the whole 2012-13 Derrick Rose fiasco) and for a guy like Westbrook to need the same knee he tore up last postseason get knife treatment is no beuno. As I mentioned on The Double Bonus Sports Radio Show in our Western Conference Preview, I moved KD to one (probably should’ve always been #1, but hey, I’ve got it right now) and Westbrook way down. Helps my high Serge Ibaka rank as well. Moves Reggie Jackson pretty high into my rankings.
Chase Budinger – More knee surgeries – more guys to avoid. Dropped him out of my top 200. I liked Corey Brewer heading into the ranks before the Budinger injury and like him even more with the starting gig.
Derrick Rose – OOHHHH MMYYY GOOOODDDDD!!!!! He played!!!!! For the about 100 comments last year when I took over in February, I’m sorry my answer for Rose’s return date wasn’t October. 13 Pts and 3 Asts in 20 minutes on Saturday and 13 Pts and 3 Asts in 23 minutes on Monday. Mirror effect! 2 then 3 steals for 5 total thus far as well. He’s back!
Anthony Bennett – Apparently Bennett playing in scrimmage was like watching the long shot in The Biggest Loser.
Jimmy Butler – Went 1-4 in 29 minutes but 9-12 from the line in Friday’s preseason opener? Say whaaaa? Along with 11 Pts added 6 Rebs, 2 Asts, 3 Stls and a Blk. Rainbow lines a’comin’!
Danny Granger – 2-10 in his first 28 minutes of the preseason. Brandon Roy called him after the game with retirement 401K advice.
Dwight Howard – 19-9 in his Houston debut. The most shocking stat so far in the preseason? Dwight is 7-11 from the stripe.
Klay Thompson – Played a whopping 37 minutes in the Warriors preseason debut – and off the bench at that. Hit 11-18 but only 2-7 from deep. Stephen Curry barely played in the opener. KT then went 8-17 and 0-3 from deep last night. Still not a huge fan.
Ben McLemore – 4-8 and hit three threes on six attempts in his NBA preseason debut. A 13/3/1/2/2 slash neared a rainbow line, but did have 4 TOs in 24 minutes. Think he will be solid, but not reaching.
Xavier Henry – Put up 29 and 7 in 26 minutes for a Lakers team without Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol in the Lakers’ Saturday preseason opener. Followed it up with a 4-7 game for 15/3/0/1/1 in 24 minutes on Sunday. He’s in a crowd of 2/3 guys for playing time and this won’t do much to help that – but worth noting. Also helps Henry’s case to be on your radar with Wesley Johnson hurt.
James Anderson – Looking like the starting 2 on the Sixers. Which is worth about a 0.8. Math!
JaVale McGee – Still has upside, but in 16 minutes on Sunday’s preseason opener, 3 TOs and 4 fouls. Watching McGee is like seeing a lanky 14-year old kid play with AAU 10-year olds.
Ty Lawson – 7-10 15 Pts 10 Reb and 6 Ast in debut. Obvious that Lawson will lead the NBA in rebounding.
Steve Nash – Played 22 minutes in his preseason debut on Sunday and didn’t score. Did nab 6 boards and dish 5 dimes, but man, tough to be too optimistic on him still.
Pau Gasol – Waited until Sunday’s leg of back-to-back preseason openers as well, and was a bit rusty going 4-13 with 4 boards and 13 points in 22 minutes. He’s going to provide nice value this year though.
Nicolas Batum – Played a lot of minutes in EuroBasket and came out with a sore back. Still played in the Blazers opener and went 12/3/2 with three TOs no steals and no blocks in 27 minutes. Probably won’t end up on any of my teams.
LaMarcus Aldridge – Sat out last night’s Blazers opener. Still worried about a trade down the line a lot more than this minor quad injury.
Jrue Holiday – 8 turnovers in the Pelicans debut Saturday then 4 on Monday. His ball handling is about as slick as a BP oil spill.
Anthony Davis – 11-19 25/7/0/1/1 on Monday after scoring 21 in Saturday’s opener. You’ve been uni-browed!
C.J. McCollum – Fractured his foot and will miss significant time. I didn’t have him in my top-200, and the fallout didn’t have me tweak my rankings too much. Slightly more run for Mo Williams is possible and keep your eye on Will Barton who I thought looked good in a few games last year.
Otto Porter – Isn’t even running yet. I probably wasn’t drafting him this year even after the original rankings, not touching him most likely even in deeper leagues now.
Martell Webster – Is the biggest benefactor with Porter’s hip injury. I imagine the hip specialist seeing “Otto Porter” coming into his practice with a hip injury had him immediately picturing a 90-year-old.
Jonas Valanciunas – Luminescent Lithuanian! 5-7 for 10 points with 10 boards, 2 assists and 2 blocks. But he did foul out in 27 minutes in the Raptors’ preseason opener. Don’t play too rough!
DeMar DeRozan – 0-3 from deep in the Raptors’ opener. So much for the improving perimeter game! Hoping my call on him stands – would like to see him get hot in a preseason game.
DeMarre Carroll – Just wanted to go back-to-back DeMar[re]s. 10/4/2/3/1 in preseason debut. Think he has deep league value as a mini 5-cat guy.
Paul Millsap – 6-10 for 12 Pts and 3 Reb in Hawks debut in 24 minutes. Will be a great fit in that offense.
Carlos Boozer – 7-12 for 16 Pts with 4 Reb in preseason debut on Monday. Still one of my least favorite players in real life – but I maintain he’s a little overlooked in fantasy this year.
Brandan Wright – 7-8 in the Mavericks opener on Monday for 14 Pts in 19 minutes. Think he’ll be a nice asset in deeper leagues. Notice how I like the Tar Hell and not the Dookie?
DeAndre Jordan – 6-9 for 16 Pts 8 Reb 1 Ast and 4 Blks. Plus an absurd 4-5 from the FT line. Man – if only he could do that every night…
Glen Davis – Sometimes the comedy takes care of itself. Per Rotoworld/Orlando Sentinel – “Glen Davis (foot) has been dieting and taking yoga classes as he prepares for the season. He’s eating six to seven small meals a day and doing yoga at 5:15 a.m. in a 100 degree room.”
