Wooo, preseason is here!  We finally get to see players on the court, thennnn, pretty much immediately we have season-ending injuries…  Just let athletes take steroids again, eesh!  Tired of this nonsense!

In literally the second game of the preseason, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist slipped on just a routine perimeter dribble and dislocated his shoulder.  It looked like he might’ve slipped on some sweat, those are some slacking Magic ball boys!  Then after an MRI yesterday, it revealed a torn labrum (true story, it had a red underline underneath “labrum” which had me being sure I spelled it right, and the suggested fix was labium) and he’ll likely need season-ending surgery.  Yikes.  Tough shakes for the Hornets who just invested $52 mil over 4 years in the guy (THAT’S MORE THAN MONTA ELLIS!), and have nothing great to fill-in SF minutes.  Well, I guess technically SG minutes, as Nicolas Batum should slot back to SF as the Hornets hodgepodge their SG.  Jeremy Lin had a nice 17/2/7 debut in that first game on Saturday, but followed it up with 10/3/1 and 4 TO on Sunday.  Jeremy Lamb scored 16 in the debut and got the start Sunday, only to shoot 2-11 in 25 yawnstipating minutes.  P.J. Hairston also got a start Sunday as Batum got that game off, and shot 1-7 missing all 5 treys.  Then there’s also Marvin Williams, who has reportedly lost weight and was rumored to get SF minutes back in July, but he figures to be more of a Batum backup or a small stretch-4 like last year.  I really don’t like any of these guys, and none of them vault into the draftable range for me in 12ers.  I guess in deepers I’d grab Lin first, but meh.  The only actionable impact for me is MKG’s 15-16 death.  “This guy here is dead!”  “Well cross him off then!”  Here’s what else has happened through the first few nights of preseason as we prepare for the 2015-16 Fantasy Basketball season:

Joffrey Lauvergne Let’s start our preseason daily notes with an irrelevant player!  Haha, I keed, the toolsy, tall PF/C slash Italian dish started strong going 16/11 shooting 7-10 from the field.  Didn’t really do much else though…  It’s a vegetarian lasagna!

Will Barton I’ve always been a fan of his, and had a game high 13 boards against the Clippers.  Yes, even with DeAndre Jordan playing more minutes.  More just a fun stat oddity, Barton is no more than a backup wing who boards.

Gary Harris Played 29 minutes in the opener, and the only interesting thing he did was swipe 4 steals.  It’s possible he works his way into the starting SG role, but it would be a pretty low-minutes opportunity.

Nikola Jokic With everyone’s favorite Jamba Jus still out and possibly missing games to start the year, Jokic could find a role and went 14/8/0/1/1 on 6-8 shooting in 23 minutes.  The Nugs started the ghost of J.J. Hickson, who looked ghastly shooting 1-7 with 3 TO and was out of shape.  Although Jokic fouled out in his 23 minutes…  Yikes, this is going to be a bad position until Nurk is close to 100%.  Stream your fringy bigs against the Nuggets early!

Emmanuel Mudiay Way to bury the lead for the Nugs!  The stat line was MCW-esque, but he at least looked like an NBA player out there.  5-18 FG (blehhhh) and 8 TO (explosive diarrhea of the dribble).  Still outside my top-100.

Victor Oladipo Shined for 16/5/3/1/0 shooting 6-8 FG (1-1 3PTM 3-3 FT) with no TO.  Just remember, after MKG went down, Lin was likely playing a little D on him.  And by little D, I mean a lil D!

Andrew Nicholson – The king of the flat foot jumper, Nicholson shocked with a 23/8/2 line shooting 9-14.  Since he’s not known as a defender, I’m pretty sure Skiles doesn’t know his name…

Frank Kaminsky Frank was stank in his debut (7/4/0/0/1 with 3 TO in under 10 minutes), but was much better against the Heat for 9/11/3.  All his points came on treys, but he shot 3-11.  Meh.

Paul George Said he was “uncomfortable” after playing PF.  Hey PG13, why don’t you shut your stinkin’ trap and make this a fantasy-friendly offense already, mmmkkk?!  No one wants to see a team starting Jordan Hill at PF!  Although, maybe they could start Turner at PF if George keeps whining…  In that case, PF isn’t for you PG13, tell them how you feel!

Myles Turner Speaking of my rookie nookie, did some good in his debut (6 boards and 2 blocks) in 15 minutes, but also some bad (0-5 FG 3-6 FT).  Don’t let the FT mislead you, he’s a good freebie shooter.  Seeing two swats already gives me some rankings premature validation.  Also leads to O face.

