The Razzball Elite League is back!  In season 3’s draft, we bring the Podcast to the mayhem for Slim and I’s favorite league…  Slim has a championship and I don’t!  It makes me about as angry as Slim bidding me up for Kelly Oubre!  In this special edition, we chronicle the first hour-and-a-half of the draft, with look-ins from Peter Kap and his Wizard fandom guiding his Bradley Beal buy, Adam and his value rookie buy followed by Kevin Love, and Slim’s brother Tim (Slim & Tim!) with his Al Jefferson purchase.  Tim is our medical expert soon to appear with injury analysis on the Pod; let’s hope our contract negotiations prove fruitful!  Here’s our special edition Podcast recapping the REL draft:

    thoughts on boogieman taking 3s?

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@eric: It makes sense since he’s probably playing most of his minutes next to Koufos or Cauley-Stein. It’s inevitably going to hurt his FG% though.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@eric: @Slim: Yup what Slim said!

  2. Lasandro says:
    (link)

Oh you are NOT a fan of me spending that much on Stanley, huh @Slim? Haha, quite a way for me to pop my dynasty cherry. I may have prematurely blown my wad. I just love him.

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Lasandro: Well… I’m not a fan of being outbid for him! It isn’t that bad. Obviously you weren’t the only one in on him for that price. You did really well with your cheap guys, like phenomenally well. There’s even some keeper potential there.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Lasandro: @Slim: Prematurely shot your wad on what turned out to be a dry run! Yeah KAT will be a nice piece to build around if a handful of cheaper guys work out

      • Lasandro says:
        (link)

@Slim aw, appreciate the kind words mate. Apart from my very last two picks, I tried to utilise my NBA knowledge as much as I could on every pick. Here’s hoping a couple of them get good run in real life. As far as this season is concerned, though.. no bueno.

@JB Gilpin and now I’ve got somewhat of a mess on my hands. Well, perhaps not too messy. I need to hold on to my boy KAT. And Elfrid and Stan are just too enticing for me to move in the near future. Thinking Horford will show slight improvement in popcorn stats with a touch more usage this season, so could make for a tasty trade morsel.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:

@Lasandro: Yup that would probably be the route to go!

  4. Smokin' Fine Cubans says:
    (link)

Hey JB – First time roundball poster. Thanks for all the great preseason work! Question for you. Have the #5 pick in an 12-team H2H ten cat. Add FG and substitute ATO for TO. Does CP3 or RWB jump KD or LBJ in that format?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Smokin’ Fine Cubans: thanks for dropping by, welcome! Appreciate it!

So FG is FGM = field goal made, right? That definitely helps KD and LBJ. I think those guys stay above the PG, Westbrook probably jumps Paul though. Well… Maybe not, very very close

  5. Kevin says:
    (link)

Man that draft was fun! Loved listening to the recap. I do wish I could’ve heard you guys yelling at each other (and us) about Oubre.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@Kevin: Hahahaha, yeah that woulda pushed it to the 2 hour mark and Slim can’t miss his Empire haha

  6. TP says:
    (link)

Keeper question- Lebron (lose first rounder) and Middleton (lose 12th rounder) or Curry (lose first rounder)?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@TP: I think I’d prefer just holding onto Curry, I have Middleton as about an 8th rounder, so I don’t think that’s enough of a value to go down to Curry

  7. ByeFelica says:
    (link)

    Sorry Slim
I was targeting 3-4 guys and they all went for astronomical prices so i had to get my hometown boy Myles. I’m a huge Pacers fan and i think Turner could end up as the best big man out of this draft class. I needed PG’s and it’s unfortunate. I wanted Payton but i didn’t see him going for that much. He could have been kept for under $20 and i would have happily traded predraft with the owner had i known he was throwing him back. Oh well. . Live and learn for next year. I had an idea how this would be but i didn’t anticipate the bidding. This is my first 20 team dynasty league.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Slim: @ByeFelica: Yup I am on the turner train obviously as well, but wish I had a little more confidence he’d start out of the gate. Welcome to the madness and hope you have fun man!

