I like Christmas, always have. It’s one of the few events from childhood that have carried over into my semblance of adulthood. Which of course is an approximation, but I digress. The simple concept of: “Be good all year, and you’ll get rewarded” seems to be so perfect. In actuality, we all know that this is elusive, at best, but I’m here to tell you, if you close your eyes and believe with all your might, you may just get a fantasy miracle! Basketball. Fantasy basketball miracle, not that smut you’ve been focusing on, I’m here to give advice on basketball, not how to introduce immorality into the boudoir! And since it is almost Baby Jesus’ B-day, I’ll be brief this go-round:

BUY:

Rajon Rondo PG

Full disclosure: Slim and JB are opposed to my stance on Rajon, they think that the move to Dallas will hurt his fantasy value, which you would already know if you listen to the Razzball Podcast. I disagree, with absolutely nothing other than my substantial gut to back me up on this. Rondo will turn the ball over a fair amount in the short term, IMO, but he has 3 legit scorers who can all play on the perimeter to open up lanes for him, and cash in his dimes. Scoring will be a bit less, and percentages aren’t great, but if his fantasy owner is upset about the trade, I would make an offer. And a happy neeewwww yyyyearrrr!

James Johnson SF, PF

Christmas goers, James is 9% owned. He just got the start, as Landry Fields is injured. And oh yeah, he did this, dunking a murderous slamma jamma over Andre Drummondthen followed it up with the illest post game quote of the year, saying: “That was nasty, right? I just cocked that joint back and banged on him.” Beyond my obvious man crush on the dude, he went 12.6/5.3/1.6/1.3/1.6 with only 1 turnover per the last 3, shooting an amazing percentage in the .600s, (my math skills suck eggnog). It’s a festivus miracle, so go out and capitalize, son!

Dennis Schroder PG

Schroder is the NBA equivalent to getting a Starbucks gift card from your secret santa at work. He is a streamer when Jeff Teague is out, but he returned last night off the bench.  Dennis has used the time nicely, going 15/4.5/6/.5/0 over the last two. And who doesn’t like a pumpkin spice latte once in a while?

Rudy Gobert C

Rudy should be on your wire, he’s only 26% owned, and if you need some boards and blocks, Rudy is your christmas elf! He’s averaged 13 boards and 2 blocks over his last 2 games, so give us some figgy pudding! Sorry.

SELL:

Greg Monroe PF, C

I’m hoping for ol’ Saint Nick to help us out on this one. I have stashed this dude, riding his woeful performances out, and to his credit, he has been playing better of late. The recent exit of Josh Smith should free up the starting spot, and hopefully increase minutes, touches, etc. Which is why you should try to move him now, as I don’t think it will amount to much more than what he currently gives you, it’s a sell high point, IMO.

Brandon Wright PF, C

I don’t like the move to the Celtics for Wright’s fantasy value, as the front court is crowded with Kelly Olynyk, Jared Sullinger, Tyler Zeller, Brandon Bass, and even Jeff Green playing the power forward spot on occasion. What Wright does possess is the second best shooting percentage in the league, and a gifted pimp-esque swatting hand, so maybe you can parlay those traits into something more suitable. He’s a re-gift, to keep the Christmas theme going!

That’s all I have for this week. I know that the following is self indulgent, but last week I lost one of my best childhood friends to complications due to ALS. Matthew was the only dude I’ve ever seen routinely pull off 360 lay ups during real games, he had a shot as ugly as Shawn Marion‘s, and he was one of the most courageous men I’ll ever know. I’ll miss you, homeboy.

May all your shots be nothing but net, and enjoy your non-denominational holiday celebration everyone!

if i don’t have space to hold schroder (i.e. i need all the help i can get atm), I should drop as teague will draw the starts soon anyways right?

    merry christmas!!

@KD Owner: oh right, just re-read. i’ll move on but keep him in my streamer rolodex

@KD Owner: Sorry for the delay, but holidays…
Teague is already back, off the bench. Dennis is only worth keeping speculatively in 12-14 teamers. And that’s if you can ride a guy who may not produce consistently.
      Happy holidays!

