do you think I should drop pj tucker for otto porter?

@hanns: Yup I would! You could even play Porter just week 1 and pick Tucker back up probably.

Just finished a 10 team standard mock:

    (In order)
    Ibaka
    Love
    Ellis
    Rose
    Vucevic
    Holiday
    Korver
    Stephenson
    Robin Lopez
    Martin
    Thomas
    Bogut
    Redick

Pretty good for the 10th pick? Didn’t really help cause I’m prepping for the first pick on Saturday…

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Fantasy Newb: Hah, well it’ll help you think about value later in the year!

Holiday – man awesome value there! Yeah I don’t really see any weaknesses…If Holiday had a slow week maybe AST, but that’s about it, nice mocking!

  4. Willie Stone says:

Dig the site, you guys do an excellent job for us Fantasy heads. Anyhow, just did our draft for a 9-cat h2h league. I would appreciate your opinion on my team.

    1. LeBron
    2. Kawhi
    3. Nowitzki
    4. J. Holiday
    5. D. Favors
    6. J. Teague
    7. W. Matthews
    8. Markieff
    9. IT2
    1o. D. Collison
    11. Sullinger
    12. Draymond G.
    13. Bogut

Didn’t mean to pick ‘Bron/Dirk/Kawhi since my 1st 3 picks were auto-drafted. I would’ve preferred Curry/Lowry/Millsap, since I won it all last year with the elite PG philosophy.

Anyhow, I want to trade my ‘Bron/Dirk for Curry/Millsap (the other team’s thinking about it) or for A. Davis/Lowry (haven’t proposed yet). Do you think I should pursue either trade or stand pat? Like I said, I prefer top-tier PGs over top-tier SF’s, but this year could be fun with latter, just not sure right now.

    Thanx in advance.

    • Willie Stone says:
      (link)

Also, it’s a 10-team league. I feel my BLK is average and my 3PT will be won depending on Sullinger/’Keiff’s contribution.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Willie Stone: Thanks for stoppin by man!

Totally with you on elite PG as a core, been preachin it since I started. I prefer that combo too, but even LeBron/Kawhi/Dirk autodraft is solid. Yeah I like both trades for ya, I think I prefer AD/Lowry. Just bc I love AD and I think fits your team better.

As it stands not, blocks are a tad light, but do like your PG depth you got mid-to-late. I like all your picks where you got em though! Oh boards might be light too. Why i would hope for the AD one!

  5. JD says:
    (link)

Here’s what my team looks like in a 14-man h2h league. Unfortunately, I was auto-drafted throughout the draft (long story). Can I get your opinion on which trades I can pursue to improve my team?

    Russ Westbrook
    Kawhi Leonard
    Kobe Bryant
    Chandler Parsons
    Ricky Rubio
    Markieff Morris
    Terrence Jones
    Bradley Beal
    Taj Gibson
    Draymond Green
Chris Copeland (Picked-up from the waivers)
Rudy Gobert (Picked-up from the waivers)
Shabaz Napier (Picked-up from the waivers)

    Thanks!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@JD: Ugh that sucks the autodraft gods got ya, I would try for some assists first and foremost. Really only RW/Rubio helping you there, Kobe chipping in too… But big men is what you need. You have tons of points and good players, but boards and blocks are behind. Kobe for… Drummond? Probably won’t happen but Drummo FT won’t hurt this team. Maybe even DeAndre Jordan, but I might try to get more than just him.

      • JD says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Thanks for your inputs JB. I’ll give DeAndre for Kobe a try. 😉

love your work, keep it up guys. what build would you suggest with Davis at 2 and with picks 27, 30, 55, 58 in an 8cat H2H? Thanks for your help!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@dudelsmack: Thanks so much man! 8cat, I would go PG very heavy. Hope MCW falls to 55 or 58 which he should. Might reach for Oladipo 30. Then 27 whichever good PG falls, hopefully Lawson/Lowry one of those 2. Any time!

  7. Karl says:
    (link)

I’m on a 14 team league h2h. What do you think of my team below:
    Cousins
    Lillard
    Klay
    Conley
    Favors
    RoLo
    Hibbert
    Draymond Green
    Chalmers
    Alec Burks
    Collison
    Terrence Jones
    Love ur show btw!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Karl: Love getting Colly late and two elite PG, wish you had one more. With Favors and Rolo, plus blocks from DrayDray and Tjones, I think I woulda gone PG over Hibbert. I know Chalmers is a PG, but I don’t really trust his role this year. Man, that’s a 14-teamer?! Pretty nasty lineup! All other stats actually look really good. Maybe try Hibbert for a… George Hill? A PG sorta in that range, maybe look at a few squads that might need Hibby’s blocks. Thanks for listenin man!

Ok big decision. Auction this weekend 14 team 9 cat H2H 6 keepers $100 budget. I currently have AD, Curry, Calderon, Valanciunas, T Jones and the Alphabet with $49 to spend. I think I could pick up two players ranked around 50 and two in the 90s with my $$$ and the available players and would end up with a well balanced team a bit light on steals. I possibly could pull of a trade for KD who comes at $44 price tag (probably giving up T Jones). I would then be picking up $1 players in the 100-130 range. If I pulled off this trade and can land the $1 players I think I could my team would be significantly stronger in 6 cats, 2 would be a wash and assists would take a slight dip but still be decent. This would put me in strong position for playoffs although high risk in that I would have no $$$ for auction so risk that the players I want would fall through my fingers and with my three studs an injury to either of them come play offs kills me. I’m also not in much of a position to strengthen my team through season as going to have a lot of role players who will have less trade value. I think I can cobble together a solid team above .500 for first half of season while KD out and 8 teams make play offs so should be alright there. Should I pull the trigger?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@AD needs help: Hahahahaha. AD + Curry with still half your budget in a 14 team league?! You don’t need any advice with that core, go ahead and get that trophy ready!

But seriously, if you can get KD ONLY giving up TJones, yeah I’m definitely doing that. Gives you the best 3 players. So AD/Curry/Calderon/Valanciunas/Giannis/KD plus $1-2 buys, yeah you’ll still have a monster team. Even if you start slow, yeah 8 teams making playoffs should be no issue at all.

      • AD needs help says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: what if I had to add Giannis to TJones to get KD … means I’ve going have to search for another $1 gem later in the auction??? would you do it JB?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@AD needs help: Yeah, I think I still would have to, but that sucks. Starting to be really really close but it’s two upside guys for fantasy’s best player when he’s back. I’ll lean to the latter.

          • AD needs help says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: ok it’s definitely going to take 2 players … I’m thinking TJones and Giannis are the most easily replaced out of the 4 but should I be looking at other combos (I like keeping Calderon for his assists that I’m unlikely to get in another $1 player and Valanciunas because a C with great upside)???

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@AD needs help: yeah I’d do Jones and Giannis, Giannis being more upside and Valanciunas more certain would want me to keep JVal.

  9. Quintero says:

Love the podcasts great works guys.

One minor suggestion(ignore me if u like):

It’s pretty hard to stick with those predictions during the week before tip-off, especially for the sleepers. I dropped Lance S. this time last year(for Jordan Hill…) so I know this is a tough process.

But gotta keep things in perspective too…I think bunch of us drafted Draymond, Dieng, etc. and now they are probably having the same value as, Harrison Barnes and Gobert…it’s hard to move them considering their potential upside but we really need you to inform us to move-on if you guys think so. Cust kayin’ man..maybe I’m just panic!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

      @Quintero: Always welcome to suggestions!

I understand your point, but lemme start with Lance. He has been an overvalued guy for me even when he broke out last year so I totally woulda endorsed that move.

With no games played yet, GSW could be lying and start Green, and even if Barnes does start he’s not gonna play big minutes. I of course will inform and make changes right away! I won’t be updating the rankings, they’re set so we can reflect on them in the future, but yeah if Barnes has a huge first 2 games and plays 34 minutes, I’ll of course say to drop Draymond for him. Dieng and Gobert should be playing the same minutes and Dieng has shown his upside at the end of last year, so he is much higher for me. Would probably take an injury to Kanter or Favors to make me have Gobert ahead of Dieng.

Just finished my real 10-team 9-cat H2H draft.

What do you think of my team? (9th pick)
    9. DeMarcus Cousins
    12. Serge Ibaka
    29. Paul Millsap
    32. Mike Conley
    49. Goran Dragic
    52. Kemba Walker
    69. Trevor Ariza
    72. Robin Lopez
    89. Terrence Jones
    92. Brandon Knight
    109. Reggie Jackson
    112. Patrick Beverley
    129. Draymond Green

Some context: 1 manager picked on name recognition (1st time drafter), another opted for punt FT%, and some others focused on specific stats (3PT, AST), which explains some of my values picks. 🙂

My main issue is that I’m relying on Dragic and Knight for my SG slot, and Ariza is my only real SF. That’s because I was almost always drafting for value (based on your rankings, heh) instead of position. If Draymond doesn’t pan out, I’m gonna be streaming SG/SF every week. Is there anyone I can trade for who can stabilize this, or do I need not worry about it?