  8. Bryce Krispie Treats says:
    (link)

    Hey JB,

Any guys in the top 100 that stand out in a 7 cat league? (3 Pts, Pts, Reb, Asst, Stl, Blk, TO)?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Bryce Krispie Treats: Cool so no %s. The FT-punt guys all get crazy boosts, particularly DeAndre Jordan. Same for Drummond, Whiteside. Makes Kemba Walker better since his FG% is bad. Tony Wroten still hurts TO but is usable in that format taking out the %s.

  9. kai says:

espn finally decided to update their website
i only played one keeper league there because we liked the IR spot…to be honest, they have rankings way closer to the list here. but there are still some wacky rankings from them too

    parsons 29
    faried 37
dwight 44 ahead of deandre 46
jarrett jack 66 ahead of hill and rubio (70s) and payton (99)
    david lee 82
    mccollum 85
    jr smith 91
    ariza 91

    so, yeah.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@kai: Yeah it’s funny, Yahoo and ESPN ranks both seem to launch with weird ranks that then get closer to ours… THEY STEALING!

Wow on Dwight… Parsons is just way too risky there. Wow on Payton. And it’s crazy both big boys rank david lee top 100. I don’t have him top 200! Although thinking he might make it in my next update…

  10. Jason says:

    Need some quick advice

My worst players: McCollum, mules turner, dieng, and Wes Matthews

    Waiver: Stanley Johnson and lauvergne

Stanley has been lighting up the Stat sheet..should I maybe drop McCollum or anyone else and snag him (or lauvergne)? Thanks!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jason: Well starting with Lauvergne, nah. Johnson is really really close. Wish he had a more definable role. He/McCollum/Matthews are in a similar range.. Eesh kinda feeling Johnson to be honest… I’ll have to update my ranks to reflect that. Any time!

  11. Michael says:
    (link)

What do you guys think of Doug Mcdermont this year? he looks good!!!pre season

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Michael: Yeah very pre-season-y and tough to find minutes, I don’t think he’s a great SF fit. Stuck as a tweener

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Michael: I agree with JB but it does look like he’s running away with the job until Dunleavy returns. Starting forwards of Dougie and Mirotic is an absolute sieve on defense though.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Michael: @Slim: Maybe they try it, and quickly go back to Snell for defense… It’s certainly no long-term lock

    What’s up guys?
Just wondering if this league will ever have any open spots…I’ve never done a dynasty and it seems like it’d be fun. Also really good competition with you guys in it.

You guys helped me a lot in preparation for my draft in Slim’s league, so just wanted to say thanks!

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@CTMN: We filled a couple this year, I’m sure there will be more next year. 1st dibs always goes to the overall RCL winner. After that it’s kind of up in the air.

      • Kevin says:

@CTMN: @Slim: @Kevin: @CTMN: Cool yeah we’ve filled it with RCL winner, a few readers that have been around for years, and a couple of the new writers. You missed it on the surprise announcement post too! Given it was wayyyyy early for EST haha

    • Michael says:
      (link)

You could always start your own dynasty league and fill it with razzball commenters/readers who would be committed. I would be down. Anyone else interested?

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@CTMN: @Michael: Yeah man open up another Razz dynasty! If you guys need help filling spots I will help with twitter and in an article or somethin!

@DK: I recommend as deep as you can get it. If you can manage to replicate the REL settings I say go for that.

            • CTMN says:
              (link)

@Slim: Yeah I was thinking that, I just wasn’t sure I could do such a long draft lol that type of auction draft takes so long with so many spots. But definitely makes sense for that kind of league.

              • Slim

                Slim says:
                (link)

@CTMN: I shit you not… the 1st draft took upwards of 5-6 hours.

                  (link)

@Slim: Wow I don’t know if I can do that type if thing…might have to settle for less teams/spots or snake draft.

    JB –

I my 12 team H2H keeper league, as of now (some trade offers have been floated). I’ve got Curry, Paul, Hassan, Paul George as my current keepers.

My first pick is in the 5th round, 55th pick overall. My question is, this..I am assuming that I will miss out on Towns, but how early is too early to take Myles Turner for my “prospect”. My team is pretty geared towards “win now”. This league has a tendency to jump on the rooks real early, but my targets are Turner, Stan Johnson, Porzingis. I want to get at least one of those 3.

Where would you target them on a definite contender type core?