Hey Dan! Love the site, follow you religiously.
I’m in a 10 man points league. Nabbed Rubio a few week ago, is his value decent in points or only category?

    Cheers mate.

@AussieBattler: if you’re in a “points” as in scoring only, no. But those are obscure, so I assume you’re in a points/boards/dimes/steals/blocks etc league. His value, which is worthwhile all around, depends on the value dimes have, vs turnovers, for example. I’m babbling. I like him a lot, they paid him a ton, so you know he’ll get burn when he shakes the rust off. Had a few glasses of Christmas cheer, I hope that made sense. 🙂

@miles proudfoot.: thanks dood. I appreciate you indulging me, this isn’t exactly the forum, but he loved basketball, pretended to enjoy my smelly little offerings here, and the past week has been my first experience of loss of a close, young friend (he was 38), and has been life altering. I won’t go on, but you have been a regular contributer, so I appreciate you reaching out through the interweb, decent of you.

All I want for Christmas is no more trades. I feel like I have been hurt badly by both trades with nearly every worst case scenario coming to fruition. It is time to get proactive and try to get out in front of the next one. It is hard to predict things of this nature but Rondo and Josh Smith move were a long time in the making. No surprises there. Perhaps this is the year every trade we have been waiting for happens.

Yo man, do I have a drop for Gobert or Len?
Gobert got dropped and I think I wanna stash him if he clears waivers.

    G – cp3, rubio, holiday, mcdaniels
    F – kawhi, hayward, draymond, sully, d.lee
    C – horford, brolo, j.hill, oquinn

I was thinking sully or j hill are my most droppable players? I cant drop mcdaniels for gobert cause I will have too many PF/Cs that would ruin my positional flexibility when setting up lineups.
Should i stand pat or make a move? Who will be my first drop when a hot FA pops up

curious who people have as deep sleepers right now. All the ones I had at beginning of the year seem to be panning out with on their playing time stopping them from full breakout. Dreymond Green, Kelly Olynyk, Mason Plumlee and Kyle O’quinn. Not all that far away from midpoint of the season and I am curious who people have as deep sleepers for second half of the year? Ed Davis perhaps ? Jarrett Jack post D. Williams trade? I have to take a good look at second string squads to really contribute to this question myself.

    • ADadhd says:
      (link)

@ADadhd: Ok, Jonas Jerebko, I think it may take an injury or a trade to get him the minutes but he is on my deep sleeper watch list.

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@ADadhd: I am a huge Ed Davis fan, I’ve written him up here twice already, if he’s available, nab him for sure! Jonas Jerebko is interesting, but I think he has a ceiling, even if he gets minutes, not much than later mid round value. Jack always seems to start wherever he ends up at some point, but while he’s decent, it’s more a testiment to where he’s played, so again, limited ceiling. I’ll also take a look at potential guys (gobert?) to see if any others jump out. With so many rooks out, it’s harder to mine potential sleepers.

    Happy holidays!

So what’s the prognosis on Marcus smart. I can be patient, I like having at least one spot on the roster for someone with upside. But I am considering between him Ed Davis, and Alex len. Who’s the winner here? I could use either more ast or reb/blks so either one is a Win as long as they have value! Thank you 🙂

    • @Bren:

For fantasy, I really love investing in players with incredible upside and that is what Marcus Smart offers. Rookie of the Year is still pretty much up for grabs, so I think the 2nd half the season is when the class of 2014 really kicks it up a notch. You can’t argue with Jameer Nelson as his backup (and the strong showing last game by him is a good buy-low moment for Smart). He is a great rebounder and finisher around the rim. He loves the 3 point shot and I can almost guarantee Smart will become a league leader in steals as he has some of the best hands I’ve seen.

I have Smart on my team and I’m holding out as well.

