Wow, what a wild night across the NBA-osphere. ¬†Tons of injuries, lots of scrubs getting some burn, if I didn’t know better, I woulda though it was late March. ¬†But no! ¬†I guess we can start with that other JB as Jerryd Bayless moved into the starting line-up and lit up the Hawks for a season-high 29 Pts. ¬†Shooting 12-21, it was pretty ThrAGNOFfy for 29/2/2/1/0 with 5 treys. ¬†Why you avoid the 3-point specialists on draft day! ¬†Who knows what preppy-boy Brad Stevens is going to do next, and while getting the Pacers on Saturday isn’t a great matchup, home games vs. GS, BKN, then DET next week could be a 10 3PTM week for JB. ¬†And while he’s not as multi-cat as the real JB over here, we can all grab the band if we need some scoring. ¬†I’ll wear a headband as well for the moral support! ¬†Here’s what else went down on a very busy night of injuries and surprise games in the NBA:Please, blog, may I have some more?
And you thought that the trade deadline was gonna be a dud. And to that, sir or madam, I give you two words: Byron Freakin’ Mullens. Bam!¬†The Sixers have just dropped the mic on the NBA stage, a la Chris Rock.
Actually, all joking aside, Lord Byron might be worth watching in deeper leagues – if the Sixers stick with the free flowing offence they’ve been playing thus far, there’s a long shot he might actually produce. He started for the Bobcats for half a season, and wasn’t all that bad. Yeesh!, that’s a limp di*k endorsement if I’ve ever given one. Please, blog, may I have some more?
Oh man, a busy day yesterday in hoops! ¬†The obvious first mention is GO HEELS! ¬†Oh man, I feel like storming the court today. ¬†I think Chapel Hill fans everywhere this morning should storm their office/classroom/crowded area in a flash mob at some point. ¬†Then we have LeBron James getting his nose broken by Serge A Broke-a! ¬†The mayor of Cleveland has already issued Serge Ibaka a key to the city. ¬†Fine LeBron $5,000 for flopping! ¬†Man, the next round of internet videos of “LeBroning” are going to be a lot more like “The Knockout Game”. ¬†Seriously, even LeBron haters have to love he got it broke a step or two out before throwing it down. ¬†Word still to come if the nose is indeed broken, but my money is on yes. ¬†Regardless, we’ve seen a few players come back from a broken nose in the same game donning the Hannibal mask, so I doubt he misses any time after passing concussion tests last night. ¬†MaskBron! ¬†And then we had the trade deadline come and go, with nothing too major albeit a few surprises. ¬†I’m starting a bit off the reservation with a guy I’m going to pump hard and is a pickup now in 12-teamers. ¬†Lord Byron Mullens! ¬†After trading their former starting 5 which we’ll get in below, it’s Mullens and Arnett Moultrie manning down the C fort in the abandon ship Sixers front line, with Mullens picked up for draft picks. ¬†I know Mullens is boring, but he was usable while with the Bobcats posting a 10.6/6.4/1.5/0.6/0.6 line with 1.2 treys in 27 minutes a game in 12-13. ¬†His sub-40 FG% blew, sure, but he’s a perimeter shooter who can play decent D so I think he will get run. ¬†He’s a lot better than Moultire in my opinion and I think will get big minutes. ¬†And I don’t know why, maybe it’s because he looks so goofy or maybe because he’s been in the league 5 years, but Mullens is actually only 25 when I thought he might be 30. ¬†For a team tanking, he’s a perfect acquisition to help rack up points to try and fill maybe 2 more seats a night in Philly. ¬†“Thanks for coming Mr. and Mrs. Mullens!” ¬†Here’s what else went down yesterday, starting with NBA deadline deals:Please, blog, may I have some more?