    Thanks, bro!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@OldMilwaukeePounders: I lovvvvvve Turner but damn this mahinmi thing and full-fledged George at the 4 is starting to sour me a little. Obviously depends on who is out there, but if you’re in win-now mode I imagine a few more established guys would be avail. If he falls to your 6th I would be happy there.

      Any time!

  14. Dante Green says:
    (link)

What’s good man! Been awhile since I last visited Razzball, and it feels good to finally write a comment again! So we drafted the other day, and unfortunately the fantasy gods decided to give me the 11th pick. Here’s how my draft went:

    (11) Damian Lillard
    (14) Rudy Gobert
    (35) Andrew Wiggins
    (38) Derrick Favors
    (59) Victor Oladipo
    (62) Trevor Ariza
    (83) DeMarre Carroll
    (86) Gorgui Dieng
    (107) Terrence Jones
    (110) Darren Collison
    (131) Avery Bradley
    (134) Aaron Gordon
    (155) Marcus Smart

My first four picks were Lillard, Gobert, Wiggins and Favors. The Lillard pick was a no-brainer but the Gobert pick was a tough one. Took me a minute before I decided to draft him, still had guys like Millsap and Butler available on the list but in the end I chose Gobert.. My 3rd pick was Wiggins. I know alot of guys would’ve still gone for a safer pick here but at (35) I think Wiggins is a good gamble. I mean in the mid 30s we’ve got Love Aldridge and Bosh in our razzball rankings and I’d still pick Wiggins over them. The 4th pick I’m not so sure tho… I was looking for a PF, and Favors was the best available out there.

Next picks were Oladipo, Ariza, and Carroll. I was looking for SG/SF who could help my team win STL and 3PM so I went for these guys.

Landing Dieng and TJones in the 8th and 9th rounds I believe was a steal, don’t you think? I love both of these picks.

The last four were Colly, ABradley, AGordon and Smart. I just went for the better guys still available on the draft board.

Your thoughts on my picks man? Looking at my team I kinda feel like I’m gonna have to punt AST and TO. But I think I can win these cats: STL/3PM/BLK/PTS. I’m not planning on winning every cat but I also don’t wanna punt too hard on a few. What do you think man, do I have to make a trade or nah?

I’m excited to hear from you guys! Much love for razzball nation!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Dante Green: Yo what’s good Dante?! Damn but Lillard/Gobert is a great start! And yeah Wiggins is sick. Love that start! Yup Dieng and Jones are solid where you got them. Gordon and Colly offer some great upside late.

Yeah I might gone PG at 62 over Ariza, but a solid team.

Much love man, good to see ya as always!

      • Dante Green says:

@JB Gilpin: Yeaa, shoulda gone for a PG i

      • Dante Green says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Yeaa, shoulda gone for a PG instead! You think my FG and FT can hold up? I’m punting neither… Anyway thanks man, always a pleasure to hear what you’re going to say!

@Jeremy: Haha yeah I did. All $15 of my remaining money since I ended up with 5 $1 guys. I was fine with it given my keepers are mostly starters. He’s certainly an upside stash, not someone to be crazy for in just this season haha

Finally got done with one of my league draft. Position 10 of 14. What do you think JB? I think I am OK with it. Not great, but decent. Points seems low. FT is bad too. The rest are quite balanced.

    10. Damian Lillard (Por – PG)
    19. Rudy Gobert (Uta – C)
    38. Derrick Favors (Uta – PF,C)
    47. Goran Dragic (Mia – PG,SG)
    66. Elfrid Payton (Orl – PG)
    75. Chandler Parsons (Dal – SF,PF)
    94. Terrence Jones (Hou – SF,PF)
    103. Joe Johnson (Bkn – SG,SF)
    122 . Jordan Clarkson (LAL – PG,SG)
    131. P.J. Tucker (Pho – SG,SF)
    150 . Myles Turner (Ind – C)
    159 . Mo Williams (Cle – PG,SG)
    178 . Dennis Schroder (Atl – PG)

@DK: Another Lillard Gobert combo, sick! Awesome start. Love the PG again in picks 4 and 5. Yeah FT% isn’t great, but still winnable. Pts are def low with the Jazz twin towers, but streaming players for some added Pts/3s would have you right there

      • DK says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Always appreciate your very swift response. So proud to be part of this community.

