Razzup fantasy freaks! I will be on a 14-team highly, 9-cat money league, I am set as pick 11 on our snake drafts, assuming I get wall as my 1st pick, who can I best pair with him as my 2nd pick? In case its jimmy buckets or demarcus as my 1st pick, whos my 2nd then, if I’d like to to be competetive in all 9 categories?

    • JB Gilpin

@hisXLNZ: Razzup man?! Love getting Gobert next to Wall. Gets you elite in several categories and helps Wall TO. If Cousins, then I might go wing like a Klay Thompson to help cut down on TO rate. Wall/Gobert is certainly my preference

What do you guys think, I’m considering trading for pg position to get more asists and steals, players like Teague or Monta.

hey guys question about punting while being a high activity streamer

last year I won 8 cat roto using a punt FT% build while doing a ton of streaming. that league had 6 starting lineup spots. it was my first time playing so that’s what I’m accustomed to

another league i’m in this year uses 10 cats (OREB and TO) and a whopping 12 starting spots (and only 4 bench).

if I intend to do a lot of streaming I should plan on usually losing TO? So in that case I wouldn’t want to punt any other categories?

And if there’s 12 teams with 16 roster spots, is that league sufficiently deep enough that streaming is relatively less helpful, since the available player pool would be lower in quality?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@dom: Interesting, you must have killed it in the other cats to win an 8 cat roto that way.

Yup, that’s exactly how I play TO leagues – I don’t worry about losing TO but want to go heavy at the other categories. I still don’t go out and draft only TO prone guys though.

Streaming is still huge in that league, it’s actually just as necessary and even a little easier in that you you can stream 3-4 guys that you’ll never lose sleep over cutting

      • dom says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: thanks for the input JB. yeah, that team was really good, once I traded for Drummond the punt was on, made a couple 2 for 1’s to free up roster spots and simply played more games than everyone else. I even managed to finish first in FG%, not just the countings

a big part of this was streaming quality games, the opposite of what slim calls heavy nights (referring to the number of NBA games happening that night). someone said there are less of those this year as the NBA wants to reduce back to backs or something and are letting more teams play on Thursdays and Sundays. The thing is some teams play significantly more games on the lighter nights than others, making those players more valuable simply via regular season scheduling

so I think that’s the last step of my preparation, to find the quality game data (I don’t know where to find it besides basketballmonster subscription) and pair that with your rankings and slim’s playoff schedule analysis and get fucking after it

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@dom: Cool nice! Yup with a shallow amount of guys you start every night, it’s definitely good taking advantage of that. Not to spoil anything, but we’ll have a weekly planner on Monday mornings to plan out streams on the light nights

          • dom says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: just realized the playoff format in one of my leagues is 2 rounds of 2 weeks, starting week 20. so does this actually mean less worrying about playoff schedule?

this would appear to completely change slim’s playoff rankings. for instance, basketballmonster is telling me Jimmy Butler & da bulls have 13 playoff games, while the Spurs have 15.

the range of # of playoff games is 16 (Boston, GS, NYK) to 12 (CLE and Dallas) how should I interpret all of this?

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@dom: Yup, with 2 weeks worth it evens out the playing field. Still mostly avoiding the Cavs though, 12 games and a lot of vets to bench late. Other than that, going for best value and throwing it out

    Hi All,
I am organizing a 10 team H2H Points league on Yahoo. There are only 7 CATS. They are:
    PTs….worth 1 pt.
    3/s….worth 3pts
    REBs… worth 2pts.
    BLKs…worth 8 pts.
    ASSts…worth 3 pts
    STLs…worth 8 pts
    TOs worth (-1 pt)

The point values were set up to broadly approximate the comparative frequency of each CAT. It’ll obviously be a different ride than a H2H CATS league, but I’m expecting it to have room for lots of strategy and nerdy finger counting .

The rosters will be 15 players. There will be NO gerneric F or G or utility positions. There will be 2 centers, 2 PFs, 2 SFs, 2 SGs, 2 PGs plus 5 on the bench.