Thanks for all the hard work, guys. Keep it up!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@decaf: Hah, value picks my ass, YOU CRUSHED IT!

Goran 49?!?!?! You went 3 PF/C early and still got elite PG. Your drafting on value was perfect man. With a team this good, no I’m not worrying about SF elig. Green’s easily your first out if we starts slow, so that’d be my contingency. You could probably never check your team and waltz into the playoffs!

      • decaf says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:

        Wow, thanks JB! 🙂

Yeah, the guys were avoiding the Suns backcourt like they were Felton. And the really weird (but good for me) thing was that the mini-run for the rest of the 2nd tier PGs started AFTER I grabbed Dragic and Walker (and Bledsoe went at 60!!)

Just in case I can still squeeze some more value, here’s some of the FA left:
Josh McRoberts, Elfrid Payton, Taj Gibson, Mario Chalmers, Kelly Olynyk, Mirza Teletovic, KJ McDaniels, Jameer Nelson, John Henson, Gorgui Dieng, Tony Wroten, Miles Plumlee, Rodney Stuckey.

Is anyone there better than Draymond right out of the gate? I know I can try for the good ‘ol 2-for-1 trade to open up a slot, but I feel that some of my good players aren’t valued as much YET by the rest of the league, otherwise they would have gone higher, hehe. Some of those FAs are Razzball favorites, but I don’t have enough slots! Haha.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

          @decaf: Wow, that’s some harsh avoidment! I don’t think avoidment is a word…

Well I do have Elfrid higher. Ya know, I think I would make that swap too. His PT may not be 100% assured like I thought it would be this point but I think he’ll be good.

It’s tough with all those sleeper guys out there though! Why we’ll be here all year to help out 🙂

          • decaf says:
            (link)

            @JB Gilpin:

            Pretty harsh indeed!

Whoa, I can’t believe I missed that Elfried is higher in the ranks. Probably because I already had 6 PGs and was just looking for an SF, heh.

I’ll add him once the waivers clear (league setting), don’t wanna lose the early waiver order too soon. Thanks for the advice, you guys are the best. 🙂

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@decaf: Yeah very understandable, you can always flip one too! I think having all that PG depth will put you in an awesome trade position. Thanks man, we try!

  11. Jon says:
    (link)

    Hey Guys,

Quick one here. Looking at picks 10 and 31 in 20-tm, 8-cat H2h. Hoping to come away with Oladipo at 31. As for 10, I’m hoping for Ibaka, Wall and Cousins. Your ranks would suggest them in that order but I was wondering if league size and 8-cat changes your mind at all. You still take the in that order (Ibaka, Wall, Cousins).

    Thanks!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jon: Great question. 8-cat, nah I’d take Wall first. And I think Cousins over Ibaka too. That’s both those guys main knocks is the TO. Wall, Cousins, Ibaka, and yeah would love Oladipo at 31 with no TO too. PG are scarcer too, so coming away with Wall and Oladipo would be huge int hat league!

      • Jon says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:

Yeah I’m sure you’re right – I’m only thinking of Ibaka because I am expecting a LOT of FT% punting in this league, which means a premium placed on big men as FG% will certainly be a category people are trying to target. That might make getting Ibaka’s blocks right off the bat very valuable since there will be a mad scramble for big men, leaving the blocks reservoir very thin. Hence, getting Ibaka.

Course, I could just punt blocks and zag while everyone else zigs. But I don’t really want to deliberately punt anything.

        Thanks!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Jon: Yeah well in 8 cat, it’s even more dangerous to FT punt. Of course Ibaka’s owner won’t be, but still, I think there’s blocker upside late a lot more so than AST upside. Any time man!

  12. Connor says:
    (link)

JB! You guys are the best, I’ve won my league the past two seasons thanks to you and Slim! Just finished the draft, 10 team 10 category league. I started with the 6th pick
    PG- Damian Lillard
    SG- James Harden
    SF- Giannis
    PF- Al Horford
    C- Vucevic
    G- Jrue Holiday
    F- Ryan Anderson
    Utility- Marcin Gortat
    Utility- Jose Calderon
    Utility- IT2
    Bench- MCW
    Bench- KJ Mcdaniels
    Bench- Spencer Hawes
I know I am probably low on blocks from my bigs, just didn’t want to punt FT %, Henson, Bogut, Stuckey, and Draymond Green, Asik, Boozer are available, would you make any switches?
I appreciate any and all feedback!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Connor: Awesome, thanks man, glad to help ya win the titles!

Pretty sick team. Wow, really sick team, MCW keeps being so overlooked! My ranks would suggest losing KJ for one of most of those guys, but ya know what? I’d say hold him and see what happens for the out of position blocks. I will caution that while your team is incredible, you’re probably losing TO most weeks, so if you’re crushing it by Thursday, you can filter out the TO guys. Any time man!

  13. Fantasy Newb says:
    (link)

I’ve been reading up a bit on punting… That’s only for category leagues right?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Fantasy Newb: Yup, can’t do it in roto. I mean you “can” but so a 9-cat roto, if you punt FT and get a 1 in a category, means to make up n the standings you have to be at 7s or 8s in all the others which is hard to do.

  14. Mike says:
    (link)

What would your strategy be for cbs roto? They don’t seperate positions, it’s just straight forwards and guards. I have the 9th pick and expecting to have to choose between Carmelo or Demarcus Cousins at center. Should I pass on both and just take all the point guards and power forwards I can?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Mike: I would still take best value, Cousins is awesome in roto minus TO, Melo might be above Cousins for me for the %s and lower TO. If you take a lot of PG, try to get some later that are lower in TO so you don’t get a worst or second worst there

  15. OldMilwaukeePounders says:
    (link)

JB, sweet show brotha. Just finished my auction draft last night. 11 team league, standard cats roto (no TOs), I’ve got some slight concerns, but based on my calculations of what is needed to reach the top 3 spots in each cat, my team isn’t too bad…I’d love some opinion from Team Razzball.

    PG – Wall
    SG – Hayward
    SF- Parker
    PF- Ibaka
    C – Horford
    G – Kemba
    F – Markieff Morris
    UTL – Holiday
    UTL – Nelson
    UTL – Giannis
    B- J. Hill
    B – Kevin Martin
    B – Jonas Valanciunas

There are some intriguing options left, Mason Plumlee, KCP, Hawes, McDaniels, Henson, Marshall, Burks, Wroten…Also, any thoughts on McCollum contributing for the Blazers?

    Thanks my man!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@OldMilwaukeePounders: Thanks for listenin man! Love Wall in that league with no TO. Man, love that team! All top 100 guys for me. Nelson might be a drop for someone… he is lower TO which helps him in 9cat. I think I’d grab Hawes for a few more boards. Lookin good this preseason, but yeah, it is preseason haha. McCollum – yeah I like him and think he’ll play, but not enough for an 11 teamer… Any time!

      • OldMilwaukeePounders says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:

My only reluctance is in dropping Nelson I may fall slightly behind in 3’s, and Assists. Hawes would chip in with 3’s though, so I can always make a play for a ThrAGNOF later in the season. I got in to a tight spot at the end of the auction where I poorly planned my final 2 spots. Wanted Hawes or Hill. I love Hill’s game when the minutes are there, but I had an unexpected moment of weakness when someone nominated the Luminescent One and had to go for him.

        • OldMilwaukeePounders says:
          (link)

          @OldMilwaukeePounders:

Someone snagged up Hawes already in the time I posted this…damn. Any other thoughts? Is your boy KCP going to take the big step forward?

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@OldMilwaukeePounders: Damn! Yeah I like Valanciunas still more than Hawes or Hill, so I think you did the right thing there.

I do like KCP, but not over Nelson… I really don’t see any big needs so maybe I just keep your roster, Mason Plumlee if BroLo misses the first few games is intriguing!

            • OldMilwaukeePounders says:
              (link)

              @JB Gilpin:

BroLo’s foot bones are made of balsa wood, so Plumlee is definitely on my radar. It is so hard for me to roster Duke players, I closed my eyes while bidding on Jabari. I want the Plumlee’s to fail so bad…it is really a dilemma for me to want them to succeed.

              • JB Gilpin

                JB Gilpin says:

@OldMilwaukeePounders: Oh for sure, i moved him way up in my ranks. Haha right there with you on the Dookies, surprising some guys that weren’t so big in college (well, minus Parker), thinking mainly the Plumlees, are getting so much run in the NBA.

