As the race to the top of the RCL Master Standings is in full force, it is important to remember the fantasy fundamentals for the rest of us trying to catch up. With many teams experimenting with new lineup combinations, the next popular waiver wire addition can emerge at any time. For everyone looking to climb up the standings and catch the league’s elite, it begins with amassing a solid bench and collection of valuable contributors. Fantasy champions aren’t built overnight (unless you had a really good draft, in which case, congratulations!), so weeks 7-13 are just as important as weeks 1-6 in changing the trajectory of your team.

In an NBA landscape characterized by Steph Curry’s wizardry and Golden State’s record-breaking start, casual fans have missed one of the most interesting subplots from the first quarter of season: the East’s ascension to respectability. With a winning record against the Western Conference (60-58) and ten teams over .500, 2015 has marked a rebirth for the historically lesser conference, now sporting more top-to-bottom depth than in recent memory.

While it’s easy to say, “welcome to the party, we’ve been waiting for you for at least the past decade,” restoration of competitive balance in the East finally appears to be a tangible goal. With two of this season’s biggest surprises in the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets squaring off to open yesterday’s nine-game slate, last night’s contest may have actually been the first iteration of competitive basketball for this particular matchup since the mid-2000s.

With the Hornets emerging as the victors, it begs the question: are they actually good?? For a team with disillusioned hopes of postseason basketball heading into the season, their early successes may still spark skepticism after each passing victory. But with a +3.6 point differential and the fifth placed ranking in the standings this year, the Hornets actually appear to be a legitimately solid basketball team.

One of the main catalysts behind the turnaround, Nic Batum has played excellently on the wing as a secondary ball handler and defensive stopper. For fantasy owners who did not abandon the Batum bandwagon after a disappointing 2014-2015, the Frenchman has more than delivered this season, elevating his status to one of the primer fantasy wing options. Batum continued to produce last night with a near triple double of 13 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds in addition to a steal and a block. Vive la France!

After closing the first month of the NBA season, the RCL fantasy basketball contenders are starting to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Excellent drafting, shrewd waiver wire pickups, and attention to setting the daily lineup have characterized the beginning of the year for the league’s top tier while the rest of us are trying to play catch up. With the first quarter of the fantasy regular season in the books, it’s time to reevaluate rosters and expectations for the remainder of the year.

After a tough loss in Detroit, it’s safe to say things have yet to take flight for this year’s Houston Rockets. While many came into the season thinking Houston’s out-of-this-world lineup had the potential to challenge the incumbent Golden State Warriors for the title as best team in the West, those dreams came crashing back to earth weeks ago (and Kevin McHale is still searching through the wreckage for the cause of the incident). Last night’s struggles are just another indication of this season’s overall trend: the Houston Rockets are looking more like Team Rocket when they step on the court.

Even a near triple double from James Harden (29 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists) wasn’t enough for Houston to surmount a surprising Pistons squad. With Harden passing 40 minutes for the fourth straight game, it’s looking like the Rockets are going to be riding their thoroughbred until the saddle cracks. In fairness, a monster game from Harden is probably the best chance Houston has to win every night, but for fantasy owners, the team’s struggle bodes well for the Beard’s outlook. Harden is going to score in abundance while racking up rebounds, assists, 3s, and steals as Houston fights to stay in the playoff hunt early. I think these past five games are particularly telling for the current state of the team as well as Harden’s prospects for the next few weeks as they try to right the ship (or the rocket).

As the holiday season quickly approaches, it’s important to make time for family and to give thanks for all the blessings in our lives. In between the turkey and tradition, Thanksgiving doubles as one of the most significant sporting days in the nation. With professional football on the holiday dating back to 1920, it’s easy to get lost in the hype surrounding your pigskin potlucks.

While many fantasy football owners are focusing their energies on a potential playoff push, fantasy basketball owners need to continue to do the little things like setting your lineup and checking the waiver wire.

For the dedicated players, their weekly conquests are as certain as death and taxes or the 76ers and losing. As we spend the day traveling back to our families and loved ones, let’s glorify the Razzball fantasy stars of the previous week.

After a wild week of NBA action featuring a few injuries to some of fantasy’s top performers, owners are quickly trying to adjust to their league’s new equilibrium. As a Kevin Durant owner, I can personally attest to the struggle of making up for lost production while trying to stay competitive in a weekly matchup.

Despite all the planning, research, and strategy an owner can put into his team, fantasy ultimately comes down to luck, and the injury bug seemed to be biting in full force last week.

While some teams succumbed to rotten luck in week 3, the strongest teams managed to persevere to claim the top spots in the standings.

After witnessing the Philadelphia lose their eleventh straight contest this year, needless to say, it certainly takes balls to be a 76ers fan right now. I’m not referring to testicular fortitude or alpha masculinity, but rather literally, to the ping pong balls of hope known as the 2016 NBA Draft Lottery. With the possibility of multiple lottery picks in the 2016 Draft, it’s going to be okay Philadelphia fans. Put down your weapons, we’ll get through this together.

But it may take some time, since the franchise is focusing on future contention; the on-court product suffers as the 76ers appear to be the worst team in basketball once again.

At this point, I’m just surprised Philadelphia still has a team website, since they can’t string three “W’s” together…

I think I’m going to hide in a corner for the rest of my life after that joke.

