Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Ahhhh, it’s finally that time when drafts are becoming more and more meaningful and abundant, we’ve got the REL Auction draft on Thursday, and two RCL leagues drafting this weekend which still have spots open!  Don’t forget the grand prize in RCL of Razzball gear and a permanent imprint of your team name shaved in my head.  I mean, where else can you win a fan league and brand the resident editor?  I’m not really looking forward to the looks I’m going to get (doesn’t help I’m 6’7 and people be lookin’ anyway!), especially if a team like Your Mom wins.  Ugh.

So in order to hopefully restore my honor, my second RCL team was drafted last Thursday, and I gotta say, while I’m lukewarm to my team, you RCL leaguemates were brutal.  Here’s how the draft went down (full draft results):

Round 1, Pick 4 - James Harden – Really glad Harden hopscotched a pick and made it to me at 4.  I think he’s the clear-cut #3 guy off draft boards this year, and with SG a thin position, love having him locked down as my stud.  Fear the beard, RCLers!  Fear it!  (Wooooo! That sort of confident exuberance got me Harden.)

Round 2, Pick 21 – Ricky Rubio – I was really hoping John Wall would fall to me here, but was probably overly-optimistic I’d get my first real reach in my ranks (Wall as a first-rounder is pretty anti-establishment).  So I went with the next best available in my rankings (and who I wanted either way) in Rubio.  Given an extraordinarily small sample, I wrote that I bought an improved perimeter game and he’s 3-5 from deep this preseason.  A healthy Love will only give Rubio’s dimes love.  What’s a dime in Euro?

Round 3, Pick 28 – Dirk Nowitzki – Unlike the sweet and sexy and “imuy caliente!” pick of Rubio, Dirk is old, German, and reliable.  It’s like a Mercedes vs. a…. a Fiat?  Because J Lo sings for those?  Eh, car metaphor didn’t work.  But I’ve got Dirk ranked at 23 on my board and wanted to go ahead and grab a big.  Liking my team so far.

Round 4, Pick 45 – Tony Parker – What is this, 2002?!  Yes, my last two picks were gramps and could star alongside Johnny Konxville in the sequel to whatever-the-hell he’s got coming out now, but I have Parker at 28 on my board and he’s coming off another fantastic season.  Surprised he lasted this long.

Round 5, Pick 52 – Jonas Valanciunas – Whoaaaa, JB is putting his money where his mouth is!  Yes, the Luminescent Lithuanian, picked with my lucky number in the draft (52), is going to lead me to glory.  Sure, I may have wanted Jeff Green really bad here (and I have Green ranked higher by a few spots), but that doesn’t dissuade me from a do-it, show-it boasting regarding my rankings.

Round 6, Pick 69 – Jose Calderon – Again, you guys in my league suck.  If I had gotten Tobias Harris here (went 4 picks earlier and Yahoo having him in the 80s I believe is insane) I would’ve had so much man love I might play out the Fantasy season on Brokeback Mountain (R.I.P. Ledger).  But getting Calderon here is no joke[r] and I look forward to some really elite PG play to carry me to the finals.  Shaving my own name in my head I say, my own name!

Round 7, Pick 76 – Gerald Henderson – Going with my first true reach, I was actually relieved Greg Monroe got picked a few spots ahead of me so I wouldn’t be stuck with him.  Not a big Monroe guy, but this far down woulda been nice.  Anywho, I love Henderson this year who played some real solid ball down the stretch last season – lost in the noise of the Bobcats diarrheaing their way to a 21-61 record.  “When you’re named after a stupid owner, and every year your have a lottery pick boner, diarrhea!  Diarrhea!”