Ian Mahinmi Well, the Pacers somehow got 16 swats against the Pels, with Mahinmi swatting 4.  I’m still really, really disinterested, but I guess he’s worth a top-200 rank in my next update.  Turner is such a better player.

George Hill Rainbow alert!  Preseason’s first rainbow line.  11/4/3/2/3.  Yes, 3 blocks for Hill.  I guess I REALLY prematurely validated for Turner in this block-fest, I should see a doctor about my sensitivity…

Chris Bosh – In RCLs, he seems to fall crazy low, including my RCL league where I got him outside the top-50.  He looked great Sunday night though, hitting 6-11 FG for 14/7/2 in 23 minutes.  The more he plays in preseason, the more accurately I see him getting drafted around 35ish.

Kyle Lowry Man, he looks tiny out there…  If only the weight he lost could be added to his height!  Looked unreal scoring 26 in 21 minutes, but the Clips played Friday night before this Sunday one and I bet Chris Paul was in coast mode.  Also, all of Lowry’s lost fat means a harder landing when he goes to the floor – doesn’t help his injury risk!

Raul Neto Wooooo, Slim is gonna hear it on today’s Podcast!  2/2/6/4/1 in 20 minutes, and on a team that emphasizes defense and needs facilitating on offense, it just makes so much sense to start him and bring Trey “Sure, I don’t mind shooting it every touch” Burke off the bench.  Something to monitor through the remainder of preseason.

Julius Randle Nice to see him back out there, and a decent 7/7/0/1/1 line in his debut, albeit shooting 2-10.  I just hope Byron Scott didn’t tell the team to break a leg in his pre-game speech.

D’Angelo Russell Still looks raw for 5/3/3/1/0 on 2-8 shooting.  But hey, only 2 TO!  That’s something like 7 less than his Summer League average!

Meyers Leonard Rolled his ankle last night off Boogie’s fat foot.  “Hey, let me land when I take jumpers, you big tree!”  Doesn’t sound too serious, he should be OK.

C.J. McCollum Started and was reportedly rushing, shooting only 2-11.  I’m pretty sure Stotts needs to have the locker room motto read “Pump the brakes, pass it to Lillard”.

Ed DavisSigh…  Comes off the bench, and then does what he does – 5/6/1/1/1 in 19 minutes.  Let him start and play 30 already!

Marco Belinelli Scored 32 last night, but should’ve had a handful more…  12-18 FG (4-10 3PTM), but only 4-8 FT.  If he was still on the Spurs, Pop would’ve benched him for missing FT even in the first preseason game…

Darren Collison First dimebag of the preseason!  24/1/10/4/0, and the backcourt of Colly/Belli looked much better than Rondo/Ben Mac…

Willie Cauley-Stein Out of shape arriving at camp, but had a nice debut last night for 6/5/0/0/1 on 3-5 shooting.  I still think it’ll be a while before he’s a 30 MPG guy.

Draymond Green 5/6/5/1/0 with a trey in his first 24 minutes of preseason.  It’s like nothing changes!  #OccupyDraymondGreen baby!

Nik Stauskas Ruh roh.  Same stress reaction in his leg that has taken chunks of time from Bradley Beal and Jrue Holiday.  The Sauce Castillo needs a little more density!  Hopefully they can mix a little corn starch into his bones…

I hope everyone is enjoying some live NBA action to over-analyze before the season!  Remember to not read too much into the big performances, and just be happy hoops is back!  Happy draft season, Razzball Nation!

RAZZUP BROS?!!! getting a positive negative impact with my 12 13 picks in our league jb. jr smith is now looking good, while mkg done. so far who looks good in preseason and are worth now a look in a 12 team league.

also, where would you now place dragic between the 5 of walker, rjax, ellis and CONLEY and dragic?

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@MAC: Nothing has changed. Dragic and Jackson are still 1A and 1B depending on build. I’ve got the other 3 right next to each other but in a vacuum I’m probably going Conley, Kemba, then Monta.

      • MAC says:

@Slim: even with the heats schedule? u would still have dragic over conley?

@MAC: The difference is 1 game in the 1st round… eh… it isn’t enough for me. I’m not against going Conley over Dragic, I guess it comes down to how worried you are about Conley’s recent injury history, and how important Dragic’s FG% is to your build. The high FG% from a PG/SG carries a fair amount of value to me.

@Michael: I know it was just preseason last night, but Belinelli looked like he could be a solid bench scorer for SAC…It felt like he literally shot the ball every possession.

