It’s draft week!  And big thanks to the guys at Yahoo for inviting us back to the Yahoo Friends & Family League, especially after a rough inaugural season.  Damn the weekly lock!  We hit a couple pieces of news, recap our JB vs. Slim RCL League, then draft our F&F line-up trying to avoid any and all injuries.  Rubio killed us last year!  As did a late draft slot…  Luckily Slim’s awful luck at getting 11th or 12th in randomized draft order didn’t carry over to this one…  Here’s the latest edition of the Razzball Hoops Pod:

@Adam: Yeah man! It was tough, in standard leagues woulda gone Bron like the RCL last night, but with weekly lock, he’s gonna be such a headache

      • Adam

        Adam says:

@JB Gilpin: Being the clear #1 option on OKC is going to do wonders for his value this year. It’s just a PG centric offense. If he can keep the TOs under control, I think he can live up to my prediction.

C.J. McCollum went 57th? Korver went 43rd? You guys will dominate this league lol

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@CTMN: Hah yeah there were some odd ones! We liked a lot of our values even though we had a few taken, but damn PG didn’t get crushed like in RCL leagues!

      • CTMN says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Getting Myles Turner at 135 must have had you drooling LOL

        • Slim

          Slim says:
          (link)

@CTMN: Yeah that was a good one. I was a little saddened that Porzingis didn’t make it back around but it was so late that it was certainly understandable.

A few odd ones to me… Team Durant goes Drummond, ok, but then Howard too so team Durant is a punt FT team, oh and Mudiay.

Wiggins was great value but he followed it up with DeRozan, plus he already had Harden and his only PG was Kyrie. Throw in Aldridge, then Wade, and Jrue and he’s punting blocks with very little depth at PG and extreme injury risk.

Team LeBron went Whiteside but then didn’t add another shot blocker until Bogut at 147. That’s a lot of faith in Whiteside.

Team Lillard went Millsap, solid, then DeAndre? Pretty rough start to both percents.

The turn went Ibaka, Klay, Bosh, Korver?! for 3s?, then got his PGs of Lawson, Rose. Scary…

Team CP3 had a real nice start. Paul, Noel, Vuc, Batum, Ellis, but then went with Kobe, and Rondo later. Yuck.

@CTMN: @Slim: Hah yeah felt aweeeeesome.

Yeah the Korver one stood out to me, wayyyyy too early. Hah yeah the Rondo one was Funston, remember he said he hated himself haha

In the fourth round you passed on Wiggins with the 50th pick, i thought you had him 21 on projections, hahah what gives!!?

p.s. also would I be crazy to take M turner at 100, Im not sure if he will last into the 120’s
(its a weekly lock, so i can stash on bench until he starts getting good minutes)

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@james: Well a few things, mainly that I’m not a genocidal dictator and it’s a co-managed team with Slim! He doesn’t agree with everything I rank haha. Also we needed one more blocks source. In my first RCL I got him 23 after Harden and Ibaka – we didn’t have a blocks source like Ibaka.

Nope, I love Turner, would be a solid pick! And what we’re doing with Turner too. Another 5 blocks tonight!

I have chandler smart lopez out of FG in my league…

any of them worth getting for okafor or parker in my team… am quite short on 3’s and steals…

    Please help out!!

10 team ROTO is the format!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@TheJohn: Sure, yeah I’d get either of Chandler or Lopez for Okafor to help in FT%/BLK/ less TO. Parker is Tony or Jabari? Both with Smart are all really close, I might go upside of Smart for either too. Hope that helps!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Backyard BOOGIE: Hah, well team 1 looks solid, maybe light on blocks but you got some crazy early value picks with Dragic and Wiggins. To looks to be an all out punt as well, but I’m cool with that. I don’t think i’s worth trying to fix in trades though th TO, but might look for blocks help, maybe move like Kemba since your AST is solid.