Round 8, Pick 93 – Andrew Bogut – Was first hoping the long slide of O.J. Mayo might make it to me in my longer layover between picks, and then my sights were on Wilson Chandler, who i think breaks out this year.  Alas, twas not, and twas a night before Christmas where all I wanted was a healthy Bogut season.  I needed a big, and Bogut is a stat-stuffer when healthy in everything but scoring, and I’ve got scoring pretty well shored up.  Don’t fill my stocking with coal, Bog!  Wait, do they have Christmas in Australia?  I guess it would be in the middle of Summer… Never thought about how that would work…

Round 9, Pick 100 – Brandon Knight – The talent pool gets pretty thinned out once you hit triple-digits, and with Knight at 84 in my ranks with me seeing a mini-breakout, this was a no-brainer.  Kid has great upside and I think the change in scenery and the best guard he’s been paired with in Mayo will lead to a solid season.

Round 10, Pick 117 – Kentavious Caldwell-Pope – Sorry to call ya out bro, but Hobo head lice!?  Taking John Henson before I could!?  For shame! First I wanted to be angry that you took him before I could, but then saw you followed it up with Robin Lopez?!  Sideshow “worst player in the NBA“?!  I’m just bitter Henson isn’t on all my teams now.  So welcome to the fold, KCP.  With all the guards in the Detroit backcourt getting banged up, I moved KCP to 96 in my ranks in what will be a boom-or-bust rookie season.

Round 11, Pick 124 – Michael Kidd-Gilchrist – A guy I have edged in my top-100 as well, I knew I could wait on MKG, then sit back and enjoy multi-cat production.  He’s still really raw but was the youngest player in the NBA last year, and while he won’t be too much of a scorer, he’ll steal and block and share the rock!  Dude, that’s an awesome new catch phrase I’ma use this year.

Round 12, Pick 141 – Ben McLemore – Keeping it real with young upside late, McLemore has carved out a starting role and will take a lot of shots.  He went 10-16 for 23 points last night.  Not married to him, but upside.

Round 13, Pick 148 – Randy Foye – Of course someone would take Corey Brewer before me!  My Mr. Irrelevant is just that… We’ll see a game or two in, but he’s my first drop if any last-minute preseason news goes down or whoever is the hot wire pickup in week 1.

What say you, Razzball and RCL Nation?  I personally like the team, and after more introspection putting the post together, have gone from lukewarm, to just above tepid.  I don’t know if that actually means more or less, so I’ll say I like it.  Think I’ll need another big man though, and hoping I can nab one on the wire.  I think I’m definitely a playoff team and will be in the RCL running.

@Richo: Haha thanks for the clarification! Figured was the case. Was in your country, man… 12 years ago now I think? Beautiful. Loved it. Thanks for reading!

  2. Mopo says:
    (link)

There is a good chance you have the worst ft%, rebounding, and blocking in the league.
But aside from that, nice draft!

      @Mopo: sorry FG%

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@Mopo: Rebounding and blocking – I don’t think worst but towards the bottom, I don’t think my FG% is bad. Valanciunas is gonna hoot 95% from the floor!

    JB

Here is what I ended up with in the RCL last night. Can I get your general opinion on how I did?

    PG Conley
    SG Kobe
    G Lillard
    SF LeBron
    PF Parsons
    F Tyreke
    C Amir Johnson
    C Hawes
    UTIL Nene
    UTIL Danny Green

    BN: Scola, Kamen, Courtney Lee

    Thanks in advance…

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Mr. April: Solid team, love LeBron and Lillard as your core. Think you have the same issue my RCL team has and that’s not enough rebounds or blocks. Kaman will be a good boarded, but I think you lose blocks most weeks. As I will be doing in my RCL league, I’ll be targeting big men out of the gate.

  4. A Hill O' Beans says:
    (link)

Ahh, come one. You know you wanna have “Your Mom Says Hi” shaved into your head. I mean, do you really want “Razzle Dazzle”, “My Team”, or god forbid, “JB Gilpin” shaved into your head? Plus, think of how good a conversation starter it will be. All those people coming up and inquiring how you know there moms, it’ll be great!

The team looks alright, a nice mix of young and old, although it seems like its either really young or really old with not much in between. You could definitely use another big instead of one of those guards you’ve got at the end of your roster. Should be competitive though.

