@Lasandro: It was so different than last year. Last year everyone was spending like crazy and this year people stopping bidding once they determined the guy was no longer a value. Good job getting Stanley back and saving $13. I like McCaw for $7, LaVert for $7. Sabonis is high at $28 (Chriss $28, Jaylen $28) but a rookie with guaranteed minutes is well worth the risk. Good prices on Noah and Lou. You are going into this year with WAYYYY more minutes than you did last year.

@Lasandro: @Slim: All about dem minutes!

      • Lasandro says:
        (link)

@Slim: Haha you hit the nail on the head! I was one of those conservative players and prob should’ve dived in on Dunn, but I wanted to see what else was around. I am absolutely pumped about getting StanJo back cheaper than before. Appreciate the love on my LaVert and McCaw buys, and yes, agreed re: Sabonis right now. I see upside in him. Noah had to be on my squad and I wanted to be somewhat competitive in big man and assists cats.

Haha yes indeed, but I’m still not in win-now mode. Very much playing the long game here.. you’ll likely know when I’m ready to unleash the wrath of my Love, without the Glove.

So glad the podcasts are back, makes that morning commute so much better.

Would you rather justise Winslow or Terrance jones going into the season?

@miles proudfoot: Thanks man, we’re happy to be back! I’m gonna stick with Winslow, I know Tjones looks good in preseason, but man I have trouble seeing him get enough run to best Winslow outta the gate

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@miles proudfoot: That’s real tough. Terrence is probably better while he plays, even in a few fewer minutes. But how much trust do you really have in him? If you have a healthy team I wouldn’t be against taking the risk with TJones.

    MCCAWWW!

Loved listening to your play by play of the first 2.75 rounds, to bad we just missed both of your reactions of me raging at Slim for his Zubac nomination. I swear it’s like he had my big board, your working with the Russians Slim, “shakes fist”. I laughed hard at you two talking about Zizic as an overseas hold and mentioning Saric, while at around that same time in the draft I was adding Zizic to my queue plotting for him to become my new Saric, still rebuilding and need center depth so I’ll gladly wait on $1 Zizic and his 22/9 on 69.5%/84.8% shooting.

I named my team Foreign Affairs as a joke to myself while stashing Saric but now I’ve really lived up to the name with Embiid, Bender, Zubac, Saric, Zizic, Dieng, Wiggins, Skal of Haiti, Mudiay from the Congo.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Foreign Affairs: McCAWWWWWWWWW!!! Hah yeah the Zubac yelling was pretty fun, sucks we wrapped there. Hahaha we read your mind! Zizic is absolutely tearing it up overseas…

So much international! Love it! I love that the NBA has become this international in general…

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Foreign Affairs: I didn’t want a high upside guy going for too cheap (besides Juancho!) so I tried to keep nominating them while there were enough people who could fight for them, at least the guys who were over my $11. I’m jealous of the Bender $22 buy, I would have kept going had I had enough to. Yeah Zizic isn’t for me, but certainly worthwhile for a rebuild. There’s plenty more out there… Qi, Yabusele, Korkmaz, Brice Johnson, Malachi, Bembry, Beasley.

You know… McCaw for $7 was completely reasonable.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Foreign Affairs: @Slim: I had Yabusele in my queue too… I debated Johnson but his back is too messed up.

        • Foreign Affairs says:
          (link)

@Slim: @JB Gilpin: I was so excited to get Bender especially at that cost, I got lucky you had already paid the big bucks on Kris Dunn, I had Bender at around 30 and I’m glad I got Zizic at $1 after how successful Saric is looking as a stash and that I’m pretty sure Zizic is coming overseas after this season, Amir and Jonas’ contracts will be up and I’m not high on Kelly Olynyk so theres a good opportunity there, the fact that he’s doing so well in the Adriatic league that Nurkic and Jokic came out of has me stoked.

I think Walton not playing Zubac helped me get him at $15 which while I really like Sabonis and believe in Thon that $15 is better then $28 and $22 and I don’t believe Mozgov and Black are the long term answers there, plus Zubac is a huge Lakers fan and is working with old man Bill Bertka(worked with Wilt/Kareem/Shaq) trying to master the Sky Hook and has had some practice with Kareem.

Im surprised I got Kay Felder for $1, Delly’s not there, sounds like Mo Williams is gone, Kyrie hasn’t exactly been a bastion of health and Lue has said that Felder won the backup spot so there’s going to be minutes, he easily replaces my $1 Joe Young as my young pg depth.