We have 4/10 slots filled. If this league interests you please check it out.
It’s under Yahoo CUSTOM LEAGUES H2H points
The league is called FANTASY HOOPLA
The live draft is SUNDAY, 10/25th at 5:15 p.m.
    LEAGUE # 51387

    1. Hi guys. I have 2nd pick in a 14 man. What’s your argument for picking harden over curry? Curry has the stronger sched (4 4 4) but the possibly spurs-like rotation and lower mins. Also, since it seems my 2nd pick via mocks are likely draymond or bled, should I reach for someone like favors or noel in round 3 once all the elite centers are off the board?

    2. 16m/11 cat with the 10th pick. If I miss out on lillard and wall, is gobert/ibaka too much of a reach at 10? Klay and jimmy seem so boring, and i really don’t want to build around hawks. kawhi has burned me several times and the spurs sched sucks. thoughts on who i should get in case the pgs are gone?

    • hamtime says:
      (link)

@hamtime: to add to Q1) by reaching for favors/noel, i would be missing out on guys like wiggins, hayward, etc based on your rankings. just worried i would lose out positionally if i drafted purely based on your ranks.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@hamtime: Hey man! 1 – Yup that’s the argument, Curry played a ton more mins through last year and I think he is eased off. I like Harden’s FT volume and a few more Pts to pair with a big man. Yup I would def get a bi in the first 3 rounds. Wiggins would be tough for me to pass on, but since your build needs a big I’d have no issue with it.

        2. Well 10th would have Cousins too, he’s my clear guy there. Gobert I have 11 so I wouldn’t mind it.

You know where Bobby Portis would look REALLY good? On a team where he could start, a team that desperately wants spacing, defense and rebounding from the 4. A team that drafted right before the Bulls at 20, but instead of taking him took a fairly low upside third string point guard.

That team is the Toronto Raptors and they could probably start him ahead of Patrick Patterson!

    Haha, sorry, but it’s true.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans: Hahahaha yeah man he would be crazy upside-y for you guys! Can’t believe he fell…

    • CTMN says:
      (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans: For that same reasoning, I think Anthony Bennett will take the starting job from Patterson, which he did last game anyway. He’s a better rebounder, can space the floor (and is actually willing to shoot, unlike Patterson), and he’s at least trying harder on defense than ever before.
Ironic: A TON of people thought the Raps should’ve taken Portis at 20, which they could’ve done!!! SMH instead we take Delon Wright to be our 3rd PG. People justified it by saying that we would keep Amir and that didn’t happen..so why didn’t we take Portis again?

      • A Hill O' Beans says:
        (link)

@CTMN: I think they took the “safer” Wright this year partly because they reached so much last year with Bruno. What they should have done is take Capella last year and Portis this year. Now that would have been nice!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@CTMN: @A Hill O’ Beans: Wow, Bennett starting? I guess it’s possible but I bet they start out with Patterson. I feel pretty good projecting Patterson at under 30 minutes though hah

          • A Hill O' Beans says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: @CTMN: I could see Bennett starting, if only because, well, Casey. Nothing has to actually make sense with him.

            • CTMN says:
              (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans: I’d personally be happy if Bennett starts. Maybe I’m just biased because I live half an hour from Brampton (definitely not in Brampton, though, if you know what Brampton is like!), where Bennett is from.
But he’s really young, he’s athletic, he has some potential, and he barely got an opportunity in his first 2 years.

              • A Hill O' Beans says:
                (link)

@CTMN: I just bought a new car in Brampton, so yeah, I know what it’s like, ha-ha. And no, I live quite a bit farther from Brampton than you do, so I don’t live in Brampton either.

I wouldn’t mind seeing him start, I do not like Patterson next to Jonas, I think Bennett could be a much better fit if he can get things going for himself.

                • CTMN says:
                  (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans: Haha, GTA connection, awesome!
                  I agree about the fit.