On a side note, your second RCL doesn’t appear to be publicly viewable as I can’t access the league page or the draft results.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@A Hill O’ Beans: Oops, yup publicly viewable now! Think I toggled that on but didn’t save…. Thanks for catching that! Haha, I’ll just be spreading the warm news that their mothers are doing great! Yeah I know, it’s just I have rooks that I like and the older vets went undervalued. Agree I need a big. All the ones I wanted late went so I went for upside, with hoping for a trade at some point or I’m sure one or two of them don’t pan out.

  5. Moe says:
    (link)

Hey there I have a question I was hoping you could help me with lol

i’m in a auction league, Its the second year and im looking at keepers and salaries and I see everyone has money, depending who they kept and spent… some more than others..

does the salary restart and will everyone have 200 or do you go by how much money you have and players you kept? if you know what I mean?
Like i have greg monrow I spent 30 on last season and Larry Sanders 1 dollar.. Ill keep Larry and leave Mon so i have more money at draft?
or maybe we all get 200 again im not sure lol

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Moe: I can’t speak to your specific league, but 99% of the time, you would have the money left over of $200-salaries of guys you kept. So if you only kept Sanders you’d have 1 position filled and $199 left. Depending on how many keepers you can hold on to also is a factor. But in most scenarios I don’t think Monroe is worth $30. Hope that helps!

  6. Clyde Prompto says:
    (link)

Howdy, JB. I like this team, especially if you plan on using the Foye spot to stream some THRAGNOFfers. What kind of projections would you give MKG? I like him a lot, but I keep reading about this Jeffrey Taylor fellow eating into his playing time. Good luck in this league, because in the other RCL The Handsome Lads are basically indestructible.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Clyde Prompto: Yeah Taylor is an issue, but a good thing about MKG is I think he’s an easy cut if the first few games don’t go well. I’d say 10/6.5/2/1/1 is about right. Nothing huge, but a lot of multi-cat games that will be undervalued. Yeah your Lads team is pretty good, I like the team I put together through trades, hopefully Burke works out when healthy…

      • Clyde Prompto says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Hahaha yeah I can’t believe you were able to unload all of your “problem” guys before the season started. I guess that’s why you’re the expert!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Clyde Prompto: Haha, just more lucky that a lot of people were checking the league! I like Mayo a lot too. My team of cyborgs is coming!

    JB –
so I’m new to Fantasy basketball, well somewhat. last year i had a co-manager and this year flying solo. I’m familar with the Razzball baseball blog. Does this have similar tools to use? I’m going to be leaning on this site very heavily this year.

Please give me an overview of what type of tools are at my disposal and your recommendations for a Newb.

    Much appreciated my man!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jay: Thanks for coming by Jay! No we don’t really have any of the wizz-bang (sp? haha) tools that Rudy puts together for Baseball. As with the Grambling football program – we’re a little underfunded/I’m a writer and editor and not a software guy that can build those things. I will be doing daily updates through the week which should be a useful tool! (Although, I hope “useful tool” is not what you think of me per se!) And there are some sites you can use for sortable stats, I usually point people to Basketball Monster and their sortable data: https://basketballmonster.com/PlayerRankings.aspx Hope that helps, and ask any questions you have through the year!

  8. Luis says:

Can I get an invite for one of those leagues? loumev@gmail.com

  9. Mr Ballstik says:

    Feedback Sir!

    Lebron
    Anthony Davis
    Cousins
    Klay (JUST missed Kemba/Ellis)
    Beal
    Jeff Teague
    Pau Gasol
    Bledsoe
    Hayward
    Felton
    Kevin Martin
    Kanter
    DeAndre

I think the odds of Cousins finishing in the top 20 warrant taking him at the start of the 3rd and forsaking getting a PG. In retrospect I’d probably grab Jonas instead of Pau and Wilson Chandler instead of Hayward. Still, I think this team can compete.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Mr Ballstik: Mannnn, Teague fell a ton. Love that you got him there. Really like that team, I buy Cousins with the upside, just not a big fan of Klay and think he went high. but like everyone else you got and agree you should be a contender!