2 – damn Durant and Kawhi?! I think you got pretty good AST for waiting on PG, but still a smidge light there, yeah WCS will be needed for blocks, totally fine with him over Henson a little more upside. Oh missed Favors, jesus this team is staked! Draft sober more often haha!

      • Backyard BOOGIE says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Thanks for the input I’ve been following y’all for the last 3 seasons straight up my go to site/podcast for fantasy advice.

Team 1 -Who should I target with Kemba? Noah, Gortat, Al jeff? Rolo? OR just pick up Biyombo, Cappella, Steven Adams, or Asik when he’s back?

Team 2 – The funny thing is I got kawhi in the third round lol I was debating between him and millsap (can you believe that?) but people kept talking about kawhi and how much they wanted him in the chat so for the sake of thrash talk I picked him up even though I was leaning on paul.
(side note – someone in this league drafted melo before lillard, john wall, LBJ (went 10th), klay, and paul george so you can get the idea of the way people drafted)

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Backyard BOOGIE: Awesome man, means a ton!

1 – I do like adding Capela, might even over Sullinger, I know he had a good last preseason game there… I don’t think those guys are upside-y enough for Kemba, what about for Towns?

2 – Damnnnnnn, and millsap was there?! Crazy! Wow people going for sportscenter appearances and not fantasy titles!

          • Backyard BOOGIE says:
            (link)

            @JB Gilpin:
            1. Yeah I think Towns is really valued by his owner right now but hey I’ll throw the offer out there and see if he bites it can’t hurt me haha I’ll go ahead and roll with your advice and pick up Capela.

            2. Yeah and we’re in LA so kobe was taken early in the 5th round over a bunch of quality players lol all in all I’m glad its the big money league.

Thanks for the pointers JB i’m gonna keep tuning in all season.

    Hey JB and Slim,

    H2h 20er FG%/FT%/3PTM/3PT%/PTS/OREB/REB/AST/ST/BLK/TO/DD/TD

Team was passed to me. Here’s the team:

    Eric Bledsoe
    Andrew Wiggins
    Jordan Clarkson
    LeBron James
    Terrence Jones
    John Henson
    Myles Turner
    Omer Asik
    Alec Burks
    Zach LaVine
    Isaiah Canaan
    Clint Capela
    Justin Anderson
    Dwight Powell

Well, by the looks of it I think I’m short with 3s. Once I got the team just 15minutes from this writing, I traded LeBron to Harden or Kevin Durant. I think, I can benefit more from either of those players rather than I have LeBron with me. Any thoughts?

Yup, it’s a DEEP DEEP BLUE LEAGUE.

    @[email protected] Cheers!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Kris: Whoa 13 cat, and 20 teams! Nice! Yeah 3s is low, would love getting Harden or Durant, hope they get to you. BLK is decent but maybe a tad low, def need the bottom of your roster to help there. Categories seem to help big men, I might explore trying to get one more big that boards and can hit a trey, ala Bosh or Love or something. Good luck this yr!

      • Kris says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:

Bosh for Myles Turner? You think it will hurt me?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Kris: Holy crap! Yeah even though he’s a little older, gimme Bosh. Might be losing BLK a lot, but so much more value

  7. MAC says:
    (link)

RAZZUP BRAHS?!!! razzup slim with the drummond draymond combo as ur 11th pick? thought u had millsap and gobert in the turn there. hehe

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@MAC: Yeah you and CTMN played a big role in that with all the talk of punting FT% at the turn we had throughout the offseason. In my other 2 RCLs I went Wall/Millsap and then Lillard/Gobert so I already had a piece of those 2 and I figured I’d go with the bigger risk/reward considering the accepted top 10 were gone. I feel like I hit the lottery when DeAndre fell to 35 and I’m happy with Dragic as my PG1 considering I already had a decent start to assists from Draymond (which btw playoff schedule vs ATL played into a bit for me). I was snake bitten by the PG run pretty bad but I like Mudiay with the build and I’m hoping for some more out of position assists from Parsons, along with a rise in scoring. I do wish FG% was better but I think I did ok with keeping my TOs down, I know I know… Mudiay, but those are 2 really important cats for me considering the FT punt.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@MAC: @Slim: Yeah the PG run was crazy yet again, I had to piece my AST together with some old bad vets like Wade, JJ, Jack, etc haha. If I stay pretty healthy though, I think I put together a decent squad

