The Washington Post recently ran an interesting article about NBA players who can’t hit free throws. Not being able to make a free throw is possibly the most embarrassing thing a basketball player can fail out, equivalent to a baseball player who can’t throw (note to John Wall). Unlike in baseball, however, the free throw blunder affects many players every game for the entire season. When we look at players who, for the season, are averaging greater than 15 minutes and 1 free throw attempt per game, Andre Drummond is the worst of the bunch. Over the season, he has attempted 2+ throws and been successful at a clip of .406, which is Ben Wallace-esque in its awfulness. Here is a list of other players who hit less than 60% of their shots from the free throw line:
2. DeAndre Jordan – 25 MPG, .417 FT%, 3 FTA
3. Maurice Harkless – 18 MPG, .435 FT%, 1 FTA
4. Ronnie Brewer – 20 MPG, .441 FT%, 1 FTA
5. Brendan Haywood – 22 MPG, .462 FT%, 1 FTA
6. Bismack Biyombo – 26 MPG, .500 FT%, 2 FTA
7. Dwight Howard – 36 MPG, .513 FT%, 10 FTA
8. Josh Smith – 35 MPG, .519 FT%, 4 FTA
9. James Johnson – 18 MPG, .529 FT%, 1 FTA
10. JaVale McGee – 19 MPG, .560 FT%, 3 FTA
Honorable mentions: Omer Asik (31 MPG, .571 FT%, 4 FTA), Al Horford (37 MPG, .586 FT%, 3 FTA), Thaddeus Young (36 MPG, .591 FT%, 3 FTA)
Happy New Year to all of you at there on planet Earth. Regular recaps will resume tomorrow, January 2, 2013.