Dude, I had the title “Breaking News – Nets File Paperwork To Relocate To London” all ready to go for a Nets open, then saw everyone was saying that… #Groupthink! ¬†So let’s all sit back and marvel at what Lance Stephenson did last night. ¬†The 28/4/4/1/0 line was not his best line on the year, the %s (10-17 FG 3-7 3PTM 5-5 FT) were awesome, sure, but I think he did something ridiculous that was off the stat line. ¬†He looked like the best player on the floor. ¬†Just look at some of these sick dimes! ¬†But you do have to question why he fell over on that second one… Haha… Maybe made them look better than they actually were by flopping around like a fish out of water… Anywho, Stephenson had some concerns with two bad games right when Danny Granger was back, but has quickly quelled those question marks and back on track. ¬† With Stephenson cemented, I think it’s time to lose George Hill in virtually all formats if you haven’t already. ¬†Breaking news – I know – and we’ve talked about it a few times in the comments, but his shocking 81% -ownership in Yahoo combined with last night’s 3/3/5 game (marks his highest assist total since December 20th) – it’s just not happening. ¬†In fact, if you told me heading into the year Stephenson (5.2) would be averaging two more assists a game than Hill (3.3), I might’ve spontaneously combusted. ¬†But hey, it’s working for the Pacers and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. ¬†Unless of course you’re in first place in a 10 or 12-team league and still own Hill… You can fix that! ¬†Here’s what else I saw last night in fantasy hoops:Please, blog, may I have some more?
Man… It just hasn’t been the best few years for Kris Humphries… ¬†The divorce. ¬†The loss of a starting job. ¬†Traded as a dump to Boston. ¬†But he’s actually been a pretty decent fantasy player lately, including getting a surprise starting nod last night, fairly under-the-radar. ¬†Unfortunately, none-a-dat-matters when watching last night’s game! ¬†Man, talk about lucking out with the games I got this week, as I had Yahoo highlights for the Celtics at Clippers, and the now-infamous “Welcome to my Poster” dunk. ¬†Just dirty from Blake Griffin. ¬†If you didn’t see¬†where I cut the highlight, right after Ralph Lawler says “over, and over, and over…” it cuts back to Humphries who gives the easiest to lip read F bomb you could imagine. ¬†Hilarious! ¬†I lost my cookies all over the office. ¬†I shoulda put “And-one” on the highlight too, but my face melted. ¬†Getting back to fantasy, Blake can have his own poster this year, producing at a great rate and a great pick even for the unknowledgable NBA fan in your league who reached for him for the highlights. ¬†As I mentioned a month or so back, Griffin has been really good this year capped off with a 29/6/8/2/0/highlight of the year line last night. ¬†He showed us why fantasy hoops is underrated in the fantasy community. ¬†It beats football by actually requiring skill and not small-sample luck, and gives us the best highlights to shove it in the face of baseball. ¬†“Oh look, I had Ryan Howard on my team and he actually hit a homer, look at this moon shot!” ¬†“Pssshhhh, I had Blake in today and look at him murder Kris Humphries!” ¬†(full disclaimer I love fantasy baseball). ¬†Enjoy the ride if you nabbed Blake. ¬†Here’s what else happened last night in the NBA:Please, blog, may I have some more?
Ohhhh man, the mile run. ¬†Nothing establishes popularity in middle school more than the mile run. ¬†You have the athletes who can just jog but have to semi-try, the dorks who are OK at sports that do pretty well (me!), the cool kids that just walk, the unhealthy people who saunter, and then the coolest dudes who hide behind the scoreboard on the other side of the track as the teachers and smoke cigs. ¬†True story! ¬†But the real run to talk about this morning is C.J. Miles‘ run, who’s capped off three straight great games. ¬†Hit a ridiculous 10 treys last night, for a 34/5/2/2 line shooting 11-18 and 10-14 from deep. ¬†If only someone called it yesterday! ¬†And proof to the theory of ThrAGNOF. ¬†Got you 10 treys for just one spot start. ¬†Great night for Miles and shows us yet again that if you need to stream guys, play anyone facing the Sixers. ¬†As I mentioned yesterday, their D is league worst in points allowed by nearly 7 points more a game given up than the second-worst. ¬†It’s a fast-paced team with bad D no matter how you slice it. ¬†Unfortunately for Miles, the acquisition of Luol Deng is really going to hurt his minutes, making him a guy you’re probably not picking up in standard leagues or solid 12-teamers. ¬†Just won’t have the minutes or upside. ¬†But luckily he had one last game to show his range and should stay in the mix for deeper leaguers. ¬†Here’s what else I saw last night in a big slate of games:Please, blog, may I have some more?