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Slim: @OldMilwaukeePounders: Hah, yeah he’s as solid a 6th man at SG/SF as they come. Although Collison has to play a little SG too most likely. If he’s hot, he could have 2-3 games like this during the season.

  4. Slim

    Slim says:

Yeah, Neto will be fun to talk about. The man is in dire need of a nickname though. Something along the lines of how he can’t shoot, like at all. You are going to HATE my comp. It is worth noting he still isn’t starting though.

Oh that Utah vs Lakers game. Utah is so nasty on defense. Lakers “shot” 28.9% and had more TOs than assists. If there’s one thing I like about Neto it’s that since he can’t shoot, and Gobert doesn’t shoot it just means more shots for Burks, Hayward, and… Favors! Clarkson looked good. His defense looks improved. Although it looks like he’s playing the 2 and Russell the point. Assists are definitely going to be under 5 per game if this continues.

You left out one of my favorites… Aminu was out and who got the start at SF? Someone I hope to get tomorrow for $1 in the REL. He might actually go undrafted though.

Jokic is another guy I have my eye on for a cheap REL buy. Esp since I have Nurkic. Jokic is a solid player with pretty good upside.

Corey Joseph plays 21 min, doesn’t attempt a 3 and doesn’t get a steal. I know he’s better than that but he’s a tough guy to get excited a-boot.

Dragic looked disinterested in taking any shots. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get a career high in assists but I could also see a decline in scoring. Amar’e looked like he could be a real nice addition for the heat. Him and Gerald Green make the 2nd unit pretty decent. Throw in McBob and it’s pretty obvious that Whiteside isn’t going to get to 30 min.

Bogdanovic looked terrible and RHJ played some solid defense, but I think all of his minutes came at SF. Joe Johnson would have to move to SG for him to start but that probably isn’t happening.

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Slim: One more snippet, during the OKC scrimmage open to the public Steven Adams didn’t practice but they kept Kanter playing with the 2nd unit. That sounds dirty but if you’re thinking of drafting Kanter you should feel dirty. Anyways… it makes so much sense for Kanter to come off the bench and be a scorer with the 2nd unit. I’m not looking to draft Adams but he might be a solid streamer in a 12er and worthy of being rostered in a 16er or so.

      • OldMilwaukeePounders says:
        (link)

@Slim: I’m with you on Crabbe, Slim….I think Aminu was only out because of the birth of his first kid. Crabbe looked good in summer league and again last night.

I like Crabbe too, but it’s fairly low end and likely not starting, bleh… Def worth an REL buy though for sure, I owned him some a while ago too.

Hah yeah my lack of excitement for Cojo resulted in a non-mention haha. Not too exciting, eh?

Interesting with the Thunder… If Adams starts, he plays probably 15 MPG though haha

                (link)

@JB Gilpin: Adams… I’m not so sure about that. He’s all hustle and defense, which Donovan preaches hard and Kanter is not. Plus when Ibaka gets a breather Kanter can get some PF minutes with Adams at C. I think Adams could also be the guy in there to finish out the game since Durant and Westbrook will be taking all the shots anyway. Top of my head, 30 min for Ibaka, 28 Kanter, 26 Adams. That still leaves 12 min for someone else. But Adams needs to start to get those min.

    Hi Guys,
Yesterday, I asked about a possible trade of A.DAVIS (#1 in your rankings, but who’s never played more than 68 games in a season) and Tobias HARRIS (#54) for WALL (#9) and Andre the SNARE (#23). I’m not sure if I understood your response correctly…or whether them cyber tubes that run from the left coast to the right coast were clogged and my question never completely made it…BUT are ya’ll saying that as the AD owner who needs PG help, I should NOT make this trade? Por que? Doesn’t the HARRIS/DRUM part of the trade offset the loss of A.D. while solving a team weakness? I humbly await your sage insights ….. ’cause I’m clearly NOT clear on the concept.
    Thanks.

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Phranque (pronounced Frank): It’s a reasonable offer but I think JBs issue is that it forces you to punt FT%. If you’re already bad at it it’s fine and probably worth doing. If not then I’m with JB, I’m keeping Brow. Tobias is probably worth a decent enough PG by himself. I think I’d look into that.

          (link)

@JB Gilpin: I think Slim and JB are being polite, I don’t think it’s even that close. Without FT punting, which is usually a bad idea, Harris is actually more valuable than Drumm. And the Brow produces circa 2x the output of Wall. You’d be crazy to let him go for such a middling return.