    Drummond mid 4th
    Favors mid 6th

Thoughts on grabbing 2 PG with the first 2 picks (if they’re there) then PG/SG Rainbolidpo in the 3rd waiting till the 4th on a big. Say Drummond? Might be punting FT% tho eh?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Bye Felicia: Well Favors is improving and Drummo is usually pretty low volume, so if you get the right guys you could still fight in FT. Def would go PG with those guys though.

Hey JB. Did my draft last night with my friends and here’s my what my draft went like. I picked Westbrook over CP3 and Lillard over Millsap. Was hoping to get Millsap 3rd but he was picked 28th so I picked the other big. A lot of people were reaching hard which I didn’t expect. Example, Rose 16, J. Parker 40, Kobe 14.

Anyways. I got offered Al Jeff for Lillard. What do you think? I’m a bit thin on bigs and I’m starting to regret drafting MCW 7th round. Maybe could’ve held out till 8th round and went for another big. Also heard from one of my friends that MCW could be out 5-50 games..

    (5) Russell Westbrook (OKC – PG)
    (20) Damian Lillard (Por – PG)
    (29) Al Horford (Atl – PF,C)
    (44) Derrick Favors (Uta – PF,C)
    (53) Kemba Walker (Cha – PG)
    (68) Jonas Valanciunas (Tor – C)
    (77) Michael Carter-Williams (Phi – PG)
    (92) Kevin Martin (Min – SG,SF)
    (101) Giannis Antetokounmpo (Mil – SG,SF)
    (116) Draymond Green (GS – SF)

Also hows my team looking? Would love your input on what I need to build on.
Thanks as always! And keep up the hard work!

@m1chael: Yup well I woulda said MCW was an awesome value there before the news a comment below, and yeah lookin good. I personally would still CP3 over Westbrook, but not like they’re not close. Hah, wow, those reaches are crazy sauce.

Yeah I’d take big Al for lil’ LIll. Gives you unbelievable bigs. And still good PG. I honestly don’t see any major moves to make or things to build on past that… Maybe a bad week of Giannis/MCW/Westbrook will cost you TO here and there, but that’s about all the negativity I could throw on that team, really like it!

@DK: @m1chael: Yeah all this stuff about him missing 50 games/out til Christmas I kept saying was nut-so. It’s good there’s a date actually put on it oo, and I still think it’s a little BS given MCW is saying he’s ready now.

    1. Was offered Teague for d. Lee. Y or n given than both pgs and C’s are hard to come by
    2. Just saw the blurb saying amare was going to play 32 mins a game?? Is he actually worth owning after this news? Do you prefer him over say, marcus Morris? 16 man h2h 11 cat. Would either be dropping Wilson chandler or norris Cole.

    Here is my current team:
Pg – wall, collison, chalmers, Cole
    SG – tyreke
Sf – gay, wiggins, w. Chandler
    Pf – dirk, d. Lee
    C – mcgee, j. Hill

@Hamtime: Def a yay for me. I think I have Teague a couple higher in my ranks, and another PG def helps ya out.
      2. Hah, lemme look that up (just looked it up) Phil J – “Although his tender knees will require his playing time and his practice time to be carefully monitored, we hope he’ll be able to play four rotations of eight minutes per game.” i.e. – we hope he can do it but I know he can’t, haha. Nah I’m sticking with Marcus. Cole is close. Maybe I roll the dice on Amare to see what happens, I don’t think Cole has any upside.

    Ariza

@Fantasy Newb: First one – nah I wouldn’t give up AD for that. Dragic and Lawson are neck-and-neck but I don’t think Davis and CP3 are too close. I can see why you’d consider ti though needing some PG. 2nd one is really close… I might but, I might also try another offer replacing Varejao with their last or second to last PG.

@Chinzy: Hey man, thanks for checking us out!

Love the top 4. All great value. Deron is a little high for me, but don’t mind it, and glad you got great PG depth. Whoa, Taj 128?! Sheesh! Actually looking at it again, Deron is big for the 3s which you need, so I like that one more.

Really having trouble finding any holes. Maybe TO will be a tad high, but not bad at all. Nice team!

        @JB Gilpin:

        Thanks JB!

I was kicking myself in picking Dwill over Jrue, but I figured Dwill will give me a boost in 3s since Paul Pierce is out of the team.

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Chinzy: Yeah I woulda gone Jrue too, DWill is also got the risky label, but since you needed the 3s when it was all said and done it’s a good move!

    10 Team, 5 Keeper, Yahoo, H2h, 9 cat
    12 starters, 3 bench

Guards: Curry (k), Harden (k), Westbrook (k), Burke, Collison, Knight, Bradley
    Forwards: Parsons, Butler, DLee
Centers: Griffin (k), Horford (k), Gortat, Deing, Mozgov

Is this team as dominant as I think? I am super pumped with this squad. Not sure what the other 9 owners were doing – from rounds 7-12 I was picking guys in my 50-70 and they were taking 90+ rated guys. Weak in blocks and basically with have ALL the turnovers, but shit – I can deal with that.

Let me know if the 4 glasses of red wine are impairing my draft analysis.

Yeah this team is a monster.

The comments on another thread got too full.

Need to up my blocks and reb thru Monroe +1 possibly. Pau/Hill is out cos his team seems to have plenty of 3s. Another potential trade would be another team that has Farried, RoLo, Pekovic, Gibson and Sims. But he’s someone who prioritize FG and FT quite a bit.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@DK: Hah yeah that can happen 🙂

Well I wouldn’t touch Pek… Sims is out too since he doesn’t block at all. Monroe straight up for Taj, I’d be totally good with that. But Monroe’s had a big preseason… He should take it. Worth noting we won’t know how Monroe is looking until Pistons’ 3rd game (suspension from DUi/peeing on himself)

      • DK says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Monroe for Gibson huh? He might just take it. Let me try… but I definitely need more on rebounds as Monroe’s rebounds are huge. Gibson will solidify my blocks, but my rebounds will be quite low.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@DK: yeah it’s a drop but big blocks increase. Boards are also easier to pick up/stream than BLK. Still a very close trade though, Monroe has more overall upside IMO

          • DK says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: Well, I offered Monroe for Taj. Let’s see how he bites it. If that goes through, I would need a rebounder bad. Nothing really in waiver wire.

There’s K. O’Quinn, but not sure how’s it like in Magic. The rest are Jason Thompson, Marion, Bass, Koufos, Humpries… no one really good.

Your site is flooding with comments. With so many comments, this site would even be more fantastic with forum where we can easily exchange and pool discussions. @DK: It’s out of control these comments! Nah, it’s not so bad, Baseball gets so much worse on the Grey ones (he’s who started the site way back in yesteryear). Also comments get much easier to handle and organized in season. So new questions for me? Put em on my daily recap. Preseason is tough with updated posts and such.

We actually do have a Forum, but I don’t like it very much. Also, I don’t get notifications so I forget about it, here I know where all the comments are.

So, with Nash out for the season, will it boost Lin and Prices value much to you? I’m drafting tonight and I think Lin might be a great value guard pick now in the middle rounds.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Coen: I had been treating the Lakers as if they wouldn’t have Nash at all. So no, in my ranks I’m not boosting Lin any. Price… Eh he’s a journeyman just with two good preseason games… Still not a top 200 for me. Kobe having the ball in his hands so much will keep Lin from racking up big AST numbers, but I do think he’s a solid pick in the late 70s early 80s, where I have him (I think I was originally higher on him than most)

@Wayne: Gotcha, eh I dunno Porter is kinda a gamble, I might save my moves for now. They’re kinda close, but I do like Porter more.

Yeah I think your assists are way behind. Harden is awesome for out of position, Dragic is awesome, but then not much past that. I think you’re behind in blocks too, and a tiny bit in boards. I think if Wiggins starts really hot, I might sell high for a PG or big man.

  32. PORKFOOT says:

what’s with the M. Ellis comment? Mavs not having someone to give them 6 assists a game ? J. Nelson is a fine wine. I bet he gives people some of the best overall value of any later picks. I haven’t been drafting him in mock but every year I let him slip in drafts and he just constantly puts up good assist totals. I like Ellis in drafts and if Carlisle helped him up his fg% imagine what Nelson might do in his system.

So it’s my first year doing basketball fantasy. Here’s the team I drafted. Can you let me know where the weaknesses are. After Curry, Ibaka, Horford (Deng’s ok I think) there seems to be a big drop off. Could you recommend guys on this team I should look to trade and also which guys I should drop and work the waiver wire?

    PG Ricky Rubio, Min PG
SG Tim Hardaway Jr., NY SG
SF Giannis Antetokounmpo, Mil SF, SG
PF Serge Ibaka, OKC PF, C
C Al Horford, Atl C, PF

G Stephen Curry, GS PG, SG
    F/C Luol Deng, Mia SF
    F/C Corey Brewer, Min SF

      @Mike: Welcome to hoops man!

