Disregarding the obvious point that Horford isn’t doing anything for you now, at best, this trade breaks you even next season (which is what you said you were looking for with these trades). Why not just stand pat with the best PG, best SF and top 3 Cs in the NBA?

The problem with giving up Rose and James is that you’re giving up perhaps the best SF and perhaps the best PG (Durant and Paul may argue that the other two are the best). No matter what their exact rank, it’s going to be almost impossible for you to get back the same value you’re giving away. Not completely impossible, but pretty darn close.

If he sees Lin as a top PG, you can get a Stoudemire/Hibbert/Bynum-type. Heck, for a lot of owners, just having the flavor of the month (week, year, whatever) is enticing enough. Look at the difference in attitude between Blake Griffin owners last year versus this year.

Try for a second-tier big. If everyone laughs you out of each offer, you’ll know what type of crowd you’re dealing with.

It works with football, but fitting football’s style into a different sport is for the birds. For what it’s worth, it really doesn’t make sense for the Knicks to rush ‘Melo back with them playing so well AND Stoudemire set to return. I’m still betting he plays no more than thrice this week.