                    JB Gilpin says:
                    (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans: @CTMN: Yeah there’s no doubt Bennett has the upside over PitPat, but damn you guys seem to shit on PitPat so much! He’s very blah, but Bennett seems to be so inconsistent… Of course like you said, has been given inconsistent oppos as well..

                    • CTMN says:
                      (link)

@JB Gilpin: Yeah we might be a bit too harsh on PP lol. I actually think off the bench he’s solid though, I think he just fits better with the second unit.

  16. DK says:
    (link)

I am a total noob on auction draft. Doesn’t help that my upcoming Dynasty league is a 20-man. Max I have played past 3 years is 14-man. Rules pretty much same as your REL Dynasty. I have access to your top-200 auction prices. But this is 340! My knowledge probably extends only to around 250 players.

Any help for 1 week crash course on how to best do auction draft? What’s the usual auction strategy? On snake draft approach is generally PG/C/PG/C/Wing and then adjust accordingly. Probably applies same to auction too. But how much is overpaying or being too cheap? Having used to draft position is totally different from having $200 to bid on basically any players.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@DK: So in dynasty, certainly throw those values out the window and focus on youth and minutes. Don’t invest a lot of money in a vet. Spend you big money on younger guys and hope they stay valuable at that price for years. Then fill out with vets in the midrange. Like I love Jose Calderon at $8 in our league, shocked he went so cheap. Ya know, guys like that to fill out. And try to leave yourself at least $2-$3 per player for your final few picks, as I had only $5 for my last 5 spots and it was torture, I couldn’t bid on any nominations, and if anyone bid on a guy I nommed, I was toast

      • DK says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Thanks the the advice, JB. Young potential players with potentially big minutes in the future. Even though players like Gobert, Wiggins will be highly overpriced. How do I even know how much to bid? Should I even go for ultra expensive like AD, Harden, Curry? I know I also like players like Draymond, Kawhi, Butler or even Lillard since they are young and proven.

I briefly read about stars/scrubs or balance mid range players. What’s your take on this and how does this affect 20 man dynasty?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@DK: Sure, yeah those guys might go for too much being soooo young. I wouldn’t pay more than $80 on anyone. Brow is $73 in our league, and I think it’s a solid value. I’d probably try to get one elite big and one elite PG. Then you want to fill out minutes as best you can, I would say stars and mid-to-low range haha. It’s hard to project values, I’d just be sure to have enough to get enough role players that work

  17. Dante Green says:
    (link)

I’m going to try and move both MSmart and ABradley for a more decent PG. It would also free up a roster spot for Nurkic…

    • Slim

      • Dante Green says:
        (link)

@Slim: How serious was Nurkic’s knee surgery? I know he’ll be eased in slowly, but how good can he actually be once he’s adjusted and doesn’t suffer any setback? I wanna pick him up now!

          Slim says:
          (link)

@Dante Green: Torn left patella tendon is serious. I don’t think he plays to start the year and he’s going to come on EXTREMELY slow. I doubt he sees 30min even once this year. Next year will be his year if he can stay healthy.

          • Dante Green says:
            (link)

@Slim: Damnn… So it’s a wait-and-see approach. Like at least observe a few good games before I pounce on the guy… Just damn!! Thanks Slim

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@Slim: @Dante Green: Oh I dunno about that, Feb-April I think we see his minutes ramped up to over 30 a few times, agree it’ll be rare. About as rare as a Cam Newton accurate throw, JFC he’s like Kaepernick out here! It was “partially” torn so that helps, but in RCL with 2 IL spots I’m stashing

I get choice of draft pick in a league(won league last year) with no razzball readers. 10 teams btw. Not too sure where I should pick. 1 seems pretty obvious but I don’t want to miss out on value guys in the late 1st and early 2nd that guys might miss. And I’m a little shaky about the brows injury issues. I find it so hard to predict how others will draft in this league so any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance!

@Kris: Markieff stands out as easily being the best, then Tucker but it’s a pretty big falloff. Markieff should NOT be available.

        @Slim:

Markieff got signed. What do you think of Marcus Morris? He’s available.