I think I let myself get to gun shy this year worrying I would miss players like last year when I quickly bought 15 Kobe,22 Dirk ,31 Mudiay(still debating that one), 20 Willie Cauley Stein,21 Z-bo, 10 David Lee uhhh and missed out on Kristaps, Winslow, Booker, Exum, Embiid(pursued him most of the year to get him) Oubre and Fournier. So I got $33 burning a hole in my wallet now (should have thrown that at Brown or Chriss) but hey if I can compete next year I can toss it at a few vets or my favorite rookie.

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@Slim: @Foreign Affairs: Yup can’t disagree with any of that! Yeah no Amir and twin towers Horford and Zizic could get sexy by 2018. Mehhhhh, for Felder I bet they would bring in a vet if Kyrie got hurt. But for a $1 gamble it’s all good. Dirk 22 ended up being a value! Big part of my title aspirations this year 🙂

Sorry for the miscommunication during draft. I swear I had skype open and ready. I would have loved to talk about Chriss buy. Also happy about Valentine for $7. Sorry to steal Siakam from him you. My plan was ibaka and waiver fodder, but when he went past my max bid, I pivoted to the rookies. I’m just happy I was able to finish my draft with $0. Can’t wait for this year, with my high risk, high reward team.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Heat apologist: No worries! I have your Skype and pinged ya on it, but I guess you didn’t get it. I think you might need to accept my contact request? I also was kinda scrambling to try to figure it out while hosting, it was tough haha. We will 100000% get this right for next year, just be sure we can sync up beforehand.

Siakam was rude. RUDE! Valentine for $7 was a decent value. I was happy with my buys, Luwawu for some upside, and I think Scola and Withey will play enough to be holds outta the gate. Can’t wait either man!

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Heat apologist: Siakam is going to be a tough keeper at that price ($13) but not impossible. Valentine at $7 was surprising, his preseason injury kept his price down. Actually those prices should probably be flipped. Chriss at $28 might be the best price of the draft. Kid looks amazing.

What are your thoughts on exum this season? He’s been playing decent in summer league.

And do you really believe henson will exceed 20+ mins? I’m still hunting for someone w good multicat upside and reliable PT, but only choices are the likes of snell. Other fliers are lauvergne and nance, but ehhh i don’t know.

D william (dallas) or ish smith… i need to let go one for a C… aiming toward sullinger/alex len/gibson (how would you rank them)?

also, who do you think have most chance to be rosterable C

    Reeds
    Hernangomez
    Portis
    Nicholson (PF)
    Chriss (PF)

    thanks!

@TheJohn: or what is miles plumee outlook?? he starting!

      • Slim

        Slim says:
        (link)

@TheJohn: Yeah Plumlee I guess. Reed is looking at 14-16 min. Neither Hernangomez is going to play enough. Portis has upside and is probably #2. Nicholson is just for %s but looks to have a solid bench role, maybe 20-24 min. Chriss is the lottery pick. I would probably hold Chriss and see what happens the 1st couple of games, if he isn’t getting enough minutes then find someone else.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@TheJohn: @Slim: I’d say Sullinger is who to get, but damn I wouldn’t wanna drop either PG. I guess it would be Deron for me, I think Ish will be must-own for a while. Yeah of the next list you give I’d want Portis or Chriss ahead of Plumlee too

        • TheJohn says:
          (link)

@Slim: would u give up ish or william for len?

mayb if i can push for gibson/sullinger?

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@TheJohn: Nah I wouldn’t for Len. I’d probably hold the PG and see if one starts really hot and try to sell higher

  7. Slim

    Slim says:
    (link)

Yep, can’t complain at all. Dunn $35, and what I considered the best PG available is what I needed (and steals are one of my worst cats that I don’t want to punt). That price means I think he’ll eventually be a 2nd rounder (in redraft) but I’m not banking on that happening this year. But Thibbs drafted him so at least we know he likes him (unlike LaVine apparently, really is Rush starting?) I waited forever for Juancho and I thought $6 was a terrific price. The other option was Taurean Prince but he went for $12 and I didn’t have that anyway. Even if Juancho doesn’t get off the bench the low price tag means he maintains solid trade value regardless. And he has looked real solid in the preseason. He’s my poor mans Bender. Nicholson for $4, looks solid in preseason, no one trusts Markieff, Mahinmi is hurt. I thought it was a good win now piece. Sergio Rodriguez $2, my other choices were Galloway or Temple and I went with the assist upside. Esp with Reggie, Hayward down for a while.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Slim: Huh why you think Rush is starting?! I’ve just never been a Nicholson guy, but he does have an opportunity. Yeah that Sergio buy was nice. I just needed bigs.