  10. John says:
    (link)

What do you mean by RCL? Haha. So far Jonas V. stats were just mediocre along with Lowry. Solid FG but very small sample size. Do you think it will still improve once the raptors cut their rotation? I’m shopping Kobe right now and I’m looking at two very good SG in wade and ellis. I know wade is better but he’s injury prone type and I can’t afford another injury in my team. Do you think it will be reasonable to trade kobe +henderson for the likes of ellis and wade? Which do you prefer, Henderson or Drummond? Which of these group of guys do you prefer regardless of fantasy needs: Jimmy Buckets, Tristan Thompson, Spencer Hawes. Sorry For having a lot of questions. NBA is nearing its return Nd I’m kinda excited for the season. Thanks!

@John: RCL = Razzball Commenter Leagues. Here’s the post if you’re interested in starting a league or playing! http://basketball.razzball.com/2013-2014-razzball-basketball-commenter-leagues

Yeah I think Big Jonas will be fine once the season starts. Yeah I’d love if you could make Kobe and Hendo turn into Ellis and Wade. I’d keep Kobe over Ellis, but rather Wade. I know Wade is up there in age, but he’s a lot less of an injury concern than Kobe off the Achilles. In a vacuum, I’d rather Hendo over Drummond. And I’d go Butler as my pick of those three. No problem man, looking forward to the season!

Do you think we are gonna be getting a weekly buy/sell post? I could see doing a couple of posts similar to how they do it over there on the baseball side of things. buy/sell for under 50% owned is a big one but also a weekly creeper under 20% could work too. I think we could use a college post similar to the baseball minors posts. Just a few ideas. If you need 10 extra fingers to write a post or 2 I would be happy to help.

    Example Buy/Sell…
Patrick Beverley – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4kWpi2HnPU But, but, but, why would I want the Beverley Hills Cop when Houston has THE Jeremy Lin? On one hand, the coaching staff loves him. On the other hand, Lin has a healthy contract and will start. On the third hand, which is a really a giant bubble coming out of your chest, Beverley has outplaying Lin in the preseason. So how much playing time does that leave Pat Bev Devoe? I’d bet my stupid bunny suit they are in an even time share to start the year.
    In 24 minutes I project .430/.820/1.2/10.0/4.0/4.0/1.2/0.5/1.5
Did you really draft Randy Foye? Nate Robinson? Andre Miller? You do know they all play on the same team right? Mo Williams? Jordan Crawford? Sessions? Ridnour? Those guys are all POISOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON… to your fantasy team.

That link should be for a highlighted Beverley Hills Cop. I don’t know HTML well enough to make that work. I imagine it’s pretty simple.

      JB Gilpin says:

@Buddah Lovaz: We had a great writer doing Buy/Sell for us last year, but he’s not for sure returning. Another new writer might fill this post too. Long answer short, 75% I Buy we will have one. Haha. So to your question, I’ll e-mail your address you comment with, that cool? Haha like your pseudo section as well.

    • Pops says:

@Pops: Also, on the wire are Bargnani, Beverly and Bayless?

A league member wants to trade a guard for a center. He has Rubio,Hill,Leonard,Harden,JoeJohnson,Ellis,Walker and Wes Mathews?

Should I pick-up Bargnani ,and then try to trade Drummond or Thompson for one of those guards?

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Pops: Not a bad team at all! I’m just personally not a Drummond fan. If he doesn’t pan out, I think you’ll be struggling in big men especially since Brook can’t board. I’d rather Bargnani than P Pat for a move. I like most of the guards you list on that other team except JJ and Walker (for their perceived value), but since I think you’re a little thin up front I’d probably hold and hope Drummond turns out.

        • Pops says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: Thanks JB, I didn’t think my team was very good until I reread your ranking notes.
Should I use the #2 waiver move for Bargnani or see if he clears waivers?
I’m thinking if I don’t the guy that needs a center will get him.