        • Slim

          Slim says:
          (link)

@Kris: Marcus is looking like a pretty solid add. I drafted him late in both of my RCLs. Maybe Stanley pushes him for minutes but he should play some PF too. His minutes looks secure. Vs Tucker is close. Tucker should give more steals but I’ve been backing off Tucker for a few days now, TJ Warren looks good and might turn it into a timeshare. Hood has some upside but I’m not sure he gets enough minutes. Worth keeping an eye on though incase they turn him into a stretch 4. About the only way he sniffs 30 min.

          • Kris says:
            (link)

            @Slim:

Will keep an eye on hood, warren and tucker. I added Marcus just now.

@Slim: @Kris: Damnnnnnnn yeah Markieff would’ve been an unreal add, surprised he was out there. I don’t quite get the Hood love, there’s someone Slim I don’t think ever plays over 30 min if/until theres an injury. I would get Tucker if your team is light on guards and needs STL/REB, Marcus for a little more upside especially in PTS/3s

Looks good and it looks like his FG% isnt an issue. And a big… DeAndre maybe since it looks like FT% isnt an issue. Yeah i like that start.

    Plumlee
    Myles Turner

    1. (3) Harden
    2. (18) Ibaka
    3. (23) Milsap
    4. (38) Horford
    5. (43) Monta
    6. (58) Kyrie

    8. (78) Mirotic
    9. (83) Elfrid

    11. (103) Deron Williams
    12. (118) Aaron Gordon
    13. (123) Amir Johnson
    14. (138) John Henson

We had a pretty hard PG run early so I missed Teague, Bledsoe, Lowry before my pick in the 3rd. Then I couldn’t pass on value for Milsap and Horford, so thought I’d take a flyer on Kyrie, fingers crossed!

    Thanks in advance!

  31. Michael says:
    (link)

    Hey JB/Slim

Just been noticing a trend with teams drafted using razz ball rankings –

There are so many teams with like 5-6 super young guys with loads of upside (I see a lot of teams all with Wiggins, Turner, Gordon, Terrance Jones, Jordan Clarkson, Stanley Johnson, Meyers Leonard etc)

My question is does it hurt to have a load of these high upside guys on one team? And if so, what would you recommend is an ideal number of 1st/2nd year players on your team? It seems to me that a lot of these guys are likely to start the year quite slow, and will mature into high value players later on. Having a bunch of these guys on the same team will limit your wins early in season and will make it super tough to get into the playoffs.

Loving the content + pods, thanks for all your hard work!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Michael: No I don’t think it hurt, unless you do nothing but upside youth with no stability. Hard to assemble a team even like that, but something really odd like Wiggins #1 (would never happen), then like KAT 2, etc etc etc would be. The thing if for example you had those 7 you list above filled out with vets, is you didn’t spend much on StanJo/Turner/Leonard, so in a 12er it’s no sweat losing them. In a deeper league, you certainly want a little more stability.

I still have two more RCL drafts, but in my first one I got Wiggins and Gordon and that was it for the younguns. I think I try to swing for the home runs with at least 2-3 picks up until the last 3-4 rounds and stability everywhere else, but of course it comes down to value and where guys fall, etc etc. After pick 100 or so, yeah I could easily end up having my final 4 guys all be youth too since I could just drop them all for who is off the wire if none work out, and be ecstatic if I hit 50%. Thanks for listening and reading man!

  33. Herman the German says:
    (link)

    Hey Guys from germany,

I have the feeling that Rudy Gobert could turn into Larry Sanders 2.0 this year. For an early second round Pick he has alot of weaknesses. He almost gives you no Assists, no 3s, very little points, is under 1.0 steal and could kill your FT% if he shoots around 5-6 per Game.

If his Blocks dip to around 1.8-2.0 i could see him being a fantasy bust this year. The Price is very high in my opinon. Larry Sanders had the same kind of hype 2 years ago and then his blocks dipped and with that his ranking. I mean Gobert is still a great player, but i fear he is not worthy a early secound round selection. Blocks also ar not that hard to find anymore i think. I would rather build my team around one of the Gasol Brothers with no weakness in their game than Rudy.