        • MAC says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: yeah! as ive been saying, in a h2h 9 cat league, punting 1 cat is a must. punting that 1 cat inorder to be elite in 2-3 cats and being above average in another 2-3 cats is worth it. and the most obvious punting strategy is ft with drumm and deandre. the way they anchor reb blk fg as well as having good stl TO is awesome. bigs would get upgraded in this build, but the guards you pick will basically determine the quality of your team. punt ft teams are usually strong in reb blk and FG. thats why the cats you would target are pts asst stl 3pt and hopefully effiecient in TO. as most would think drumm and DJ are the best building blocks in a punt ft team, for me steph curry is the best. thats why in a punt ft team, ATLEAST i load up on 3 PG in the first 6 rounds.

        • MAC says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: basically u got mid to late picks in your leagues slim. not as lucky as i am getting both num 1 picks in both of my leagues this year. hehe.
looking at your first picks, its a double punt of FT and PTS. with drumm dray deandre as your top 3 picks. the triple Ds!!! or DRs!!! drum dray dre! ha!

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@MAC: But then again you aren’t “punting” but you’re behind in Pts, Ast, and STL that you leave on the table. There’s always opportunity cost to every scenario. Although yeah Curry would fix that ha.

            • MAC says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: getting 1 of drummond or deandre lets u stock up on PGs and WINGS early. so in the first 6 rounds, getting 3 PG 1 WING, with drummond and another big, would still let you be strong in bigman cats.

              • JB Gilpin

                JB Gilpin says:
                (link)

@MAC: Oh for sure, but another pitfall of punting is the struggle in snake drafts. In auction, I’m all for it. But someone reaching for Drummo or DeAndre and you get screwed.

  8. MAC says:
    (link)

yo RAZZMAN, whats with our league, i cant put my players that are injured in IL. i had to double check if u edited the settings but still the same.

    • MAC says:
      (link)

@MAC: i think i got it, INJ is different from Out. u can just put INJ into IL spot. question, so if the player in the IL is no longer injured, he can still stay there right? then if u already want to put him in an active line up, u have to drop someone from the active lineup. right? left? middle?

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@MAC: Yeah they had everyone as “injured” for a while, but I think they’re only leaving injured on guys with long term issues, as they should. Yup a guy can stay there on IL, you can still make line-up moves, but you’re blocked from making add drops. But yeah once you want to play that person on IL, you’d have to drop someone or put someone else on IL

        • MAC says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: Got it! tnx! that should be better, IL should definitely for long term injuries. not on a game to game basis.

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@MAC: Totally agree, but it does still remain arbitrary, I wish NBA had DL rules to make it clearer, and I bet a lot of team would like it to add roster spots. Maybe it’ll happen if they flesh out D-League affiliates for every team like the MInor Leagues

            • MAC says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: yeah, thats why in our league with my friends, we still went with the old settings without the IL.

              • JB Gilpin

                JB Gilpin says:
                (link)

@MAC: Yup kinda wish Yahoo didn’t default it this yr…

  9. TheMuppetManiac says:

I just finished my keeper draft. 5 keepers, 12 team, h2h, 9cat (DD no TO)

My keepers were Curry, Lowry, Gobert, Pau and Tobias Harris.

Pick 1. Al Jefferson (Injury risk, but best big available, wanted a DD guy)
    Pick 2. Danilo Gallinari
    Pick 3. Terrence Jones
    Pick 4. Jordan Clarkson
    Pick 5. Kristaps Porzingas
    Pick 6. Darren Collison
    Pick 7. Aaron Gordon
    Pick 8. Marcus Morris

I’m pretty happy with my team. I don’t love having Big Al. I wanted Towns, but he went two picks before me. But I think I have a pretty solid team. I’m hoping Kristaps can come through for me.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@TheMuppetManiac: Great core to start with! Yup Al gets a boost in that league, solid pick. I’m still a little worried about Kristaps minutes out of the gate, but yeah I like your squad a lot!