Love Curry/Rubio, but still wish you had one more impact PG. Jameer Nelson and Elfrid Payton are both I think are undervalued. And Collison. I don’t think Garnett is gonna do much for you, so if there’s anyone you like on the wire I’d drop KG. Boards look a little light too, and blocks a tad as well. Serge will be awesome, but wish you had a little more big man depth. If anyone come up on the wire, I’d get em right away!

  34. Lasandro says:
    (link)

    Heya boys

Well, the roto day is finally here. 14 cat, 8-teamer. I had the third overall pick and made a highly critized one with it (in order):

    Durant
    Ibaka
    Lawson
    Milsap
    Lowry
    Walker
    Rubio
    MCW
    Gortat
    Kieff
    Giannis
    J Butler
    R Jax

Yes, yes, obviously an abundance of assists and lower on pts, stls and %. I made an accidental pick (Kemba) and ended up just picking up the best available player, with the plan of trading one of my high assists guys for a, say, Al Jef. Thoughts @jb gilpin @slim?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Lasandro: Sweet! Yeah in roto, I’m a little lower on Durant, it’s a little risky. But could pay off huge.

Yeah love me dem dimes! Yeah boards are way down, def would try to get big Al. Or Big Vuc. ONe of those guys. Kemba might get Vucevic for ya! Also with all those PG, and when Durant is back, your TO are gonna probably be dead last. So keep an eye on those man 🙂

      I need some kimchee!

    • Lasandro says:
      (link)

@jb Gilpin: well in that case, do I drop either butler or r Jax for a scoring and boarding big off the wire? Tyson, Omer, Booz, dieng, taj amongst the available

I’ve got post pick depression. Was waiting for this draft for months and months and I’m regretting my choice. Hopefully he returns by December rather than the end of year. 50-60 games of him is still not bad.. I think. Sincerely, Sad Panda

      • Slim

        Slim says:
        (link)

@Lasandro: I’m stuck on the 14-cat, 8-teamer. And… 104 players owned. Basically the waiver wire is going to be full of very good players all along the way. I agree with all that about trading for another big. I wouldn’t be considering dropping Jimmy Butler yet. It’s Reggie vs Taj for me. Tough call. I don’t want to make it… Am I allowed to do that? I’d say go for the trade first, if it doesn’t happen and you think you would move Taj into your starting lineup then that’s the move I would make. If Pau or Noah goes down though Taj would become a must start guy in any size league.

        • Lasandro says:
          (link)

@Slim: thanks mate! Guess I’ll let both these candidates play a week or two then decide on who I want most. I still see taj gettin solid mins and usage. He did in preseason at least

              (link)

@JB Gilpin @slim: sorry, I mustve been drunk on that Vietnamese rice alcohol singing Andy’s praises like that. My gut is leaning towards using my waiver to try and pick up Oladipo (dont think I’ll be the only one unfortunately), then perhaps switch someone on my squad for Taj off the wire?

              • JB Gilpin

                JB Gilpin says:
                (link)

@Lasandro: Yeah I def think Oladipo is worth grabbing. I’d drop RJax for him, but dunno if I’d drop anyone for Taj yet. Everyone else on your squad I like more. That rice alcohol will get ya!

              • Lasandro says:
                (link)

@jb Gilpin: thanks bud! I’ve used a waiver to grab VO – will see if he lands with me. Meanwhile, do I just forget Oladipo and drop Jax for Asik, considering my needs? He’s lookin to have a stupid brds and blks season in NO. Plus my league seems to be super frigid re: trading for one of my pgs. Reckon you could give me examples of which bigs I should trade for, with each of my PGs. I tried lawson for big al but dude wasn’t interested

                • JB Gilpin

                  JB Gilpin says:
                  (link)

@Lasandro: Eesh I really want Oladipo, but yeah you need Asik. I’d grab Asik. Walker or Rubio for Derrick Favors? I’d ask for a big name for Lowry. Probably wouldn’t trade Lawson or MCW since their values are a little low with injury concerns.

          • Lasandro says:
            (link)

@Slim @JB Gilpin: Varejao, Burke and Oladipo have now been dropped into the FA pool? Shall I use a waiver for any of these? Oladipo is my man! Surely he wont miss that much time. Is someone like Andy a better fit on my team, need-wise? My gut says Oladipo, so that if I end up moving a top tier PG like Ty or Kyle for a quality big, I wont be losing too much

            • Lasandro says:
              (link)

@Slim: jimmy now out for 2-4 weeks.. Should I drop him and grab Oladipo, or hold? Already have KD of course, and waiting on MCW. Currently have no SG or SF eligible player bar Giannis 🙁

@jb Gilpin: sorry, tht question was meant for you too. But now there’s news that jimmy wants to play on Friday? So confused. Bottom line, I love VO so much more and wonder if I need him or if I ship kemba or Rubio for a scoring and boarding wing/big

I feel for Oladipo. This might be his year but not anymore. How’s Fournier for pickup?

    • DK says:
      (link)

@DK: Talking about injuries, since Nash is out now, Ronnie Price should get the backup minutes. Maybe 20-25 mins? He looked good in preseason. I wonder if he’s worth a pickup.

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@DK: ehhhh neither really excites me. Now means Ben Gordon HAS to play… Ugh. Fournier is more exciting than Price. Price is a journeyman, and it’s not D’antoni’s Lakers. And I’d been assuming Nash would not be playing most of the year for one reason or another. Will be a little slower team, but better team.

    my #9 & #16 picks for their #2 overall

    my #64 (6th round) for their 95 & 119 (8th & 10th round)

i like the top half of the deal getting AD or Curry puts me sig ahead than if I get Wall & Ibaka (i know westy won’t be there at 9 which would be idea w massive usage boost for 2 months) I’m just concerned about 2nd half of deal feel like i’m giving up a sure thing in early 6th to go hunting in waiver wire almost land…

@sam: So it’s two different trades right? The 2nd one I might do… First one… it’s close. Maybe try countering. Your 2nd for their n#9 and 3rd round?

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@sam: I’m not touching the 2nd trade. I think 7th and 10th would be much more reasonable. The 8th/10th being 2nd to last picks means it’s basically 9th and 11th… No! But I would take his #74 and #119.

The 1st is a close one but I would take it. I don’t believe Curry/AD + Waiver is anywhere close to Wall/Ibaka… or even Ibaka/Lillard if you have to go that route instead.

      • Slim

        Slim says:
        (link)

@Slim: I misread that. I would hold on both trades.

My counters would be your #9, #16 for his #2 AND #47.

        Your #64 for his #74 and #119.

        I think I did that math right…

        • Slim

          Slim says:
          (link)

@Slim: For the 1st I’d be willing to take up to his 1st and 5th rounders. Not his late 6th…

For the 2nd… would I take his 95 and 98 for 64? Nope!

Finally drafted tonight and I went with a lot of Razzball favorites, but I feel I might’ve gone overboard with the upside and should’ve gone with some safer options here and there. Anyway, let me know what you guys think!

    Weekly H2H, 12 Cat, 12 man, 3Gs, 3Fs, 2Cs, a Util, 3 bench.

    1 (2) Kevin Durant
    2 (23) Al Horford
    3 (25) Goran Dragic
    4 (47) Ricky Rubio
    5 (50) Nerlens Noel
    6 (71) Andrew Wiggins
    7 (74) Giannis Antetokounmpo
    8 (95) Draymond Green
    9 (98) Kevin Martin
    10 (119) Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
    11 (122) Taj Gibson
    12 (143) Steven Adams

I also picked up Terence Ross because I have an open spot due to Durant’s IR-eligibility. Jameer Nelson’s available on the wire and I’m of a mind to pick him up, but I don’t know ho to drop. Maybe KCP?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Coen: Love the aggressive KD pick! Yeah in weekly, I would have to get him 2 or 3 too, isn’t hurting your team eating up a bench spot.

Well I would drop Ross for Nelson. I think you need a little bit more for PG and Nelson fits perfect.Love the blocks boost players late too. Early on, until KD is back, you’re gonna struggle hard with points… But other than that, I like all your value nice draft!

      • Coen says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:

Thanks for the advice. Dropped Ross and picked up Nelson.

Yes, the struggle early on will be painful, but I’m hoping it will pay off in the end. First 8 get to the play-offs and I should be able to make that.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:

I have the first pick in a 12 team points league. 3 points for blocks/steals, 1.5 for assists, minus 2 for any type of foul, minus 1 for TOs. What should my strategy be? Who should I target?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jdrnym: 3s the standard 1 point? Some formats make 3ptm more which makes me go Curry. Wow minus 2 for fouls… I think I’m going Curry there, should have more volume in points to narrowly outscore Brow’s big plus in blocks.