Everyone thinks I rigged my league because I’m commish and I got #1 pick two years in a row…I really have no idea why I’m so lucky. I got #1 in Slim’s league too LOL I just have a random lucky streak going. Viva el Brow!

    • I'm Harden for your love says:
      (link)

      @CTMN:

I have the #1 pick plus the #9 pick in a 10 team keeper league and I am wondering what approach I should take. I’ve listed below all the keepers within the Top 50 and I’ve noticed all those BIGs you would grab in the 2nd round are all taken. One team actually has Gobert and Drummond as the 11th and 12th round keepers YIKES! I have Paul George and Wiggins.

With my 9th pick players like Lillard, Wall, Kawhi, Millsap, Ibaka should be available and with my 20 & 21st picks I’m thinking Hayward, Gay, Oladipo,Favors Bosh, Aldridge Love.. maybe the Gasols and Vucevic are available.

Who would you be targeting knowing my keepers, picks and limited players available? Im torn between a balanced team, punting Ast or punting FG%.

      Westbrook
      Cousins
      K.Thompson
      Draymond
      Gobert
      Butler
      Griffin
      Drummond
      D.Jordan
      Lowry
      Teauge
      Drajic

        (link)

@CTMN: @I’m Harden for your love: Viva el Brow indeed! Hah, man that’s quite a streak!

First pick I would grab Lillard, close between him and Westbrook. Then would likely secure a big as it’s the biggest need with Ibaka. If Wall somehow fell to that 9 pick I would nab him and trade immediately. I almost always lean to a balanced team, although with George, Lillard would make FG% pretty tough…

  8. 12 team h2h 9 cat keeper $200 auction.

I have $183 remaining from trades. Can keep 6 at draft price+$7. My top candidates are listed below at this year’s prices ($7 factored in). Who should I keep, what categories should I draft for and should I punt anything?

    Curry $37
    Millsap $43
    Gobert $8
    Whiteside $7
    Covington $7
    Green $10
    Knight $13
    Vucevic $29

I’m most tempted to keep the top 6 from this list which would leave me with $71 for the remaining 7 players (10 starters, 3 bench).

        JB Gilpin says:

@UltraKzilla: Hah damn, that’d be sick for Dray!

I like Covington this year, but I think I would stick with Knight. Gives you some extra assists as you don’t have a keeper PG2. Although for $7 Covington is a great value… Agree Vuc is out as he doesn’t really fit your already awesome bigs.

        • @JB Gilpin: I love knight, and it killed me to see him leave Milwaukee, I’m unsure about his upside in Phoenix- it seems like he has a much lower ceiling playing off the ball there. Is there much profit potential at the price I’d be paying to keep him versus what I could get from Covington?

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@UltraKzilla: Yeah I wasn’t too happy either as a dynasty owner and loving him there. Yes it’s lower ceiling, but still fits your squad a little better, I don’t think you’ll miss that $6 by adding 3-4 consistent dimes and a little better overall player

  9. CTMN says:
    (link)

For the Bosh comment, I had the same thing happen. He fell all the way to my pick at 48 in Slim’s RCL, which I was really surprised about. Happy to get him there.
When I watched the Nuggets game from Friday, I didn’t realize who Lauvergne was for a while. But he was actually really solid, so maybe he’ll find himself a role.
Lowry was fantastic Sunday. He’s been going at Chris Paul in their last few meetings – he outplayed him twice last year in 2 wins for the Raptors. That lost weight is definitely gonna help him and he looked really fast. I actually think it could help prevent injury, since less weight can fall on his ankles (no, seriously).
What’s with Collison going off like that?!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@CTMN: Yeah it’s odd he’s being so avoided, and looks good. Lauvergne has shown flashes in some brief NBA play, but needs consistency.

Hahahaha, yeah my comment on Lowry was a joke, all things equal lost weight usually helps prevent injuries.

Proves Collison is a better fantasy pick than Rondo as we have them! He’s so underrated…

I might have a very different team come March. The importance of a healthy team in this league can not be understated. I was telling JB the other day that I think this league can be won by a team without a single top 100 player. Health and quality depth are the keys to winning.

found another keeper league! AAAH!! i love inheriting bad keeper teams! it reminds me of the last 10 years of timberwolves basketball. AND this one has a rookie draft, so i’m extra excited to sneakily grab myles turner.