    What do you think?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Herman the German: Greetings, thanks for reading! Hmmmm I don’t get that feeling at all… First, Rudy is just by far the superior athlete. Second, he doesn’t seem to have the off-the-court issues. No way I see the blocks dipping that low. And yes, Rudy doesn’t help those cats, but you’re assembling the best 9 cat team and he destroys it where he does. Nah Sanders peaked at maybe 30 overall, Rudy’s consensus is easily top 20. Blocks at the elite level are still pretty hard to find, and with Gasol – specifically Pau – injury risk is a big part of the ranking

      • Herman the German says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:

Thanks for your answer. I’m a little bit scared when it comes to Rudy around Pick 12 to 15. I don’t think that we will see many championship Teams this year that have him on their roster. This fast risers Fantasy BB Big Man for the most part were a disappointment. Valenciunas, Hibbert, Sanders, Drummond for example. I would rather have guys like Favors or Marc Gasol in the following rounds. Rudy may not be the worst Free Throw Shooter but even 63% on 5 FTs per Game are a Killer against the Top Teams in Fantasy. Rebounds you can find later in the draft and if you pick him you feel free to ignore Big Man for many rounds after Round 2. Which is not good in my opinion. Drafting him this early also makes you a little bit predictable in the next rounds cause everybody knows you need points and assists badly. Drafting DeAndre 2 to 3 Rounds later seems better to me cause their almost the same only that Jordan kills your FT% even more. But i dont think this is that important if Gobert is your best player in a 12 or 14 Team League.

btw. i love your podcast keep up the good work.

@Herman the German: Well to be fair, only Valanciunas in his 2nd year did I ever rank highly, and I had him 50th. I’ve personally never had those guys into the crazy high range. I disagree that Rudy at that rate would kill you against the best teams – if you can build around it with no other negatives at FT, you’re right there. Plus then he brings advantages in other cats. I also disagree that getting him in the 2nd round means you ignore big man until many rounds later. DeAndre is going to kill you a lotttttttt more. One point you make is certainly true though – Rudy teams already have a tough start since they are late picks in 1st round to get him in 2nd, so you don’t have a superstar.

But for Rudy himself, post-ASB he was 19th according to basketballmonster, so he’s already shown a good stretch at producing great value.

          Thanks for listening, great convo!

            @JB Gilpin:

I was just talking about the Hype itself when it comes to players that had one good year and Yahoo/Espn Rankings overall not your own Rankings in particular. Its ok too rank Rudy there but i would not take him that high.

Yes Rudy was great post ASB, but for me he is a very boring Pick this early. There is almost no upside in my opinion. His best case is maybe 12-15 because of low TOs and great FG% but even that won’t be easy. The other Teams now know who Rudy Gobert is and will look to find ways against him. You will not ignore Big Man in Rounds 3-5 on on purpose but it can happen cause you need Points and Assists that often don’t come in one Player. So if Rudy is your #1 Player you will take a PG and a Wing that scores much after him. In deeper League we are in Round 4-5 now and the most reliable guys will be gone already.

Overall i think DeAndre is not much worse than Rudy. Because Rudy’s Teams for the most part won’t be that good in FT% either. Even if you get Harden or Durant to pair in a 10 Team League it won’t be easy cause you will draft some more Bigs later that maybe hurt your FT% too (thats what most late Bigs do). DeAndre is better in PTS, FG%, REB and Steals than Rudy plus even in TOs and Assists for the most part. He only gets 0.3-0.5 Blocks less maybe and kills your FT% for sure. But thats it. Now you can ask yourself what is better?

Im exited to see what Rudy brings this year. Thanks again for answering.

@Herman the German: Sure, does he have a great shot to finish higher? Probably not. But for team construction, you can get an elite C at the turn in a 12 team, I like it. My ranks are for 12 team leagues, so yes in a 16er I might tinker a little. My rank fits for a 12/13 pick to get Gobert and maybe Klay or Lillard hopefully or something to offset some of Gobert’s deficiencies.

