Being a Sixers fan the past 5 years has been a swift kick to the nards.  And with such unabashed tanking, they’ve only gotten the 3rd pick in the lotto the past two seasons, but NO MORE!  Those kicked-in nards are falling dropping with the fortune of winning the lottery, which hopefully in this case goes better than the winner in Shirley Jackson’s world

If you missed the balls dropping last night, the Philadelphia 76ers “won the lottery” by getting the first pick.  They had the most balls as well, something rarely said about the Sixers franchise lately.  We get the metaphor already!  Watch Philly screw it up too…  Looking at their 1st-round picks the past few years, their best one was probably Nikola Vucevic…  That didn’t end up working out well for Philly!  So I expect them to pass on Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram and go, I dunno, the last of the Plumlee clan so they can have Duke twin towers…  Big man is a need for them right?!  RIGHT?!

Being an ACC fan, I personally think Ingram is a smidge overrated, just insofar as being lumped with Simmons.  Bill Simmons’ son is the class of the draft for me, and while both are SF-types, Simmons just seems to fit the Sixers so well.  They still are in flux at PG, so Simmons’ passing ability could make him a pretty nasty multi-cat threat on offense.  On top of 4.8 dimes averaged at LSU, he also averaged 2.0 STL and 0.8 BLK, so there could be D stats as well.  He also isn’t much of a perimeter shooter, which would actually play really nice next to Robert Covington, who might finally have that full-season breakout we’ve all been hoping for.

Rounding out the top 3, the Lakers get the 2nd pick and Boston and their trade-rape of Brooklyn a few years ago get the horribly-run Nets’ pick and go 3rd.  The lottery actually went in the exact order it was supposed to.  Yet somehow, the Mega Millions and Powerball lotteries never go they way they’re supposed to, by giving me millions of dollars!  What’s that about?!

On top of the Celtics having a ton of picks, the Nuggets also have 3 first rounders at 7, 15 and 19.  I knew they were in a rebuild and I think knew about their picks in passing, but seeing it finally on paper is pretty interesting.  Here’s to hoping they don’t draft big men and muck up our Jusuf Nurkic and Nikola Jokic love!

We’ll be talking the draft extensively over the next month and 5 days, and Slim and I have already started our back-and-forth mock draft.  You can check out how we did in 2014 and 2015, or maybe I shouldn’t have linked those as they go a little buckwild!  Mmmm, Aaron Gordon on the Hornets though!  That would be such an amazing fit!  Zach Lavine to the Jazz – he’d be forced to play starting PG!  And if Kristaps Porzingis was on the Pistons…  Actually, I think that would be just as good a spot as being the Poison Goose on the Knicks!  Man, those were fun to peruse through…

Anyway, here’s how the NBA’s First Round will go down, and we’ll be putting up our mock draft sometime next week!

Here’s a question for ya: Will my Bulls ever be relevant again, and who do you see being relevant again? And who do you think is the best fit at 14 for them?

Yo, good to see your new name on hoops! Hah.

I think a team that looks like they should be in the playoffs again will always be “relevant”. Especially if they keep Buckets, which it looks like they will.

I kinda like Tyler Ulis for them. More a jump shooter than slasher, he could play next to Buckets really well if they move Rose, plus they could just keep Rose to mentor then trade at the deadline, or just have Ulis as the backup this year then hope he can prove to be a starter in 17-18

@JB Gilpin: I like that plan, I keep seeing us being mocked with a SF/SG which I dont see as as big of a need as say a PG or PF/C that can run the floor. It’s debatable if Noah returns, pretty sure Pau will not, and Rose has lost his bloom, most likely forever, after all the knee issues. I still miss Thibs but I’m trying to like our new coach and give him the benefit of the doubt. He certainly had a lot of round pegs for square holes with the type of Offense he wants to run.

@We’re Out Of Room: Unless they trade Butler, yeah I dunno why they’d wanna go wing… Unless they think Mirotic in no way shape or form can play SF minutes.

Yeah Hoiberg got dealt an unlukcy hand with all the injuries too… Maybe can blame Thibs for that ha!

            (link)

@JB Gilpin: Ha, maybe. But Thibs didnt take any shit, he may have ran his guys hard but he’s gonna do well in his new gig with all that young talent imo. Im still not sold on Hoiberg, i wanna like him but Im just not there yet…I need results lol.

@We’re Out Of Room: Yeah I think Bulls getting hurt was a Thibs skapegoat. NBA players should be able to play 40 minutes a night. Hah yeah missing the playoffs was no bueno, but I def thinks he gets a full 16-17 to see what he can do

Don’t get me wrong, I wanted the C’s to go #1, but I would’ve been content if anyone but those two teams got the first two picks. It would’ve been poetic justice for them seeing as they unabashedly tanked away their entire seasons. The lottery is supposed to discourage this behavior dammit!