      • Jdrnym says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: no points for threes specifically. 1 point per point and .5 for FG made

        • Slim

          Slim says:
          (link)

@Jdrnym: Can I assume 1.5 for boards too? It’s really close but I’m still taking the Brow. The extra 9ish points per game for blocks should make up for the extra couple of points from Curry (which should be less than 9).

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@Jdrnym: @Slim: Oh OK, usually points leagues award at least 1 for 3PTM, I’m to the Brow then

  40. TheMuppetManiac says:
    (link)

I just drafted in my keeper league. 12 team, H2H. You keep 5 and the draft starts at the 6th round.
I’m the reigning champ, so I had last pick.

    Steph Curry (keeper)
    LaMarcus Aldridge (keeper)
    Blake Griffin (keeper)
    Kyle Lowry (keeper)

Wesley Matthews (pick 72) I was amazed and ecstatic he fell to me
    Thaddeus Young (pick 73)
Jose Calderon (pick 96) I was hoping he would still be there
    Tobias Harris (pick 97)
    Spencer Hawes (pick 120)
    Jameer Nelson (pick 121)
Henry Sims (pick 144) I took him over Steve Adams, who went undrafted
    Rodney Stuckey (pick 145)

I like my team a lot. I just traded Blake for Al Jefferson, to help me out with blocks. Should I drop Sims for Adams? I have some really good FT% guys, so he might not hurt me as much.

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@TheMuppetManiac: Yeah I agree blocks are coming up a little short and I would go Adams for Sims. Sims is probably more reliable for minutes and probably out boards Adams with the extra minutes, but I think you’re ok there so Yes, I’d take the Adams upside. I like your trade a lot. I think it was a very good upgrade for you.

Thad at 73 was some really good value, and pretty much your only FT drain with Jefferson.

  42. Jon says:

How high would you up move Lin up in H2H 8-cat given Nash and now even Ronnie price injuries? Is 50 overall too high given PG depth in drafts?

    Thanks!

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Jon: We’ve got him at 81 and that was with expecting Nash to be a non-factor, the reason he isn’t higher is due to Kobe being the main facilitator of the offense and Lin has always been a high TO guy. With TOs out of the equation I could see a rank somewhere in the 60s. 15/7 feels completely reasonable in 34ish minutes.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:

@guidedbyvoices: First 3 for sure and I agree with Rubio/Parsons too. The three old guys are all on the downswing of their careers, I’m not too interested in them as keepers. JB, update from our earlier back and forth, Hawes and Draymond have been picked up and dropped in my 11 team, no TO ROTO league. I’m thinking of dropping Nelson for one of them. Does Hawes big preseason have you more confident in him?

I’m thinking that his boards, 3’s, and blocks are more than Jameer’s dimes and 3’s. Your thoughts?

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@OldMilwaukeePounders: I’d say Hawes v Nelson is razor thin. Completely need based. Jameer’s lack of steals plus Hawes with the blocks probably does push the needle ever so slightly in his favor. I’m still all in on Draymond and I think he’s well ahead of both. I think he’s going to be even better in Roto than H2H too. Just have to make up for his points. That’s it.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@OldMilwaukeePounders: @Slim: Totally agree, in Roto I’m getting Draymond, probably would in H2H too unless needed assists then I would Nelson, but yeah, gimme DrayDray

Thanks fellas, I went with Draymond here. Drafted my final league last evening. 12 teams, 14 roster spots, 4 keeper max. Any thoughts/suggestions? My early impression is that my PTS/treys are light.

          PG – Paul (k)
          SG – Curry (k)
          SF – The Greek Freak
          PF – Griffin (k)
          C – RoLo
          G – Lowry (k)
          F – Jordan Hill
          UT – Henson
          UT – Jameer Nelson
          UT – Dieng
          B – Stuckey
          B – Mason Plumlee
          B – KCP

Meeks, Napier, Gerald Green, Manu, Sims, Steve Adams, H Barnes, A Gordon, Porter Jr, Corey Brewer, MKG, Augustin, Lamb, Gobert all available and somewhat intriguing.

          Thanks in advance, homies.

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@OldMilwaukeePounders: Well starting from the bottom, nah I’m not making any pickups yet.

I think Pts are good! Blake+Curry is pretty big. I think 2 of Dieng and Henson and Plumlee have to work out for blocks to be good, but I think they will. Treys actually I think will be fine too. FT% could be an issue at points though, Plumlee/Dieng/Henson/Griffin all could bring it down. But that’s nit picking, very good looking team!

            • OldMilwaukeePounders says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: Thanks my man. Yes, FT% could be a slight bugaboo for this team, but I forgot to mention that it is a H2H team. As long as I can compete in all other cats, I’ll take a beating in FT% sometimes, but the tradeoff should be worth it. I think Dieng and Henson are being criminally underrated by other fantasy “experts.” I am ending up with them on most of my teams since I am both a dedicated Razzballa’ and not a moron.

This team rounded out better than I expected consider my first pick didn’t come until 74 due to trading picks to get Curry.

Great stuff as always JB & Slim…

Going into my 12-Team H2H Keeper draft tomorrow. Decided to pull the trigger on sending Larry Sanders, Terrance Ross and the #4 pick for Derrick Favors and the #9 pick. Going into the draft with the following roster:

    G – Kemba Walker
    G – Victor Oladipo (sigh)
    G – Reggie Jackson
    G/F – Nicolas Batum
    G/F – Kawhi Leonard
    G/F – DeMar DeRozan
    F/C – Andre Drummond
    F/C – Derrick Favors
    F/C – DeAndre Jordan
    F/C – Jared Sullinger

Can’t obviously list the entire draft pool, but it includes all the rookies (there value is always inflated) and a pretty deep veteran pool in comparison to most years (e.g., Wesley Matthews, Trevor Ariza, Darren Collison, Dwayne Wade, Patrick Beverley, etc). I know what positions I need to target veterans in filling out my roster, but was wondering if you or Slim could give me your thoughts on the top 15 rookies for a keeper-league? I traded down five spots cause I wasn’t going to be getting any of the “Big Three” rookies, but I have to at least draft one (league rules) and was wondering how you saw this rookie class shaking out.

    Happy Saturday!

I think those are all of the the ‘A’ prospects. But some aren’t going to help this year so you have to decide if that’s ok for you. I think that’s way more ‘A’ prospects than a normal draft.

      9.Randle
      10.McDermott
      11.Stauskas
12.Nurkic (Might be an ‘A’ prospect. I need to see more though.)
13.Jordan Adams(There’s a bunch of wings, Adams makes the list for steals upside.)
      14.Payne
      15.LaVine

I’m good with that list right this second. You notice who isn’t on this list? KJ McDaniels. I like him more for his role and immediate production as opposed to his long term potential.

So I drafted my team and it’s pretty weak compared to the others….I have the luxury of LeBron, but put him on the block and one offer I got was

LeBron, Duncan, Louis Williams for Bledsoe, Favors, Zach Randolph

This is an incredibly deep 12 team (we start like 15 guys), h2h most categories league, is this return good enough to move LeBron??

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Anthony: Hmm… I like the idea of Bledsoe/Favors but LeBron just costs more. Duncan is more or less considered equal to Favors, Sweet Low is still just a waiver guy. Randolph is probably ok with extra rebounding categories but I still think this ultimately comes up short. I would counter with the same thing but I would switch out Randolph for someone better.

And yes I would be looking to sell LeBron and Duncan while the selling is good.

@JB Gilpin: Only problem….I have absolutely zero need for blocks. I’ve got AD, Millsap, T-Jones, Henson, even Mason Plumlee has huge blks upside. Even David West went for like 0.8 per game last year. And my wings? Draymond and KJ. I might never lose blocks this year so I’m not sure how useful O’Quinn could be.

Hey Guys – just did a crazy 20-team, 8-cat H2H draft. 12 teams make playoffs. Let me know what you think? Missed a lotta guys I wanted and it was pretty stressful! Used the Razzie ranks, OF COURSE. I had pick #10.

    1 (10) – K. Durant
    2 (31) – M. Conley
    3 (50) – M. Ellis
    4 (71) – J. Lin
    5 (90) – T. Harris
    6 (111) – G. Dieng
    7 (130) – J. Nelson
    8 (151) – Mason Plumlee
    9 (170) – C. Copeland
    10 (191 ) – Marvin Williams
    11 (210) – Luis Scola
    12 (231) – Ed Davis
    13 (250) – C. Joseph
    14 (271) – A. Rivers
    15 (290) – P. Prigioni

What do you guys think? Looks like FG% and 3PM might be issues for me, blocks too, though I’m hoping to piece that together. There was so little at the end… kinda panicked on that last pick but NYK backcourt depth made me think it’s okay.