  10. Bapty says:
    (link)

Any input on possible improvements to this team. I got really lucky with some trades offered to me including Pau Gasol for Reggie Jackson and LaMarcus Aldridge for Nikola Mitotic!!!!

    10 Team 9 Cat H2H – 15 roster spots 12 active
    I am punting FG%

    Kemba Walker
    James Harden
    Ricky Rubio
    Gordon Hayward
    Paul Milsap
    Chris Bosh
    Pau Gasol
    LaMarcus Aldrige
    Nicola Batum
    Danillo Gallanari
    J.J. Reddick
    KCP
    Jordan Clarkson
    Myles Turner
    Harrison Barnes

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Bapty: Whoa awesome! Someone is drinking the Mirotic koolaid offering that! Love those deals. And while I see you’re punting FG%, I still think big weeks from Pau and Aldridge you could surprise there. If Rubio stays healthy you’ll be fine in dimes, but a lot rides on him. BLK is about the only thing I see, which will be fine if Turner plays enough out of the gate, overall its awesome!

What’s up Slim and JB! I’m the guy in a 10 team 8 cat keeper league with Paul George for $4 and Davis for 96. With Covington getting hurt, my team is low on threes. Is Otto Porter enough to shoulder the loss, or should I pick someone up? Any targets for me on the trade market as well? Thanks

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Sam celtics fan: What’s good man?! Oh yeah, I remember that PG deal, nice! Still awaiting MRI results, so waiting that out first. Depends on who people are willing to trade, seeing Wesley Matthews play already is very encouraging, although he’ll be on a minutes limit for a while

  12. Mark says:
    (link)

Hey jb can you check out my team and see what I’m lacking in:

    9 cat h2h. 12 ppl. I had the 9th pick
    1) lillard
    2) millsap
    3) Hayward
    4) favors
    5) Payton
    6) Terrence jones
    7) towns
    8) dieng
    9) Jarrett jack
    10) collison
    11) Myles turner
    12) Jeremy Lin
    13) Marcus Morris

Do I need to make any changes or grab ppl off the waiver for week 1? Btw Nate Robinson is still on waiver. Would u rather have him or Lin?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Mark: Ohhhh that’s a good one. I’ll lean Lin since he could stick all year, but close. AST lok solid, I think FG% is the big worry on this squad, a lot of shooters early. I’m big on Towns, but BLK might be average, at least until we see Turner get unleashed. Looks good man!

@Nicksk: NIce work, got solid dimes and low TO! Love it. Rebounding should be OK, blocks look a tad light. FG% looks incredible. FT% good too. Curry is obviously elite, I worry your scoring might be a little light though. A boarder/scorer would help a ton, but overall looks good!

Hey JB how come it says Kobe is out but he’s still not eligible for the IL spot in Yahoo?

    • Stanley says:
      (link)

@Stanley: same for Chandler Parsons too even though he is still out and most likely isn’t going to play in the opener …how does the IL work then ??

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Stanley: Yeah so Yahoo had everyone listed as “Injured” until a few days ago when most players went to “Out”. I think they’re trying to make only long-term injuries count as “injured”. i.e. Nurkic is still “Injured” as is MKG. So I think it’s only for long-term injuries