    obvious keepers:
    Chris Paul (LAC – PG)$ 68
    DeMarcus Cousins (Sac – PF,C)$ 39
    Aaron Gordon (Orl – PF) $ 5
    Giannis Antetokounmpo (Mil – SF,PF) $ 7
    Khris Middleton (Mil – SG,SF)$ 5

    questionable
    Markieff Morris (Pho – PF,C)$ 7
    Trevor Ariza (Hou – SG,SF)$ 22

    cutting bait so fast:
    Rajon Rondo (Sac – PG)$ 23
    Roy Hibbert (LAL – C) $ 15
    Mason Plumlee (Por – PF,C)$ 7
    Andre Iguodala (GS – SG,SF)$ 6
    Patrick Patterson (Tor – PF,C)$ 5
    Marcus Morris (Det – SF,PF)$ 5
    Devin Harris (Dal – PG,SG)$ 5
    Tristan Thompson (Cle – PF,C)$ 5
    Corey Brewer (Hou – SG,SF)$ 4

    12 team 9 cat h2h

Basically, it’s a full rebuild – but given two top 10 players in CP3 and Boogie, i figure it shouldn’t be too hard to build around. That said, I’ve never built around Boogie before, so anyone have advice? Boogie + CP3 is an extremely solid foundation in fg%, points, and steals, but after that things get murky.

i love that the previous owner had both Morri haha.

    • Magones says:

@kai: And points and assists and pretty good FT%. It’s a great core surely!

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@kai: @Magones: Nice! Only one that is kinda interesting is Patterson at $5, but it’s very meh. Oh wait, now you gotta keep Kieff at $7! Seems like a very solid value there.

Well at least next to Boogie, you have high assist output with small TO. Then add another low TO-PG or two then you’re solid, i.e. Clarkson or Conley or Teague as kinda a spectrum.

I think FT% is just OK, Gianinis isn’t great, Gordon either, and the good ones aren’t huge volume. I’d try to get the boring low-TO, decent FT% bigs ala Valanciunas.

@JB Gilpin: what do you think about Demar Derozan as a late-mid ft% bolster?

          • Slim

            Slim says:
            (link)

@kai: The biggest question I have is can you handle his FG% drain and it looks like you can. Then it becomes can you handle low 3s from a wing and that looks to be a little more of an issue, but easily fixable.

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

              @kai: @Slim: Yeah I think he’d be a solid fit, I’m with Slim

            • kai says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: @Slim: cool, thanks for the advice. i’m gonna try streaming 3s in this league for the first time, so should be pretty fun! why isn’t the preseason over yet???

also, for rookie draft I have the fifth pick. here’s how i’d rank them

              1. KAT
              2. Turner
              3. Mudiay
              4. D’Angelo
              5. Johnson

that sound right? i don’t think anyone will pick Turner (hoping Okafor is nabbed first), but in the event 1-4 are gone, do you all have Johnson 5 as well?

              • JB Gilpin

                JB Gilpin says:
                (link)

@kai: Hah yeah we got 3 weeks of preseason left! Streaming 3s is pretty plentiful on the wire! It’ll be fun.

Yup looks good to me! that’s how I have them ranked this year, minus Turner first, but in a keeper, KAT moves well above

More general leaguey question – how do you get in on the REL league / where do people find good keeper leagues and inherit teams? Sounds great but I wouldn’t know where to look.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Magones: Well the REL is full now, it’s just something I launched a few years ago and filled out with readers and some of the new writers. As for new leagues, you could post on the RCL sign up seeing if people are interested or on Yahoo or ESPN forums…

I currently have wall and am slightly concerned as to how he will do this season. I’m looking to trade him but who should I target that could be more reliable whole returning a decent amount of assists? I have harden, wall, gobert, bosh, gay, favors, Thomas, rjax, Gallo, myles, McCollum, Wes Matthews, Wiggins and dieng

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jason: What is your concern? Only issue I see is maybe you’re worried about TO? I think he’ll be fine, I’d certainly command a lot back for him

      • Jason says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: slightly concerned as he struggled a bit in the second half last season and has struggled a bit in the preseason. Should I try trading him for a guy like Westbrook? On a side note, do you think I should try trading bosh for vucevic?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Jason: Nah don’t worry about preseason. And I don’t see anything worrisome in his 2nd half numbers, sure TO went up a tad and FG% went down, but scoring went up a smidge and was great at the stripe…

But yeah I’d be fine getting someone top end like Westbrook, I like Westbrook slightly more. Sure, yeah I like Vuc more

@andy: I have Asik and Olynyk ranked higher, I like Asik since he plays the first night and you can address from there. If a need for guard stats I might gamble on Lin

        • andy says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: considering ajinca is gone, asik looks like the best option, yes. thanks man

@andy: Yup, Asik was gonna play probably 25ish minutes anyway, now looks like 30ish. Any time!