      • Slim

        Slim says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Rush isn’t… everyone was resting. Thibbs comments on Dunn were inspiring though. He definitely sees him starting this year even without an injury or trade. Dunn’s defense is light years ahead of LaVine so I think he’s thinking about LaVine as a high USG bench guy who only has to defend backups. Still a 3 man guard rotation means they all get 30 minutes eventually anyway.

Sergio has 6 assist upside… and that’s it. They paid him 8mil for 1 year. His minutes are all but guaranteed even if he doesn’t start.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Slim: Yeah I could see that. I still feel like LaVine’s physical tools should have him be a better defender, but hasn’t worked so far.

          • Foreign Affairs says:
            (link)

@Slim: @JB Gilpin: I threw Sergio out there specifically for you Slim, in the later rounds I was trying to nominate players other people would draft to take up their roster space and I figured after dropping Beverly you would be looking for a cheap pg for the season.

Dunn’s defense has been terrific and it will definitely be a 3 man rotation with those 3 this year since Dunn’s weakest area in scoring isn’t needed that badly when Towns and Wiggins are beasting. Im curious to see how LaVine improves on D under Thibs JB, it’s looked like they were focused on his improving his offense last year and let his defense coast with Towns, Wiggins and Rubio there to cover, which will be a different story with Thibs.

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@Slim: @Foreign Affairs: He got a steal last night that was definitely a foul! Hah but yeah I think he had 4… Crazy. But yeah, LaVine has the tools to be a better D guy, we’ll see what happens.

  8. Marshall says:
    (link)

Who would prefer to take as a flier: Jerami Grant, Teletovic or Tony Parker?

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Marshall: It’s pretty need dependant. Teletovic is purely for 3s, don’t plan on anything else. Parker is for assists and FG%, but the lack of 3s and steals and minutes makes him tough to justify. Grant has actual upside, he blocks shots, he hits 3s, the Simmons injury and Saric struggling mightily opens up all kinds of minutes for him. But, be weary of the FT% issues. He’s currently at about 75% though in preseason so there’s still hope for that too.

      • Marshall says:
        (link)

@Slim: Thanks Slim. Yeah, my team really needs some 3s and points upside with Bayless and Parsons down (can’t see either playing in the opener…). I’m almost flipping a coin between Teletovic, Matt Barnes and Dudley

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Slim: @Marshall: Agree, completely based on need. Pure 3s/Pts, I’ll go Teletovic, but I like Barnes a lot this year and I think Dudley could surprise for a while…

          • Marshall says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: Actually, I went with Lyles for now, just to see what happens with the all Favors situation. I know he is day-to-day but it’s Favors…it could easily be one week or more.

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@Marshall: Hah true. Without Favors, AND without Hayward, Lyles could push for… 19 PPG maybe?

              • Marshall says:
                (link)

@<a href="#comment-That's probably the ceiling…no? But I can see him score a ton with 2.5 3s per game and some boards, that's pretty useful for me!

                • JB Gilpin

                  JB Gilpin says:
                  (link)

@Marshall: Oh 100% the ceiling, and also a very temporary outlook. He also offers nearly 0 AST/STL/BLK though, so keep that in mind

  9. A Hill O' Beans says:
    (link)

As far as I lasted in this draft before I got my 3 guys (which was shockingly just under an hour), I’ve gotta say, the prices were way more reasonable than I was expecting. From a quick glance of what happened after I left it actually looks like that continued other than a couple guys who got bid up high because people needed to spend their money. Surprising for sure. I thought for sure someone like Simmons was going high 40s even with the injury.

I went in with 3 goals for my team. 1) Draft a PG who is going to play plenty. 2) Draft one of the rookies I like, and do it at a price that will make them a good keeper going forward. 3) Get some 3s since that was one of my big weaknesses last season. Bonus 4) Get some depth to help cover Middleton being out at the wing.

I ended up getting Tyreke as my PG for a solid (once he’s healthy) $13. Assuming he comes back from the whole blood-clot thing okay (and his other injuries), that will be a very good price going forward for a guy who has been around a top 60-70 guy the past couple years. I think I can wait out the injury, and if he’s back in December that would be fine with me.

For the 3s I got Casspi at what was a surprising $6, and he also covered my bonus goal too. I really thought he’d go for around $10-12. When they ship Gay out by the deadline I think he is gonna get a little boost, which should be nice for an end of season/playoffs boost for me. McCaw was my other target but I didn’t want to go past $6, plus I figured he’d go higher than $7. Again, lower prices than I expected.