    Thanks guys!

@jon: 20 teamer, I like it! Yeah it’s tough with the bottom feeders, but I like your draft! Wow, 12 teams for the playoffs and still KD fell to 10?! Man, should be easy getting in and you’ve got him.

Yup FG% and blocks are what stick out to me. I think your 3s are fine, boards might be slow for this team too. Dieng should get good blocks even in a smaller role, but dunno if he’ll pile up REB. Love Ellis at 50. I think a week or two in, if Lin goes off and his buzz gets even louder, I’d move him for a big man.

        @JB Gilpin:

Thanks man. What do you think about moving both Dieng and Mason for guys who are more stretch 4 types and will pad my 3 PM, points and steals. Like if I could get Thad and Ryan Anderson (and find someone to play the one C spot) then does that make sense? Or should I go the other way and trade a guard to get a BLKS/fg% big to give me a chance with Dieng and plum on board? Whic way would you advise going?

      • DK says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: hmm, I need your advice on better drafting strategy. I roughly get the idea of drafting minimum 3 PGs and 3 PF/C for ast/3s/stl and reb/Blk. Then try to get an alternate 4th of each is possible. I get my 4th PG and my guards are solid, but I seem to always miss my bigs because of that. My 3 different drafts, all my bigs are kinda weak even though I drafted all very solid bigs.

What am I missing here? For example, after Millsap, Favors, Gortat, RoLo, I figured I seem to have enough PF/C. Then I start filling with the rest with plug cats. When is blocks or rebounds deemed enough?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@DK: Well obviously reviewing teams is tough and it’s just a real quick read on what you have. Blocks look a little better looking at it again. To me I see Favors as high volume, decent from Gortat/RoLo/Millsap, then not much helping. I think hitting on one last blocks upside guy would totally sway my thinking, even though it’s probably closer to 60-70% they don’t pan out. Like Gobert, Dieng, Adams etc. and get one of those guys for your last pick.

          • DK says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: Well, Gobert is still available in FA. I can always drop Barnes to get him. What worries me is it leaves me with only 1 SF slot. If Carroll doesn’t play, doesn’t it mean I “lose” out the slot? Or does that not matter since filling stats categories are more impt?

My other team has similar issues too. Good guards, and then 3-4 bigs that blocks, but just not enough because the rest of the roster aren’t contributing much to reb and blocks.

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@DK: Gotcha, well if the matchup looks good I wouldn’t worry about it this week. I wouldn’t worry too much about having only 1 SF, but I’d be sure to stream some games in there though in those weeks.

    Hey guys.
    12 team, H2H league, 9-cat

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Mike: Haha love the succinct strategy communication. You went for it and succeeded with the punt!

H2H – not worried about the treys, you can stream what you need and I think you’re already fine. The dimes is the main takeaway for me, two solid PG but I don’t think they’re enough. Well LeBron obviously helps too. If you got the first impact PG that emerges off the wire, I think you’d be good there too.

      • Mike says:
        (link)

        @JB Gilpin:

Thanks for the advice! My first season of fantasy so wasn’t 100% sure on everything.

Would it be a good idea to try and make some trade with larry sanders (for a PG) since I’ve already got drum and Jordan for blocks/Rebs? If so, who should I target?
Basically, is Larry Sanders surplus to needs?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Mike: Looks good for a new player man! Yeah I would totally try that out. I do think Sanders might be a little superfluous. PG to target… Well Calderon/Teague/MCW all seem to be in that range near Sanders. I’d like any of those. Another thing you can do is look at opposing rosters and one with bad big men offer a trade to them.

          • Mike says:
            (link)

            @JB Gilpin:

I just saw that Kendall Marshall is a free agent.
Would it be a good move to trade Sanders, waive KCP and pick up Marshall for those dimes?

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@Mike: Nah, Marshall has a very uncertain role on such a bad team… I’d hold off, but I’m definitely monitoring Marshall’s first few games.

hey yo. got offered lawson/melo/afflalo/c.brewer for my millsap/kawhi/burks/r.anderson in a 14 team 9 cat roto league.. i need the assists but am afraid of lawson’s health. should i still take it?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@your mom: Whoa, big roster change if you do it! I’m worried about Lawson’s health too, but not too much. Ya know, I think I’m turning it down, MIllsap and Melo I think is closer than anyone since I love Millsap, would rather Kawhi over Lawson, Anderson over either wing you get, so I would try for more or give up less to make this work.

      • your mom says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Yeap, lots of pieces on the move. haha he’s fine with melo/lawson/adams for millsap/kawhi/burks. is that better? oh and for reference the rest of my team is:
westy, knight, al jeff, ryan anderson, m. gasol, t.ross, porter, carroll, a.bradley and varejao.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@your mom: Yeah it’s definitely better, he took off Ryan Anderson then made his mix of wings into Adams… Still kinda feels like changing junk throw in to get you to lower the price, still thnk I’d want a little more. Maybe replace Adams for his last PG, if it’s anyone of value.

          • your mom says:
            (link)

            @JB Gilpin: ok thanks man.

12 team H2H huuuuuuge league, we start 15 guys, bench 6. I need depth badly…

Was offered Teague and Butler for my Noah and Hickson. I can probably trade for another big, is this worth losing the big, ugly fella?

    Thanks!!!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jake: Since it’s so deep, yeah I like that trade! I think Noah overachieved last year with no Rose and injuries scare me even though he seems to fight through them to get a lot of games played. But yea, I’m doin it. Any time man!

Just drafted in my 13-team roto league, 10-cat. FGM, FG%, FT%, 3PTM, 3%, PTS, REB, AST, BLK, STL. I got stuck in a locked groove where I couldn’t stop drafting Cs and PGs. Here is my team. I would appreciate any feedback. I picked 12th overall.

    PG – Kemba Walker (3, 38)
    SG – Monta Ellis (4, 41)
    G – Jose Calderon (6, 67)
    SF – Khris Middleton (13, 168)
    PF – Serge Ibaka (1, 12)
    F – Paul Milsap (2, 15)
    C – Pau Gasol (5, 64)
    C – Jordan Hill (8, 93)
    util- Darren Collison (7, 90)
    util – Brandon Knight (9, 116)
    BN – Mason Plumlee (10, 119)
    BN – Spencer Hawes (11, 142)
    BN – Rodney stuckey (12, 145)
    BN – Andrea Bargnani (14, 171)
    BN – Jeremy Lamb (15, 194)

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Principal Blackman: Well, drafting PG and C is what we like to do too!

Really like this team. Got two bigs I love this year then still plenty of PG depth. I think while KD is out, Lamb will be plenty usable, and no issue streaming SF early. 3% should be good too with Calderon. Heavy PG was awesome too since no TO. Really not much cold water I can throw on this team, a lot of Razzball favorites, nice work!

    Hey JB. Just drafted

Backcourt: Curry, Derozan, J. Teague, Lin, JR. Smith, B. Knight, J. Jack
Frontcourt: Thad, Drummond, Noah, Sullinger, McRoberts, G. Green

Its a H2H Points league, and Ive been offered Wall and Aldridge for my Curry and Noah. Thoughts?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Nikko Respeto: Nah, not giving up Curry in a Pts league for that trade. Curry is right up there for best player in a Pts so I’m holding on.

  58. Sam says:

Hey boys, you guys gave me solid advice getting prepped for my draft today, but the guy a couple spots in front kept on stealing my picks (drummo, vucevic, noah) so didn’t end up as well as I’d hoped. But here’s my team for H2H 10 cat (with double-doubles and minutes played) 10man league. Would love some input and whether/who i should look at trying to trade or pick up. Was champ last year, so was looking to defend my title but not so sure now.
    Steph Curry
    Lowry
    Millsap
    Favors
    Joshy Smith

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Sam: Damn, that sucks man! Yeah the RCL drafts have been tough, people know who I want!

Awesome upside bigs I like. Wish you had more PG though, obviously like your top 2 a ton, but I don’t know if assists are quite up there. Well, Wroten will help early. If Wroten plays a lot for ya early, FT% might be an issue and actually will be all year with Smith/Gortat/Favors/Noel. I would think about moving a hot big early on for another PG. Maybe if Sully starts hot for a slow starting PG.

      (link)

@DAMIANTRILLARD: Schweet I better give some good advice, I want that drank!

Whoa, Collison 114?! Yikes Henson 167?! Not gonna get much hate for this team! Love the ealy bigs then G run. Assists still might be a tad light, but in a 16 teamer they’re close. Blks/Reb should have no issues. Since I like your deep late picks, I think your scoring is OK, but I could see it being slow on some weeks. Only trade I can think of is getting one more AST guy from one of your sleeper bigs that pans out a couple weeks in the year, but lookin good man!