Merry Christmas Razzball Nation! ¬†I hope everyone is looking forward to a great holiday. ¬†What have you asked for for Christmas? ¬†A ridiculous stroke of luck to get you a Fantasy Football championship tonight? ¬†A Christmas Day where three of your guys have triple doubles? ¬†Mine is hoping that no more injuries roll through the NBA, at least with questionable return dates. ¬†Hey, at least Brook Lopez has a certain return date. ¬†October 2014. ¬†Huge loss (I was going to say break, but um, yea) for fantasy owners with a broken foot. ¬†Here’s what I said in my ranks with him at 50, lower than most other places: “Love his game, had him top-20 in May.¬† Foot injury and big trade limits #s.” ¬†That’s me quoting me! ¬†Ok, ok, so I get a ton wrong and you can’t project injuries (which I didn’t really, gotta love vagueness!), but I avoided Lopez everywhere so I am not suffering a stocking full of coal like BroLo owners. ¬†BroLo’s stocking is actually full of a swollen foot, but you get the idea. ¬†Andray Blatche becomes a must-own with the boost in minutes, and was already at double-digits and 19:40 plus of playing time in 15 of 17 games before Friday night’s dud when BroLo got hurt. ¬†I see him grabbing 7 to 8 boards with decent %s – along with his scoring – for a bottom end guy on rosters with a tad of upside. ¬†Here’s what else/who else got hurt over the weekend:Please, blog, may I have some more?
As my good friends at Mr. Show previously theorized, 24 was thought to be the highest number. ¬†“What about 30?!” ¬†And then NBA scorers were pulling exactly what happens in that skit. ¬†“What about 31?” ¬†“What about 32?” ¬†“I gotta ask, what about 33!” ¬†Then Gilbert Arenas was like, “if people keep scoring like this, I’m gonna have to shoot em with Crittenton’s .45!” ¬†It wasn’t necessarily that many guys going off, just a few you wouldn’t have guessed. ¬†I’m trying to pick the most off the rails 30+ point night, so I think I’ll go with Alec Burks, who just looked awful in the two games before last night. ¬†7-25 his past two outings, but goes 12-17 last night for career-highs in both points with 31 and dimes at 7. ¬†Added three boards and four steals with two treys for good measure. ¬†Burks has always looked like a good athlete out there, but never like a guy who could take over like that. ¬†I think a good debate is Burks or Terrence Ross. ¬†I’ll lean Ross, but very close, I just think Burks is too inconsistent. ¬†Here’s what else went down last night in hoops:Please, blog, may I have some more?
At last!  At long last.
The fantasy basketball season is upon us and we finally get to start seeing our lineups in action. ¬†I, for one, am pumped like never before. ¬†Sure it may be because it’s my first full season as the Razzball Editor on hoops, and sure, it may be because it’s the last year the North Carolina team will be called the “Bobcats”, but hey, we all have our things to look forward to!
If you’re new to Razzball, I’ll be giving you daily recaps of everything that went down across fantasy hoops (starting tomorrow) along with contributions from our other great writers (Pete, Dan and Slim) throughout the year. ¬†And if you missed my mention of it once or twice through the preseason, I work for a company that makes the Yahoo Fantasy Basketball player highlights which will start going up tonight! ¬†We also make the TNT Overtime highlights which come up on the timeline as you’re watching the game (It’s free! ¬†And starts tonight!). ¬†I bring this up, well first because it’s the coolest job, and second because I get to watch a lot of hoops and break down film of typically two games a night. ¬†So at the end of Daily Recaps I’ll be letting you what games I’m watching that night and you can either tweet me (@jbgilpin) if you’re wondering about something in the game or ask in comments the next day. ¬†We’re next level here at Razzball! Please, blog, may I have some more?
Welcome to my second round. ¬†The second round is on me! ¬†That way I can buy all cheaper/low-shelf swill and not look like a cheapskate [underutilized word]. ¬†Seriously, try that next time you’re out. ¬†Well, to be honest it only really works on the 8th or 9th round. ¬†“What is in this snake juice?!” “It’s basically rat poison!” ¬†“Baba Booey!”
So these guys are all still elite talents, just have those lingering question marks that would have me passing on them. ¬†I know you’re all gonna yell at¬†Paul George¬†being a second rounder for me, I have comment ESP! ¬†Here’s how I see the remainder of the top 20 with off-season adjustments (previous ranks from my¬†Off-Season Rankings¬†are in parentheses before this re-rank):Please, blog, may I have some more?