Razzup JB & Slim. Had my auction draft in 14er H2H 9 cat (afg% instead of fg%) yesterday and as discussed previously went in with strategy of punting ast, ft & to. Was extremely tense as had to overpay slightly on my top 3 targets but was able to manipulate the end of the auction to get all my targets using up everyone of my available $100.
    G – DannyGreen $10, Duchess $4, JR $2, Tucker $1
    F – #Occupy $25, Ariza $7, Carroll $4, Covington $4
    C – Gobert $22, DeAndre $21
According to BBM this team had $140 value on our league settings last year but a whopping $350 on punt settings. Being able to snag Gobert for same $$$ as Drummond meant I could go after Ariza instead of TJones as less need of blocks. This move proved a master stroke when we got to the snake part of the draft where we draft 6 reserves. I wanted a couple of 3 point reasonable steals, low turnover guards and some blocks from F/C and some upside.
    Pick 154 MTurner
    Pick 155 Henson
    Pick 182 McLemore
    Pick 183 GGreen
    Pick 206 Capela
    Pick 207 Bjelica
Loving the value and balance that fell to me. A great draft where I was able to execute my strategy (crazy as it may be). Only downside was finding out about Covington’s injury afterwards. Gonna be a fun ride being involved in 5-4 and 6-3 match ups year long (hopefully on the right side of those scorelines).

    Thoughts?

@Dirk’s Digglers: haha also got a bit excited with the value … actually $260 on punt settings

@Dirk’s Digglers: Razzup man?! Yeah Covington’s injury hurts… Hah yeah I was about to say, your TO is looking great! I worry your FG% at times might not be strong enough though. I’m not a huge punter, so seeing a 3cat punt is certainly interesting, lemme know how it’s going through the year!

@JB Gilpin: no afg% is actually my best cat JB because afg advantages the 3 point shooters

@Dirk’s Digglers: F my bad, skimmed over that detail! I know the stat, but man you’re the only league that I can think of from the comments that uses it! Yeah Danny Green was awesome in afg. I dunno if Duchess can repeat, but he’ll be solid in the cat as well

Another Question- in my keeper league, should I drop Rondo for Collison? I need threes, and have elfrid and jabari, who both don’t shoot them. I’m middle of the pack in assists, but way behind in threes. Also, should I pick up Aaron Gordon or Kristaps when I put Covington in my injury spot. I would like another shot blocker along with KAT and the Brow, and I think Kristaps could get 1.5 a game with his length. He also chips in 1 three and 1 steal. Thanks

@Sam celtics fan: Well the second one is easier for me, I’m taking Gordon. I think he gets to all of those numbers as well, and then some. I trust his minutes more too. Rondo vs. Collison is usually collison for me, I think I’d take him knowing what you’re looking for too.

    46. Goran dragic
    51. Marcin Gortat
    70. Danilo Gallinari
    75. Monta Ellis
    94. Jordan Clarkson
    99. Robin Lopez (Don’t you just love this pick JB)
    118. Aaron Gordon

@Jeremy Chung: Razzup man?! Hah, Rolo ftw! At 99, that’s pretty solid though. Man this has some crazy good stats everywhere. %s are solid, no one is going to hurt TO except Harden, mayyyybe AST are a tad low, but barely. Ah, rebounding might be the other thing to address, but just barely. Both are grasping, I lovvvve this team! Ellis 75?!

    Hey guys,

Would you mind doing a review of my team on your podcast?

    10 teams H2H, 14 Rounds, 3 Bench spots and 1 IR

Points, Steals, Assists, Rebounds, Blocks, 3PM, FG%, FT%, DD, TD

    1. Anthony Davis
    2. Gordon Hayward
    3. Deandre Jordan
    4. Monta Ellis
    5. Victor Oladipo
    6. Al Jefferson
    7. Ricky Rubio
    8. Elfrid Payton
    9. Marcin Gortat
    10. Otto Porter Jr.
    11. Mario Hezonja
    12. Darren Collison
    13. Alec Burks
    14. Aaron Gordon

I feel like I started off alright but not gonna lie I was pretty distracted watching the Panthers game then I couldn’t get a break on PGs until Monta then just completely ended the draft on a bunch of gambles.

Hoping to convince a trade of Monta for Kyle Lowry, what do you guys think?