      • DAMIANTRILLARD says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: What are your thoughts on completely punting assists especially in this scoring emphasized league? Which pg should I move and target?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@DAMIANTRILLARD: Definitely better to punt when there’s more categories. I still don’t like to do it, and like I said, I think you’re close already not in dire straights. Ummm Jameer Nelson is a guy I like, Elfrid Payton? Both undervalued right now and I think get dimes.

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@booya: Love how you pieced together assists late. Durant AND Harden?!?! Yikes! Blocks and boards might be an issue, Henson is a big Xfactor here. I think he works out though. But I think the only need to look for is a big man butnot enough to trade for now, and one should come off the wire pretty quick so I wouldn’t hesitate for one that starts hot early.

        • booya says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: Thanks! Yea it was an auction draft, I paid $53 for Durant and $69 for Harden…

So you’re thinking dump the slower starter of Burks or Pierce for the first hot big man?

          • JB Gilpin

  61. Jon says:
    (link)

Quick one: should I drop TJ Warren or JR Smith for Otto Porter in dynasty? Good depth at nth wing spots and I hate JR smith who hates the triangle. 12-tm 9-cat Roto. Keel Warren for future or smith for now? Gotta get Porter, right?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jon: Yeah def get Porter. In a dynasty, yeah Smith is certainly winding down in his career trajectory, but it’s Warren as the drop for me. Barely gonna play for the foreseeable future, dunno that he brings much more than scoring even in big minutes.

@Pops: Yeah I like Aldridge, maybe this slight injury has the owner hung up, but doesn’t sound too serious. You don’t really need much though, ya know what I might do is wait until tomo night and see if Kobe goes off (which i think he will), then offer for Aldridge straight up. Might work!

Am I eight inguries away from filling my team with scrubs and changing my name to the REPLACEMENTS is Keanue Reeves draftable??? Maybe he can save my team! Cause as of right now all I got is Plumlee to fall back on of Brolo goes down again and again and again and again.. What was I thinking but as the 67th pick wouldnt of you??

    1. Westbrook
    2. Blake griffin
    3. Al horford
    4. Dirk
    5. Jabari Parker
    6. Nerlens Noel

Any suggestions on cats/players to target? Any roto rankings and sleepers on the site? I only see h2h.

    Thx

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Timmy riggins: Westbrook in no TO = winner. And 11th?! Wow. Nah ranks are geared for H2H, but they’re usable for roto i.e. sleepers ahead of ADP on there would be for roto too. Def targeting PGs. In non-TO they’re huge. Elfrid Payton and Lin are big ones since they turn it over a lot.

      • Timmy riggins says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: is the rest of my team solid? Which round would you grab oladipo and beal?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Timmy riggins: Yeah great start! Griff/Noel bad at FT, but Dirk helps. I’d def try for Oladipo with the injury discount, bc his turnovers are so bad, but still not until round 9 or so.

    PG – Steph Curry
    SG – Monta Ellis
    G – Jose Calderon
    SF – Jabari Parker
    PF – Paul Millsap
    F – Al Horford
    C – Derrick Favors
    C – Spencer Hawes
    U – Isaiah Thomas
    U – Giannis Antetokounmpo
    BEN – Elfrid Payton
    BEN – Draymond Green
    BEN – Gorgui Dieng

    Thanks for any feedback.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@bigwormsherm: Love the PG/AST depth. Solid bigs too. Pretty nasty for a 12er! I think all but Dieng are in my top 100. I really don’t see much to not like…TO might get troublesome, but I like everything else too good to care, nice work!

  67. Nikko Respeto says:

This is the last Curry offer I’m gonna consider: Curry and Derozan for Lowry and Griffin.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Kenny: @Nikko Respeto: I think this was all for the same thing 🙂 Agree with the upgrades it’s still really close. I think you did well though, might’ve taken me a tad more to lose Curry, but not bad at all.

  68. DK says:

      (link)

@DK: Got ya above, yeah it’s hard to stay 100% balanced, would just keep an eye on the wire for dem bigs! Or consider a 2-for-1 trade.

  69. Kenny says:
    (link)

I folded and dished out curry. I got Wall Aldridge and Gay for Noah curry and Thad. I feel like I upgrafed at F and C with only a smallish downgrade at Pg

  70. Lasandro says:
    (link)

Tip of the cap to you, gentleman. So I joined a third league the other day, just for kicks. Was a super late addition to it and had to draft while at dinner with a group of friends, which resulted in me missing out on a critical pick and being penalized with and autodraft pick of Colli. Even worse, my next two picks of Sully and Giannis went the NEXT TWO PICKS ha.

    13-team, H2H, 9 cat (FG%, FT %, 3PM, PTs, Rbd, Ast, Stl, Blk, TO), 12th overall pick:

    KD
    Ibaka
    Horford
    Rubio
    Holiday
    Matthews
    Monroe
    IT2
    Collison
    Harris
    Stuckey
    McDaniels
    Sims
    KCP

That last pick was an absolute homage to Razzball Nation! I’m depressed that I just missed out on Giannis but I think I did ok (particularly to start with) considering I was trying my best not to look like that rude ass on his phone at the table 😉 I personally think I may need help in brds and 3pms. Also, thoughts on Jeff Adrien being waved by the Rockets? We were all over him last season with the Bucks, remember? Guy was putting up silly rebounds and blocks numbers in like 15min of action

And apart from KD, which other 3 should I bench?

@Lasandro: Haha nice dedication my man! Love drafting in public.

First with Adrien – yeah that was nuts. Team-friendly contract and a need… He musta been playing Dwight too hard in practice. Actually had him ranked in the top 200 (barely)!

Blocks look light, and you’ll be behind most weeks in points til KD is back. Other than that, like that team! KCP at the end = awesome.

Is it a weekly league? Or can you just bench who isn’t playing?

        • Lasandro says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: Wes Johnson available too

      • Lasandro says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: So so strange right? You may not be far off with your prediction ha – he’s such a rough tough dude. He reminded me of Reggie Evans with insane timing for blocks. And certainly more upside on the offensive end. How he’s not on an NBA roster right now is a little beyond me. If he ends up as a backup PF on a mid to lower squad, we could see really good oer min numbers out of him again.

Well go on then – what do you suggest? I read all yoru replies to other posts because I enjoy the suggestions you and @slim come up with. Who’s droppable/trade-able on my squad? Pts and blocks.. should I be targeting a Dwight with one of my better players? Millsap perhaps? Or can you think of anyone I could just pic off the wire? I took KJ and Sims with my last two picks to try and shore up the lack of brds, blks and pts. Some notable guys on the wire in these areas are Young, Vince, Wroten (at least till MCW returns), O’Quinn, Olynik, Hickson..

Believe it’s a weekly setting and everyone bar 4 benched players play (so, not only the starting 5). Cheers!

@Lasandro: I’d def try to get Millsap if you could! Dwight, ehhh, I think he’s overrated.

I dunno if I’m making any moves yet. I love KCP and I like your bottom end guys over FA. Since it’s weekly, nah I won’t grab Wes J or O’Quinn, I like them to stream for tonight though in daily.

  72. JB:

What’s up over the internet amigo? Been far too long. Hope all is well. Not exactly the right forum, but wanted to commend you for the excellent SP work you did on razzball – baseball this season. Job well done. Razzball’s baseball content and coverage is best in class. Awesome stuff by you and Grey/Rudy and the gang. Double mazels.

On to HOOPS, where I will be a bit more “public” with my observations, thoughts and weekly commentary (work and travel pending). Glad to see your and Slim’s work has grown to podcast levels. Very nice, dudes. Famous and shit.

Only 1 serious money hoops league for me this year. Side Note: Didn’t have a chance to review your pre-draft rankings until this week. In hindsight, seems like we share same sentiments on a few guys (not surprising).

FORMAT: 12 team, Weekly H2H, 11 categories (standard 9 + FGM, FTM). Emphasis on scoring, obviously.
    START: 4 guards, 4 forwards, 2 centers, 2 util + 5 bench. 17 players total.
    SQUAD:
G(4) – russell westbrook, *victor oladipo, *michael carter-williams, brandon knight
F (4) – tobias harris, terrence jones, jeff green, terrence ross
    C (2) – paul milsap, dwight howard
UTIL (2) – alec burks, steven adams
BENCH(5) – **julius randle (meet my terrence jones for 2014), ben mclemore, lou williams, **evan fournier, donald sloan

*injured. this draft was held the night before Oladipo smashed his face in practice. fun.
** will be starting Week 1 for Oladipo and MCW

MY THOUGHTS: I think I’d like to have another BIG in mix, but still have some decent upside sprinkled throughout. Losing Oladipo for a month early stings, but I managed to grab Fournier, who should be adequate for a few weeks.