Most mocks have Boston selecting Dragan Bender. I don’t know too much about him or the international draft class tbh, but everything I read makes him seem very.. raw. What are your thoughts JB?

We need outside shooters and a rim protector who can run the floor in order to make it to the next level. Perhaps some of those holes can be filled later in the draft or through FA, but is there is a better pick for us at 3?

    • JB Gilpin

@Ryan: Well, at least the Lakers didn’t like trade Kobe at the deadline for picks to fully tank haha. Although no one woulda taken him… But agree, it woulda been HILARIOUS had the Sixers gotten like the 7th pick or something ha.

Yeah I’ve seen Dragan as the main guy too. C’s are so good though, they can go raw upside. I think Jaylen Brown is the only other one to consider there. So yeah, prob not.

If Brice Johnson falls to 23 or you reach for him at 16, there’s your rim protector who can run the floor!

Ohh I wasn’t much a fan when UNC beat my beloved Friars, but I like Brice a lot. Been following the combine and didn’t see any mentions of him. Which surprises me since I thought he would’ve raised his stock for sure at the combine with that freakish athleticism.

Speaking of freak athletes, did you see Jared Blossomgame or Kay Felder at the combine? They caught my eye big time during the 5 on 5’s, and then again when I saw how they measured and tested.

Blossomgame came out as a big favorite for me. He’s a great athlete with good size for a wing, and it looks like he’s developing into very good 3pt shooter (44% last year at Clemson!). Brice would be a good PF/C in small ball lineups, but a rotational wing that can shoot the ball is the best fit for the Celtics IMO. I’d be ecstatic if we can steal Brice at 23, and nab Blossomgame at 31. I’m hoping their stocks don’t rise too much.

@Ryan: Oh yeah, you’re the Providence guy! Still think Dunn seems a little overrated :/ But that’s based on the UNC game and I think one other I saw ha.

Hmmm, I hadn’t really been following combine results… Interesting, he is a great spot shooter. Ya never really know how those guys will translate though.

Agree, those would be some crazy good ACC picks for your Celtics there!

@JB Gilpin: Vogel the new ORL coach – yay? He’s a great real life coach but what you thinking for fantasy purposes? Ideally, I’d want Oladipo to be featured as the Paul George of this team, getting as much run as he wants. Vuc should prob hover around the same level of production as last season, maybe with a couple more mins under his belt. I REALLY hope he unleashes Gordon and Payton, as far as allowing them to hit the 30-35min per gam mark. I wasn’t all that excited about what monta and Hill did in IND last year so it has me a little concerned as to what Vogel will be doing for fantasy purposes in ORL. Everyone keeps talking about Hezonja perhaps getting an increase in value but I dont even think of the guy because Fournier and Dipo are still very much the starters. A little confused here..

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Lasandro: Hah, yeah yay question mark is about right. I do think I like it though, especially for Oladipo. Interesting on the guards comp though, although Monta and Hill being bleh I think had to do more with PG13’s massive usage than any sort of guard rotation.

Agree, I’ve been on the Hezonja overrated bangwagon since he was drafted. Only way I see it happening is if Dipo starts at the 1, Fournier 2/3 Hezonja 2/3 and they play a big PG with 2 big wings

@Bye Felica: Hah yeah it’s def not the best! I think a few hidden gems will emerge though. Slim and I are on the last 2 picks of our mock!

Damn, who can we have at #4?? Oh well, it does not matter anyway bcoz the suns are still going to suck! Lol. Overpaid two guards who can’t stay healthy, did the same with a center who is in the tailend of his career. Hired an unproven coach and didn’t even try to interview the Vogels and Joergers, I mean I know for a fact that these coaches won’t even entertain the idea of getting involved with an organization like the Suns, but damn, the suns could’ve at least tried. And now we have the 4th fucking overall pick, well Porzingis was a 4th pick. Lol. Anyway, I hope they get rid of either Bledsoe or Knight, coz Booker needs to start and play heavy minutes! 38 or 48 mins I don’t care! The kid proved last season that he deserves that SG spot! Seriously, if the Suns fucks him up I’m gonna try my best to root for another team! Suns are searching for another player to love and cheer for (since Nash left), and we may have found that in Booker!

@Dante Green: Hah, well I’ve seen a few mocks go Jaylen Brown and we have that in our mock as well – spoiler alert! Brown can play the 3 next to those guys – I would guess off the bench at first, but we’ll see. Seems a nice fit.

Haha sorry about your Suns man, greener pastures ahead!