On a side note, I dropped Trey Burke for Tyler Zeller. I’ve been watching him play and he finishes just as well as someone like Tyson Chandler. He is a rock in the middle and the Celtics really don’t have another option at Center since Sullinger and Olynyk are more PF than true centers. The dynamic of the Celtics has changed drastically since Rondo’s departure and I would keep a close eye on Boston.

      Just my .02 cents

      • Dan A

        Dan A. says:
        (link)

@Jeffrey Ito: You’re on point with Marcus, but Jameer is a very capable starter, I hope the competition is good for Marcus.
Zeller is a great potential stash, but he’s really skinny, which makes him matchup dependant. Against bigger centers, he will have limited minutes (Howard, Valanciunas, Pekovic, Drummond, Jefferson, etc)
And now that there is Wright, Olynyk as well as Zeller, things could change. But I like your insights, just adding to them!

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Bren: I like the stage that has been set in Boston: with the Rondo trade, it should mean Smart is the cat for the future, and he will get good minutes. They will be cautious as well, as he’s already been injured, and they have nothing to play for other than development, so temper your expectations this year. Jameer is capable as well.
I like Ed Davis a lot, and have been touting him for a while. boards/blocks are his contribution, and hopefully he will get closer to 25-30 min consistently soon.
Between the 2? I guess I go with Ed, as he will have far fewer turnovers, IMO.

would you trade a cheap wiggins (keeper league, could be a big keeper someday) to a 1-7 team for either: melo/serge/dragic/jrue/pau?

what order would you target these guys in, lets just say i’m not targeting any category specifically, just trying to get an impact player? may have to give up more than just wiggins for either melo or serge, but you get the idea

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@merryxmans: Hmm. If you’re moving Wiggins, I woul drate your target gets as:
      Serge, Melo, Jrue, Pau, Dragic
Melo will likely be shut down for the year soon, so consider that. Dragic may return to his former form, but right now his value is low.

  11. AussieBattler says:

Hey Dan, yeah I’m in a points league as opposed to a category. These are my tradables: Afflalo +Sullinger. These are on the waivers that I’m keeping an eye on: Zeller, O’Quinn, Corey Brewer, Hibbert. Thoughts?

Wutup My Main Man Danny Boy!! I hope you had a Merry Christmas!!! So I started off in last place, in my H2H 9 CAT league, the first 5 or 6 weeks cause of major injuries, including Westbrook, but I’m slowly coming back. ( Knock on Wood).. Anyway I have besides 1 sgsf,(Alphabet) 8 guards, Westbrook, Ellis, Dragic, Collison, Lou Williams, Tim Hardaway Jr and Mo Williams but 6 of them are sg’s too and I have 5 Pf/C’s which are Millsap, Ibaka, Favors, Stoudemire and Dieng but all of them play PF most of the time so I guess it kinda makes up for the lack of the Sg/Sf & Sf/Pf positions. My team has been solid except for boards but do you think I need to cut back on guards or am I ok?? If so then who would you drop?? I can grab James Johnson, Bogut, Mirotic, Wesley Johnson or maybe Tony Allen.. I’ve been only grabbing guys with good percentages too to keep them up. Thanks!!!

@Frank White: Frankie! Forgive the late reply, I was away for the holidays. I hope you and yours had a wonderful christmas! Your squad looks good, but I know you like to make moves and be proactive. If you aren’t leaving guys who have games that night on the bench due to no eligibility, don’t make any moves that don’t benefit you. Now that Dragic has been playing a bit better, you might get a decent trade there. I like james Johnson a lot, and he has SF eligibility. Mo Williams would likely be my drop. keep me posted on your progress!

      (link)

@Bye Felicia: I’m stating the obvious here, but you stuck it out this long, don’t sell low if Harden is off the table! Just my opinion, but I’d rather fall out of contention than trade a potential top 3 overall fantasy chip for a top 40 guy, and watch him destroy in the second half of the season into the playoffs. KD should be right as rain for the playoffs, (fingers crossed!!) you only need to make it in. Harden is a blue chip guy, but don’t take a B+ guy. Just sayin, doing my best to talk you off the ledge.