Appreciate your take. Even if you hate it. ; )

@EL BURRO: Yo, what up BURRO?! So good to see ya, was very sad and lonely 2nd half of last year…

Thanks for the kind words on baseball man! I have a recap post that’s done and publishing some time in November. I think I did pretty well with my ranks for SP.

Hah, dunno if the Pod is making us famous 🙂 But yes, has been a lot of fun making those.

Definitely like that team man! 11 cats helps take the sting out of Dwight’s horrible FT%, especially since his big volume helps the FTM when he decides to make em. Yeah sucks two PG I really liked are having injury issues either lingering or flukey. When they’re all healthy think you have good PG depth. I think you might struggle until then though 🙁 Get healthy BURRO! Love me some Millsap, he’ll carry us all!

I dunno, I’m not a huge Randle guy… Seems to be more a board only kinda guy than TJones, but could develop fully! At least D’Antoni isn’t the coach amiright?!

      • @JB Gilpin:

        Yup; me in the flesh.

The PG injuries are a total bummer. Also, the 12 team league is a big adjustment for me. Used to 14-16 teamers… So, it serves me right going after my own kind. This is the year it makes sense to load up on BIGS early and go value hunting in the mid-late rds for guards, in my opinion… although I aint mad at Westy in this format. He may put up 26/game the first 2 months.

RE: Julius. Lakers are gonna be dog poop. If they finish 4th in the Pacific, I’ll be surprised. Assuming KObe shuts it down around the ASB… Julius should be a nice upside 2nd half hold. Can’t see Boozer staying healthy either. Smelling a 14/8 type stat line with 28-30 min for Purple Julius… Remember — I’m also the guy who had to talk you into liking T. Jones, J. Hill and more importantly, A. Drummond, last year. .. ; )

In terms of “help”, wire is not awesome cause of our league depth. Best available FA: Harrison Barnes (starter), Kyle Singler (starter), Doug McDermott, JaVale McGee, JJ Hickson, Joel Embiid, Chase Budinger, Randy Foye, Iman Shumpert (starter), Hollis Thompson, Tiago Splitter, Patrick Patterson

        Like any of those options?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@EL BURRO: Yeah that’s been the main strategy for me too. Bigs at least 2 of first 3 rounds, then hoarding PG.

Haha, I think I liked Jones most of the year! And Hill! Just his PT scared me. Drummond… Yeah… Better than I ever thought he’d be that’s for sure! Slightly below consensus on Drummo, but I think we’re ahead on Jones and Hill this year now 🙂

I think McLemore is god awful, but even with those barren options, I’m letting him go. I’d grab McGee to swap out the “Mc”s, who I don’t really like too much, but upside is worth a top 200 rank unlike some of those other guys haha.

          • @JB Gilpin:

Its a good sound strategy re: Bigs.

Respectfully, I think you’re a tad off on Mclemore. Being the devoted Cousins owner that I was (3 years in a row!), watched a ton of Kings hoop last year. 2nd half of the 13-14′ campaign (particularly Mar/April) McLemore was very serviceable. Granted, Kings drafted Stauskas from Michigan to further muddle SG, but Mclemore is far more athletic and a better on ball defender. Key for McLemore is consistency and shot selection. Curious to see how he does in his 2nd stanza.

Hear you on JaVale – maddening upside. He makes me wanna punch a wall, however, so theres that. Sometimes I feel like he’s slightly retarded or just slow on the uptake. Full disclosure, l drafted him and already dropped him for Fournier in light of the Oladipo news!

I’ll be watching the PT in Denver to start. JJ Hickson on a minutes limit, correct? he’s also available…Is Mozgof really talented? Just not a fan of him…

            • JB Gilpin

              JB Gilpin says:
              (link)

@EL BURRO: Interesting, haven’t heard a lot of McLemore backing… I know he’s a better defender, I’m of course slanted by my fantasy angle 🙂 I think PT is gonna be rough, I think we see a lot of Sessions/Colly backcourts too, on top of Stauskas.

Aha, so you had McGee! Yeah, I mean I have him like 150ish, not like I’m expecting that much, but has more upside than those other options.

Shocking Hickson is back. Def on a minutes limit and I’m not touching him. Mozgov is OK… He actually can shoot the ball for a 7 footer and boards better than Brook Lopez, but nothing too special past that. Losing out on playing time with McGee and Hickson back hurts.

    Hi JB/Slim,

Just drafted in my other real league (12-team 9-cat auction roto w/ $200):

    Chris Bosh, Mia C $49
    Paul Millsap, Atl PF $28
    Gordon Hayward, Uta SG $19
    Pau Gasol, Chi PF $16
    Derrick Favors, Uta PF $14
    Klay Thompson, GS SG $24
    Kemba Walker, Cha PG $23
    Jrue Holiday, Nor PG $19
    Isaiah Thomas, Pho PG $2
    Patrick Beverley, Hou PG $3
    Mason Plumlee, Bkn PF $1
    Draymond Green, GS SF $1
    Jordan Hill, LAL PF $1

I really wanted Bosh for this league, since in roto FG% and FT% are really hard to improve later on in the season, and Bosh is projected to be a top big man with decent percentages. Then of course I also bought two of the Razzball favorite big men in Millsap and Favors. I think my first blunder was in fighting for Pau Gasol at that price, since it ended up with me not having enough juice left to fight for my target PGs (Conley sold for $38 later on, too high based on my blueprint), and was forced to buy 2 of the last tier 2 PGs in Kemba and Jrue.

Now, I am hoping that I have enough PG depth (plus Hayward) to be competitive in AST, but I fear that I have punted FG% in doing so (also TO, but that I don’t mind). Should I just play this out for the first few months, or should I look into trading for a better PG at this point? Kemba has already taken a hit in his trade value due to the preseason injury.

Also, since this is roto with max games for each slot, who should I start for now, Mason Plumlee or Jordan Hill? Or should I just play all of them for now and worry about reducing pace later on?

Thanks for taking the time out to answer each and every question in these comments. Can’t wait for the season to begin! 🙂

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@decaf: Yup, I def like Bosh a lot more in roto too, seems about right with your price there. Gasol was a pretty good value, I don’t mind that one.

Nah, I think your PG are pretty solid. IT2 for $2?! Love it. But yeah, maybe one more would be helpful. I’d play it out at least this first week and see how it goes. FG% indeed looks rough to me too, but you can monitor that early.

I’d be playing Hill over Plumlee right now, but with BroLo recovering, I think I’d play both early. Easier to ease off games than have to ramp it up in April.

It’s fun talking hoops all day everyday, so it’s my pleasure man! Can’t wait for tomorrow either!

      • decaf says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Ok, I’ll play most everyone for now and see how it goes. In the event that I do need to trade for a better PG, I think my best bet would be one of my backup bigs (Favors or Gasol) in a package, while hopefully having either Hill or Plumlee (or both!) step up and meet their ceilings. I’m not touching Hayward or Klay since I have zero wing depth. Do you agree with this?

Also, Kevin Love just became available (owner auto-drafted AD, Love, and scrubs). I bet he’s looking for better depth at this point. Any good 2-for-1s I can maybe offer? I’m not really short on REB or 3PM at this point, but hey, it’s Kevin Love!

        Thanks as always!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@decaf: Yeah I’d hold onto your wings too. I like that strategy looking for a PG, sell a guy high that looks good early.

Hmmm, well Gasol+something for Love would be interesting, but I like all your other main guys! I’d actually be fine offering Gasol+Hayward for Love, helps your FG% and you can stream a wing through the week, but I dunno if he’d take it. Any time!

Hey lads, Here’s my team for H2H 10 cat (with double-doubles and minutes played) 10man league. Was champ last year, so was looking to defend my title, but i missed a few key picks i was aiming for, so let me know what I’m lacking/potential pick ups. Thanks heaps really appreciate it!!!
    1. Steph Curry
    2. Lowry
    3. Millsap
    4. Favors
    5. Joshy Smith
    6.Gortat
    7.Noel
    8. Sully
    9. Collison
    10.Beal
    11. T. Harris
    12. Wroten
    13. Ross (potentially pick up wes johnson 1st week cus of schedule and LA injuries)

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Sam: Love those top 4! Lot’s of goodness and minutes. Josh Smith 5th seems a little high to me. I like Gortat and Noel so much more, but since you got them, I’m not worried that much by it. Gortat especially in a dub-dub league, great value!

Yup I’d grab Johnson if only for the game tonight. I’m not a huge Ross guy.

Love you went big heavy for your format. FT%, even with an awesome Curry, might be bad at times. Smith/Favors/Millsap/Gortat/Noel/Wroten are all gonna hurt. Everything else should be solid though!

After Wes, I would stream good FT guys mid-to-late week if FT% is close and monitor boards and blocks. If you’re killing those early, maybe sit a big or two to try and win FT too.
