At last!  At long last.

The fantasy basketball season is upon us and we finally get to start seeing our lineups in action.  I, for one, am pumped like never before.  Sure it may be because it’s my first full season as the Razzball Editor on hoops, and sure, it may be because it’s the last year the North Carolina team will be called the “Bobcats”, but hey, we all have our things to look forward to!

If you’re new to Razzball, I’ll be giving you daily recaps of everything that went down across fantasy hoops (starting tomorrow) along with contributions from our other great writers (Pete, Dan and Slim) throughout the year.  And if you missed my mention of it once or twice through the preseason, I work for a company that makes the Yahoo Fantasy Basketball player highlights which will start going up tonight!  We also make the TNT Overtime highlights which come up on the timeline as you’re watching the game (It’s free!  And starts tonight!).  I bring this up, well first because it’s the coolest job, and second because I get to watch a lot of hoops and break down film of typically two games a night.  So at the end of Daily Recaps I’ll be letting you what games I’m watching that night and you can either tweet me (@jbgilpin) if you’re wondering about something in the game or ask in comments the next day.  We’re next level here at Razzball!

With that in mind, I’m kicking off the year with the Bulls @ Heat on TNT Overtime, then standard Yahoo highlights for the Clippers @ Lakers.  That’s an ironic “road” game to start Doc’s tenure.  I wonder if he’ll still try to cover up the Lakers championship banners… Here’s what I’ll be watching for in those games, along with the other opener, ORL @ IND:

Kobe Bryant - Will be an unfamiliar feel to the Lakers debut with Kobe in street clothes.  He and Jack Nicholson are now both court side observers.  Perfect pairing in a reboot of Men In Black.  Hey the first one did end at a Knicks game!

Shawne Williams - Looks like he’s won the starting 3 spot for the Lakers.  No idea what to expect out of him, but his upside is limited in a ROS scope once Kobe wraps filming of the reboot.  Like A Josh breaking the FAAB bank early in the REL league to nab him.  But hey, any starter has immense value.  I’m a shark waiting to strike with my FAAB.

Lakers Old People – Pau Gasol coming off two knee surgeries and Steve Nash coming off injuring pretty much everything.  D’Antoni has hinted Nash won’t play in some back-to-backs, including the game after the opener on Wednesday.  Ugh Nash is going to be disappointing yet again.  Still strong on Gasol though.  Interested to see how fresh they look.

DeAndre Jordan - Off a huge preseason, we finally get to see if a change at coach can really do something for him.  Hey, it’s a good starting matchup against Chris Kaman, right?  Over/under, ummm, 34 blocks?  Hah, I’ll put it at 3 though.

J.J. Redick - First game as a Clip.  Interested to see how it goes and if he’s more Orlando Redick than Milwaukee Redick.

Antawn Jamison - Going to score 45 points in his Clippers debut.  Ok, so maybe I’m being overly optimistic as he’s my only player going on my REL squad.  Hey for a $1 player, I think he’ll be worth it.  Interested to see how many minutes/shots he gets.

Tobias Harris - Lots of red flags popping up against my boy.  Dealing with an ankle sprain, there’s also a chance Vaughn brings him off the bench based on reports.  I love the guy, but feeling iffy on his rank right now.

Victor Oladipo – Wouldn’t you just love your NBA debut to be against Paul George locking you down on D?  This might not go so well.  If I’m George, I’m wanting to just obliterate a rook to start the year.  Think Oladipo struggles.

Indiana Pacers - Should win handily with a comparable line-up to last year.  Shocker!  Danny Granger is hurt again.  Yeah, told you to avoid at all costs.

LeBron James - Will be fantasy’s #1 player a day into the season!  Well, maybe not, but I still think he has a monster year.  Can’t find that kind of analysis anywhere else.

Greg Oden - Still not playing.  I really like this guy (not in a fantasy scope though) and want him to get on the court.  I’ll send him a Get Well Soon card something akin to the one I sent Zach Greinke earlier in the year

Jimmy Butler - I’m all in on him and ranked him really high with a big role ahead.  He banged his knee in preseason, but played 37 minutes last Friday proving he’s fine.  Excited for his debut to the year.

Joakim Noah - Battled a bad groin, but should be fine heading into the season.  I’ll be watching his groin all night.

Really looking forward to the season and getting into Daily Notes with actual games being played!  It’s gonna be a hell of a season.  Good luck to all your teams and remember to check in with us every morning for Daily Recaps and weekly serials from our team!

With Ilyasova coming back, is Henson droppable for Vitor Fav? Vitor will start at least ><

Ready to get some basketball going :D

      @Zar:

I like Henson as a stash/hold player but if you’re desperate for blocks i could see you taking a flier on Vitor right now

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Zar: I would still hold Henson. Lost in the noise is Ekpe Udoh getting hurt so Henson will still get a lot of minutes, and Ilyasova will get eased in. Don’t think he plays much more than 30 minutes if that early on.