For my rookie I decided to steal Papa Giorgio away from JB. I’m not entirely convinced he plays this year in the first half, but I think he gets a shot in the second half. At $4 if he works out I’m going to love this pick. I’m trying to keep my rookie big man love going in this league. Year 1 it was N.Noel who I got, and S.Adams who I lost out to Slim for. Year 2 it was Embiid, who I wish I still had but his re-injury made him unkeepable at $20, though I tried to get him back but since I was eyeing the championship I didn’t have enough to gamble on him with. I also made my play for J.Nurkic that year and I again narrowly lost out to Slim. Year 3 I would not quit on Nikola Jokic, going higher than I thought I should, and boy am I glad I did. This year my guy is Papa Giorgio so, don’t let me down man! Keep the tradition going.

Somehow I now have 3 Sacramento Kings on my REL team. That simply cannot be a good thing, especially since none are named DeMarcus Cousins. Here’s hoping they trade Gay and Cousins this season!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans: Agree with this. I was sooooo almost gonna go Casspi at $7. I’m the one that big him up even to 6 haha.

Meh, Papa G wasn’t a big target of mine, I think I nommed him just trying to get to my later targets. He is a big boy, but I dunno if durability is there, plus as you mentioned, it’s the mother F kings. plus you got an injured Pelican haha. And you know how I feel about that! All jokes aside, you did really well with limited capital. Fear my Westbrook though. Fear him.

  10. justin says:

hey got my draft tonight for 8 person. 9 cat h2h. i have the 3rd pick. i think steph may fall to me at 3. but what should my strategy be for the next rounds. i was thinking millsap as 2nd pick, or should i follow your ranks and go lowry? steph and lowry start would be nice. and then i could go brook or porzingis in 3rd. also, is it better to add guys like conley and teague compared to shroeder and deangelo in this build right? let me know your thoughts.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@justin: If Millsap lasts, I def would go that direction. I’d want to destroy the % categories and get some blocks. I’d like Brook in the build more than Porzingis, and yeah, lower TO guy. Go for balance and %s, it’s what I did with Curry in this draft ->http://basketball.razzball.com/jb-vs-slim-random-commenter-league-draft-recap

      • justin says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: ok. but if millsap is gone, then lowry plus brook would be a good bet? im really hoping to get giannis in 2nd round but not sure if he will be there.

      • justin says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: and yeh i like bledsoe in that build as well. kinda confused about elfrid tho? how does he fit the good % team.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@justin: Yeah Lowry and Brook would work nice. Giannis even better! Well, not every single pick fit the strategy. I needed AST and he was best source remaining. Also his FG% isn’t horrific, it’s only bad bc he doesn’t shoot 3s either, but I don’t need 3s. And I think his ft will be better

  11. Threekola says:

    Current team:

    PGs: Curry, Conley, Shroeder, Ish
Wings: Draymond, Covington, Wes Matthews, Winslow
Bigs: Brolo, Ibaka, Pau, Capela, Sully

IL: Collison(please dont hate my team now) and Noel

I scooped up Ish and Capela to replace colly and noel for now, although I do think I can get some trade value from one of them at least, especially Capela to the right team.

Right now, Jamychal Green is available and I’m thinking I want him over Sully. How do you feel about that? Wanna package Sully and a player for a better version of that player and just replace Sully with Green.

I’m thinking of a couple of trades right now…

    1) Give away Capela + Noel to get Gobert.
    2) Give away Sullinger and Wes Matthews to get Ariza
    3) Give away Sullinger and Covington to get Ariza (I’ll try to give Wes first cause I want Covingtons steals combined with Arizas)

What do you think about these so far?

Also thinking of doing the same idea but packaging Ish instead of Sully and replacing him with Delly.

    Thanks!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Threekola: Hah I don’t hate your team with Colly… Meh, I think Sully has more upside. They’re actually fairly similar though. Sully is gonna have a chance to shoot a lot of 3s and he’s been awful doing that so far in his career so we’ll see. 1. Love, doubt he’ll take 2) Like it a ton, not as much as #1 3) Same, like it, not as much as 1 or 2.

Glad to learn Nurkic has earned the starting C spot! Hah. Should we expect a 9-10 boards a game? If that were to happen then him and Towns should help my team become competitive in the rebounding department! Dario and Kief both had a nice game too! If let’s for example say Dario, Tobias H and Kief all average like 6-7 boards a game each; and RHJ chips in 5 per contest, is that enough to win Boards on a regular basis? (14 teamer)

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Dante Green: Meh, seems a little steep with MPG concerns still there. Not sure Saric quite gets to that either. Kieff should and Harris might be close given his minutes. I dunno about “win on a regular basis”, but def will keep you competitive most weeks in a 14er