Nah, compare post-ASB when Gobert was starting to DeAndre’s numbers. Everything is marginal or the same of what you mention, except FG%, which I expect to be closer too. 63.3% vs a high-volume 40% is a MASSIVE difference. Also I worry DeAndre’s minutes go down. No way he plays near 35 MPG again with how much he will be hacked.

I’m in a keeper, 10 team, 8 cat, head to head league. 13 player rosters, 10 starters (normal 5, Guard, Forward, and three utility spots). We keep 3 players for 25% more than they were last year for 3 years. This is our second year. Here is my post auction draft lineup with 1 trade

    PG- Eric Bledsoe- $28
    SG- Gordon Hayward- $13- Keeper
SF- Paul George- $4- Keeper- (long story, resulted in the Paul George rule in my league)
    PF- Anthony Davis- $96
    C- Nikola Vucivic- $9- Keeper
    G- Elfrid Payton
    F- Chris Bosh
Utility #1- Karl Athony Towns- $13
    Utility #2-Alec Burks- $1
    Utility #3- Robert Covington- $1
    Bench- Jabari Parker- $2
    Bench- Otto Porter-$1
    Bench-Rajon Rondo

    Any Thoughts?
    2 other points
1- I know I need a PG/SG who shoots 3s. Any thoughts on a target and who I should give up?
2- Aaron Gordon and Kristaps are available in my league. Do I pick them up, and for who?
    Thanks

FYI- The trade I did was Lawson, Jack, and Dieng for Payton, Bosh, and Porter. Thoughts?

@Sam celtics fan: Looks pretty good! Yeah 3s look like they’re a need. Damn that was a great trade! I have Peyton and Bosh WELL ahead of anyone you gave up. Definitely will need Towns right away to be a big blocker to be sure it’s enough with Brow.

Targets – Isaiah Canaan avail on FA? Isaiah Thomas would be a great fit too.

Oh yeah, def gimme Gordon for this team! His blocks should help. I’d take him over Porter

Seems like this is the page where everyone is posting their draft results lol. I don’t need a review on the cast, but I’ll add my draft results for a 14er H2H with 9-cats.

My seven keepers were: Westbrook, Ibaka, Vucevic, Whiteside, Gay, Dragic, Evans

    8th: Payton
    9th: Dieng
    10th: Covington
11th: Jabari Parker (TRADED FOR JRUE HOLIDAY+SWAP DRAFT ORDER IN NEXT RD)
    12th: Aaron Gordon
    13th: Henson
    14th: Mozgov
    15th: Zaza
    16th: Bjelica

I’m definitely happy with the results. Most players fell quite a bit because lot’s of players on loaded teams were released back into the draft pool. I would have liked a bit more guard or wing depth, but the quality of PG’s really fell after Payton and D-Will were taken. I also didn’t have many 3-pt shooters aside from Covington so I figured why not punt the category. There’s no way I’m beating the team with Curry, Lillard, and Thompson in 3’s anyways.

I may try flipping Whiteside to see if I can get some more guard depth. I’d be stoked if I can get someone like Lowry or Teague in return, and then maybe pick up Clint Capela off of waivers since he’s still there!

@Ryan: Hah cool, yeah this is where people are goin! Yikes, a team has all 3 of those?! That seems like 3PTM overkill haha. Yeah I like punting 3s or streaming when you can. Love the PG depth though, I think your depth there is fine.

Whoa yeah in a league that deep, Capela shouldn’t be out there! Yeah love the idea to trade Whitside, your blocks are very solid with good boards

What do you think about losing Kyle Oquinn for Justin Anderson, Frank Kaminsky, Courtney Lee, or Portis in a 12er?
    Teague
    R Jack
    Caanan
    CJ McCollum
    Mo Williams
    Jimmy Butler
    Mirotic
    Gobert
    Hibbert
    Stanley Johnson
    Thaddeus
    Alec Burks

Only thing is I’d be using my #2 waiver claim status. What do you think? I’m pretty solid at guards.