  2. Prodders says:

Not sure whether to hold on to Korver, for his 3s, or go with someone higher risk / upside, like Beverley / Henson / Burke / Jordan. Any thoughts? 10 team each cat h2h, so I thought Korver might be quite useful for certain matchups if his 3s can swing a cat, so to speak. Meow.

    • Prodders says:

      @Prodders: Olynyk is also available

    • Benny says:

@Prodders: Go Beverly… word came out today he’s starting and Lin is coming off the bench.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Prodders: Yeah I’d go Beverley too

      • Prodders says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: I’m totally on board with the idea… but Korver was a pretty solid contributor last year, and should start consistently this year no? I’m surprised he’s so little-owned. And anytime a new PG gets the start, I’m interested, but I don’t see where ppl are getting confidence that he’ll produce. He’s already 25 right?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Prodders: Not sure on his age, but it’s a fast paced team with good scorers. So it’s an interesting situation. I just don’t think Korver does much besides hit the threes, and I’m not big on 3-specialists.

Just got offered Harris for my Bledsoe in a 12 team H2H league w/ regular scoring plus a double double category.

    Leading to rejecting it.

Also, just a reminder NBA League Pass is free for the first week so make sure to make good use of it!

  5. Pavel says:

JB you’ve helped me get wall. I know you told me to stay patient before trying to make any more trades, but there are still some gems (like beverly) left on the wire, and I want to free up some space for guys that will produce. What trades should I look toward making?
    PG: J. Wall, Reggie Jackson
    SG: Paul George, Waiters, KCP
    SF: Korver
PF: Ibaka, Nowizki, Markieff Morris, Henson
    C: Mcgee, Olynyk, R. Lopez

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Pavel: I’d lose Morris for Beverley. Then trade wise, still nothing really sticks out, maybe move Jackson a few weeks in if he’s really hot and Westbrook sounds like he’s recovering well. But I don’t know if anyone would bite at that

H2H pts league auction tonight. 12 teams, 11 starters (4G, 4F, 2C, 1 Util), 4 bench spots and a $300 budget. This is a weird playoff league, where the league playoffs track the NBA playoffs and you can keep up to 5 from your regular season roster. So, the stars on top teams have even more value. About 15-20 guys per year go for $60+, with LeBron and Durant at $100+. We also get big bonuses for double doubles.

My question is, with an 11-man lineup (which has to be filled at the auction) and 15-man roster (the bench spots can be filled with FAAB), how many of those 15-20 elite guys should I be willing to spend on? Would you spend $250 on, say, Curry, George and Griffin, with $50 left for 8-12 lineup spots? Or go with 2 of the elite guys at $60+ and grab 3 or 4 other guys in the $40 range, hoping you get a deal on one of your other elite guys (this is my usual approach, but it usually ends with me in the playoffs but not winning, because no LeBron)? Or do you go for a twin towers approach, with $210 for two of LeBron, Durant, Howard and Paul?

Also, how much of your $300 would you pay for LeBron in this format? The last couple years he’s gone for around $110.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Steve Stevenson: Yeah I think LeBron would go for the most then, he’s almost assuredly going to the finals. The Thunder have a much tougher road. I’m all in on the Spurs, and while they might not be the biggest regular season guys, I think it’s a repeat of last year’s finals. That way you could go LeBron, Kawhi, Parker and fill out from there, that’s how I’d go into it. Maybe see if you can get decent value on Paul and Griffin like you said and get some Clips too.

      JB Gilpin says:

@Chris: Wow, love the Wall value. Think this is a high-risk, high-reward team with bigs like Cuz and Drummond and hoping Rondo gets healthy soon. I think you’ll be closer to reward side, lots of upside.

@JLeeishere: Haha thanks man! I love it too. Only drawback is it’s a night shift, but hey, any time your job doesn’t feel like “work” you’re in the right place! Looking forward to the season.

I dont want to sound incredibly stupid, but how you start your season is incredibly important (especially if you know nothing about basketball and havent heard of half the names past the first round). I dont know what I should be looking for with my team and was hoping you could please give me some advice on what categories I need, which players are complete bums since drafting, or some sort of idea of what Im looking for this season.
    Jeff Teague
    DeMar DeRozan
    Jrue Holiday
    Kevin Durant
    Pau Gasol
    Joakim Noah
    Jonas Valanciunas
    JaVale McGee
    Gerald Henderson
    Brandon Knight
    John Henson
    Kelly Olynyk
    Kenavious Caldwell-Pope

I know Slim recommended picking up Patrick Beverley, Alec Burks and James Anderson who are available, but until the season starts, I wont have any idea of what I need and I didnt want to start off behind the 8-ball. Thank you so much for any advice you can give me and hope you enjoy the games tonight.
Ps, sorry for the super-long post, but I didnt know what else to do and you guys have not failed me yet.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@nomaspantalones: Haha, not stupid at all! Welcome to hoops and hope you enjoy it! Your team is solid right now, pretty much any team that got Durant is solid. I do think Asts is a weakness right now, I think I’d drop Olynyk for Beverley to address that. But I’d hold everyone else. I would see how many minutes Henson gets (I think it’s 25 plus), but if he’s under 20 a game he may end up being droppable for another hot hand later. We’ll be here to answer those questions all year!