Philly, I’m rooting for you, and I’m rooting for the process!

Jahil Okafor continued to impact the box score with a 19 points, 11 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. The Rookie of the Year frontrunner recorded his second straight double double against a soft Dallas front court. Luckily for fantasy owners, Okafor will see plenty of minutes to develop in the interim despite concerns about his immediate impact to the team’s chances of winning. Long term, his inabilities to defend the rim and stretch the floor may impact his fit in Philadelphia. I don’t think the coaching staff has any surprising moves in store for 2015 (such as playing more small ball around Noel or limiting Okafor’s minutes experimenting with more perimeter-based lineups), but moving forward, it is a trend to monitor as he continues to develop this year.

After a thrilling second week of NBA basketball, fantasy owners now have a greater understanding of their place in the league’s hierarchy. Whether you’re an owner looking to make a major overhaul to stay competitive or simply calibrating your daily lineups with fringe moves, week 2 illuminated the strengths of the contenders and alerted the cellar dwellers of their weaknesses.

While there is plenty of basketball left to be played, the fantasy landscape is officially beginning to take shape across all the RCL leagues. With a shakeup in the top of the overall standings, everything is still in flux as the best teams attempt to separate themselves from the pack.

On the heels of one of the more graphic injuries in recent memory, Indiana Pacer forward Paul George began the 2015 NBA season surrounded by questions regarding his ability to reclaim his All-Pro status. Leading all scorers with 27 points in the Pacers win against the Magic, George is silencing any remaining critics as he recorded his fourth-straight 20 point outing. Starting at the 4 yesterday, George logged 7 assists, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal while going 3-6 from beyond the arc. Despite the preseason outcry surrounding his shift from a starting wing to a small-ball power forward, the Fresno State product is playing like a superstar once again. His re-ascension has been a blessing for fantasy owners as George continues to play like a true superstar. The only real knock on his fantasy value is his high rate of turnovers, as he set a season-high of 6 last night. While there are no points for generic and cliche nicknames, fantasy fans should cherish George’s willingness to be called “PG-13,” since it made it a whole helluva lot easy to name the article.

But before we break pace and starting making too many overdone jokes, here’s what else went down yesterday in fantasy hoops action:

Popularized by Green Bay Packer legend Vince Lombardi, the mantra “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing” has characterized the competitive athletic landscape for as long as I can remember. As an extension of real sports, the philosophy applies to fantasy basketball as well, where egos and intellects clash in daily combative matchups.

Not mentioned in this statement is the notion that winning in fantasy basketball also involves setting your lineup every day. While I may have forgotten to set my lineup on more than one occasion (in addition to forgetting about the waiver wire period as I tried to reclaim Harrison Barnes after accidentally dropping him), all the top teams in the RCL basketball league’s have one thing in common: they didn’t do either of those things! Congrats on being more functional humans than me!

While I can easily blame my incredibly busy social life for these fantasy lapses in judgement (I swear I have friends. Fine, I don’t believe me either), week 1 is an interesting pivot point for fantasy owners as the most least successful teams look for a clean slate to either reaffirm or redeem their previous performance.

As the season slowly unfolds, the first week tests the attentiveness and preparation of fantasy owners with the strongest rising to the top of the rankings.

That being said, you can check out how your teams stacked up in week 1 in the 2015-16 RCL Master Standings Table table.  Here’s how the action went down in the first regular season week across our 22 RCL Leagues:

After making history this weekend with arguably the best Halloween costume from an NBA player of all time, LeBron James made his way into the NBA record books becoming the youngest player to score 25,000 career points. Despite the record-breaking basket coming against the hapless Philadelphia 76ers, the feat nonetheless is one of the most impressive in recent memory. With all the scrutiny surrounding the potential decline of the Artist Formerly Known as King James, tonight’s performance was an instant reminder of how effectively he can impact the game not only on the hardwood, but the fantasy box score as well.

Registering 22 points, 11 assists, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks on 9-19 shooting, James had his most well-rounded performance of the season. Moving forward, James should begin to impact other areas of the box score (assists, rebounds, steals, and FG percentage) as the Cavs offense clicks.

As the Cavs begin to realize the full potential of their All-Pro floor spacer in Kevin Love, James ability to facilitate and control the pace of the game will open up his true fantasy potential. Pencil him in for at least 20 points, 8 boards, and 6 assists on .500+ shooting. All hail the King.

With the ever-growing influence of the three point shot in the NBA’s pace-and-space landscape, wing players without a reliable jumper are now ostracized more than ever. Even in the league’s most talent-starved position, a wing player can only be so productive without the ability to score from distance.

As last season’s playoffs illustrated, wings who are unable to make shots consistently dramatically lose their value, often coming off the court in the most critical moments. Rarely seeing more than 30 minutes per game, their fantasy value is inherently capped by their role.  Since their value is often defined by the inability to space the floor, these players are conversely overlooked and undervalued in fantasy basketball as well.

However, this perception can create excellent draft-day value for fantasy owners as well as spawn one of this season’s biggest fantasy sleepers.

Despite his rank at 163 in the Razzball’s current Top 200 rankings, Phoenix Suns forward T.J. Warren has a unique opportunity to breakout in his sophomore year by shattering fans fixation with 3-and-D wings as well.