    Thanks,

@Josh Schmitt: Hey man! We’ve wrapped the podcast reviews, but very happy to comment review! Cool, so yeah in no TO you got some amazing G values. WHOA PANTHERS FAN?!?!?!? What a win. A few miscues, but other than one long run, D looked smothering. Love Gordon late, helps keep BLK solid next to DeAndre. Looks like 3s are a little light, but you can stream those. Very solid squad! And yeah I’d def take Lowry. Also I dunno if Hezonja is worth a roster spot in a 10er

@JB Gilpin: Sucks I missed the podcast reviews but I definitely appreciate the help here.

Yeah, born and raised in NC so Panthers fan, Hornets Fan (sadly) and much to your dislike a Duke fan.

But yeah that game was awesome, especially because between than one and the two before it they finally look like a complete team and its not just Cam Newton doing everything.

So Panthers aside, I ended up dropping Mario for Brandon Jennings to put in my IR and added Ilyasova to my lineup. Robert Covington, Nurkic, Jerian Grant, Montejunas, Maruc Smart are all still available do you see any of those guys as a better option?

@Josh Schmitt: Oh nice, yeah born in charlotte area (davidson), college UNCW, now live in Raleigh. NC through and through! But booooo, not a dookie! Although admittedly, my Chapel Hill fandom is dwindling due to more and more focus on fantasy and a disillusionment of NCAA in general with all the flooding of money and conference changes. And damn, yeah I didn’t think we were winning in SEA and looked great on Sunday. Oh yeah, fantasy NBA!

Cool love those moves. Wish Covington was IR elig, if he does get that designation, I’d get him for Ily, drop Jennings, and get a new streamer. Although I would do that now for Nurkic, better stash to me than Jennings. Hezonja I’d drop for someone. Actually, even with no IR I would get Covington and stash

Hey guys .. Love the pod cast. picking Wesley Matthews gave me hope with my team. I Think he will have a great year as well. Iam surprised you guys passed on Andrew Wiggns for Towns. So ive just had my draft 12 teams 9 cat Head-TO-Head.

Please give me a quick analysis would appreciate it greatly .

    Round 1 PICK 4 – Kevin Durant
    Round 2 – Paul Milsap
Round 3 – Nikola Vucevic — Default really wanted lowry he was taken . so this was no brainer.
Round 4- Andrew Wiggns — I know no pgs but just couldn’t pass on wiggins
    Round 5- Nicolas Batum
    Round 6- Brandon Knight
Round 7 -Jrue Holiday — god help me. but if he s healthy can be monster . just cant pass on the value.
    Round 8- Wesley Matthews
    Round 9- Roy Hibbert
    Round 10- Tony Parker
Round 11 – Julius Randle – I think he can be this year version of Draymond Green
    Round 12- Frank Kaminsky
    Round 13- Pattrick Patterson

You guys think I should drop any of these guys for PG – Cannon still available or Get Blocks With Henson or Bogut..

You guys are great thanks for all the help !!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@TheSix: Thanks so much! Yeah Matthews fit a need and with it a weekly league, we can afford the roster spot for him on the bench week 1 and see his minutes. And yeah, it was a team need and a co-manager decision, I probably would’ve drafted Wiggins.

Starting at the bottom question, I would get both Henson and Canaan for Kaminsky and Patterson. I dunno about that for Randle, he has a lot of holes in his game still 🙂

Overall, you definitely need more PG more than Canaan to help AST, Holiday is going to start so slow with his minutes limits. And adding Henson will help blocks. Scoring and %s and TO look fantastic, as well as FT% so you have a great start! Just need a few pickups to work!

        @JB Gilpin:

Thank you JB. i always value your input. i think I will drop ppat for Canaan and hold on to kaminsky to see how well the rookie does, he does have potential. What Trades should i target for, i want to trade for Reggie or IT2. Who would you give up ?

@TheSix: Cool, yeah I could see the stash upside for Kaminsky, hopefully he cracks good minutes early. Your TO rate is solid so perferably I would get Rjax, but IT2 will be cheaper. Parker + Matthews for IT2?