  11. Mike says:
    (link)

With the recent news that Patrick Beverley is starting, would you drop MCW for him? Also, is hawes worth more than cody zeller at this point? because it seems like zeller is not starting anymore

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Mike: Yeah I think I would. And yeah, I have Hawes ranked a few higher (although my ranks are out of date with this Beverley surge!) and think he has a solid year, especially until Noel gets on the court, if at all.

  12. Jesse says:
    (link)

Do you think trading Varejao and greivis for Pau gasol is a good idea?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jesse: Yeah I think so. I know Bynum is hurt, but I think eventually Varejao isn’t too valuable because his limited minutes. Love Gasol this yr

10 team H2H. Drop G Vasquez or Isiah Thomas for Beverley? Or drop Bogut? Or hold?

    PG Lawson
    SG George Hill
    SF Durant
    PF Horford
    C L Sanders
    UT David Lee
    UT C Parsons
BN: Bogut, Gortat, J. Butler, Vasquez, Isiah Thomas, Bogut

@!!!: Man that’s tough… I don’t want you to miss Beverley but think all those guys need to be owned. Gun to my head might roll dice and drop IT2, very close

    Hey JB!

I had a draft yesterday and wanted to see what you thought about my team. Its my first time playing hoops in the LeBron era.

    PG – Lillard
    SG – Beal
    G – Teague
    SF – LeBron
    PF – Millsap
    F – Drummond
    C – Ibaka
    C – Valanciunas
    UT – Butler, J
    UT – Harris, T
    BN – Calderon
    BN – Burke
    BN – Beverley

Would I be wise to trade LBJ in a deal for Anthony Davis and Westbrook or in any combined deal for Favors and Curry?

    • Mike says:
      (link)

@Juice_0321: I like the Favors Curry Deal for Lebron

      • Juice_0321 says:
        (link)

@Mike: I do too, but considering my novice status in hoops I am not sure if I am dealing with any glaring weakness here or even if to trade LBJ.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Juice_0321: I personally would hold LeBron in both of those deals

      • Juice_0321 says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Notice any areas in which I can improve upon? Stephenson and Nicholson are balling tonight. Maybe add one and drop Burke or Harris?

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Juice_0321: Nah I’d still hold, I don’t really buy either of those lines. Nicholson didn’t score in the 2nd half.

What moves would you make JB?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Zandy: I’d get both Jackson and Beverley and drop Varejao and Korver. Then I’d look to trade maybe Jackson if he starts real hot for another big. Hope that helps!

      • Zandy says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: You wouldnt drop Jameer? Youd rather drop korver or varejao?

        • Zandy says:

@Zandy: Henson also is available btw…

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@Zandy: Yeah I’d drop those two and wait and see on Henson. Both looking for how Ilyasova looks with the ankle recovery and how many minutes Henson gets off the bench

            • Zandy says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: You dont think Felton and Vasquez leaves me to thin at SG? Thats my hesitance in dropping Korver. I know he doesnt have upside but his 2+ 3ptrs per game basically win that category in H2H

              • JB Gilpin

                JB Gilpin says:
                (link)

@Zandy: Nah I don’t think it leaves you too thin at SG, but yeah you’d be an underdog in threes. If you keep Korver I’d still get Jackson right now of the two PGs

@Zar: I disagree on Henderson and KCP, but agree on Asik. I’m not touching him. Can’t ever fault someone for picking someone they want! I think it’s Harden #3, but not like Curry is a reach. I kinda like you’re PG heavy and if Hibbert keeps playing as big like he did last night, you’re gonna be fine.

@JB Gilpin: Had to have the hometown star on ONE team :) I took asik, wondering how he might do with dwight. If he doesn’t do well, there’s a group of people on the wire that I’ll target >=D

@jakob: Yeah I know! Henry looked pretty good. Just put out today’s recap. For tonight, I’d play Jackson over Henderson. Have a feeling he starts strong and it’s against the Jazz with all sorts of question marks at PG. Still like Henderson a lot this year, but I’d do that for this first full night.

@BCPro: With Hickson possibly starting tonight I’d hold him, but I think he’s your first drop if guys start hot. Would lose him for the hot adds of R. Jackson or P. Bev if either available. You might be a tad behind in 3s, but you can stream, and weeks where LAC only play 2-3 games you might be a little low in Asts, but Paul is going to lead the league there. Redick spaces them so much better.

DeAndre was the first guy to pop up on the Boards-N-Blocks radar for his man-sized stuff of Chris Kaman, aka GE Smith’s sidekick in the Saturday Night Live Band.