I was listening to your podcast, I was wonder if I should drop Schroder for a player like WCS. I got feedback from some analysis that my boards/block need to be stronger.

@DK: Any time! Glad for all your awesome commenters!

Yeah Slim seems to be souring on Schroder, I’m still in a holding pattern. YEah I think I would go with the little more risk of WCS for this roster too

@JB Gilpin: Hey JB & Slim, was just listening to your Oct 13 pod. Thanks for reviewing my team! Good to hear solid feedback about it! Excited for the season to start. I have 3 more drafts. My main league, REL and the most exciting, Razzball Commenters Dyntasy!

Hey jb, i just did my RCL draft, can i get my team reviewed on the next podcast? i love listening to that during work! Definitely very helpful. Got the 4th pick of 12.

1.) Kevin durant. Not much to say here. Just the standard pick after the top 3 guy were gone. Just need to stay healthy.

2.) Marc gasol. i kinda regretted this since bledsoe was still on board, but most big men were gone already and bledsoe, teague, and lowry were still there so took a gamble, didn’t want to miss a strong center.

3.) Jeff Teague. Lowry went right before which was a good thing because i would’ve gotten a headache from debating who to pick xd.

4.) Andrew Wiggins. Definiely was my favorite pick. Still can’t believe i got him at 45th in a razzball draft haha. Him and kd combined should win me ft% and points on most weeks.

5.) Elfrid Payton. The best pgs left at this point are IT3 and him. At this point, i know i have to punt blocks and i know i have to try to win steals and assists. Kd and wiggins should offset his fts, plus they said he worked on his shooting during summer. Have high hopes on this kid!

6.) Terrence jones. 69th pick for T jones. Not much to argue. Please stay healthy.

7.) Markieff Morris. Decide it’s time to take a risk. If he stays on the suns. This is definitely a steal. Just want to increase my Fg% and get some steals and rebs.

8.) Jarrett Jack. I have him ranked around 90, and got him 93rd. Increase some more assists and i can take on some more TOs after my last 2 big men picks.

9.) Myles Turner. JB you better not be lying. You said hes gonna be a top 100 player, I got him 100th. Guess ill try to win some blocks on some weeks against the weaker bigs.

10.) Otto Potter. I personally just think he’s gonna be a breakout candidate. He’s one of my favorite sleepers.

11.) Emmanuel Mudiay. At 124, i just don’t see a higher upside guy. Slim’s 4/4/4 playoffs got me feeling like he will be better by the end of the year. Can’t ask more anything more for a 4th pg.

12.) Loul Deng, Boring! i know. But 141??! 141 for a guy who’s gonna play 30 mins and has been consistent. Even though he’s been falling off each year, hes still consistent.

13.) Marcus Morris. Try to get some 3.

I have a question, should i drop him for bogut, harrison barnes, crowford, or jae crowder? i still think morris has the biggest upside. And i reunited the twins to keep Markieff happy XD

Thank you! hope to hear this on Tuesday.

@Jeremy Chung: Yeah that Bledsoe pass I think would be my major note, but we’ll review further on the Pod!

      • Jeremy says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:

Instead of Marc and teague, I would’ve gotten Bledsoe and Whiteside.

Looking at that I’m glad I went marc instead because I’m not sold on whiteside playing just 28 mins a game. Yea the blocks are nice but marc gives me out of position assists and keep my ft% very high. Bledsoe is slightly better than teague but Teague is going to give me more 3s and steals with less TOs, which fits with the rest of my team also. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on pod!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Jeremy: Well I think some matchups will dictate more run for Whiteside. Looking at it in tandems, yeah that is pretty close. We’ll chat it on the Pod!

            @JB Gilpin:

Thank you for reviewing my team haha glad slim liked my mudiay pick.
Should I trade markieff for IT3? I would gain about 2 assists a game and some 3s for a noticeable decrease in my fg% and probably lose some blocks and steals too. Thank you

              @Jeremy: Hah yeah he did!

Usually i would be all for IT2/3 but yeah I think Markieff fits a tad better, I would need a little more.

              Any time!