@The Fantasy Dick: I would rather have Henson now, but think Kaman ends up with better ROS numbers. So in a fluid league with no cap on roster moves or anything, probably go Henson. I’d change your claim to get Henson and hold MKG the first week and see what happens

No cap on roster moves, but I worry someone else will grab Kaman and he might make a better back up center than Henson. But I agree, Henson should be big. I’m really counting on your expertise on Kidd-Gilchrist, he worries me, but I love the multi-cat guys. Thanks

@Brandon: Nice team! Yeah I think Kobe was your biggest reach, like everyone else especially Kanter and Butler as your last guys. The run from Lee to Valanciunas are all guys I like I think you got great value on.

@Brandon: Interesting… I like most of that team, but I think a few different picks would’ve benefitted it, don’t like Dwight at 16 or Ersan at 48 and Young at 49. Or Evams at 65. But the rest of the team I like, and if Westbrook can get healthy and be 100%, will be a tough team to beat at PG.

@Brandon: I think your team has more upside and will be healthier. But if his team has all those vets stay healthy, and Westbrook comes out his out self only a month into the season, I like his more. But that’s a lot of ifs.

I am with you on the Rubio bandwagon. Got done with a 12 man H2H league, what do you think of the squad?
    Pg – Rubio. Lawson, Knight
Sg – Harden, Henderson, D. Green
    Sf – Harris, W. Chandler
    Pf – Favors, Henson
    C – J-Val, Jefferson

    Hey JB,

Been reading your posts religiously for the past week. Thanks for all the help.

Got done drafting my team last night. Feeling a bit blah about the team. It’s not GOOD and it’s not BAD. Missed out on JV so took J.Green. Kept getting my guys stolen.

I’m In a 14 Team H2H league. I was surprised Steph fell to 8th. Was debating Ibaka or Steph but I just went for what the best choice was ranking wise. Any stats you think I’m going to lose out on? Or any stats you think I should punt?

    (8) Stephen Curry
    (21) John Wall
    (36) Damian Lillard
    (49) Nikola Pekovic
    (64) Jeff Green
    (77) Tobias Harris
    (92) DeMar DeRozan
    (105) Spencer Hawes
    (120) Cody Zeller
    (133) Randy Foye
    (148) Andrea Bargnani
    (161) Corey Brewer

@Michael: Thanks so much for reading! Hope I’ve helped just a shade haha. I hear ya on Valanciunas, I thought he’d be in the 100s when last year wrapped up and everyone would call me insane putting him in high 40s in early rankings in May. Then the hype train followed me! Yeah that’s nuts Steph went so late. Then to pair with Wall who I have as a first rounder, what a combo. I have Lillard really high too. Really really like this team. You should crush scoring but I think rebounding and blocks are your biggest holes. I love Brewer, so I think if Foye starts cold he’s your first drop for the first bih man that emerges from the wire.

@JB Gilpin: Thanks JB. Keep it up!

I can drop Foye for Biyombo, Scola, Okafor.

I love how Petes all for Biyombo which got me thinking I should drop Foye for Biyombo.

hey man look, i get it because i would have thieved you too, just sayin’.

dude don;t get mad at me when i tell you this. in one of my YAY – WHO leagues I traded Noah for Ty Lawson.

i can still pick up henson to back fill the big guy department?

Was the trade okay and should i get Henso?

    thanks

@Scrappy: Yo! Haha yeah I don’t blame em… I just have an outlet to vent! Yeah I’d do that, Noah’s groin is scurry. Then to nab Henson makes it a Noah for Lawson and Henson move and I think that’s a no-brainer. No prob!

  24. JB: Good rankings. Helped shape my opinion on a few guys I was in between on… Overall, looking forward to 2013 hoops with you. You’re a great source for fantasy hoop info, so keep up the solid work. A few quick questions.

LEAGUE – 14 team, 15 man rosters, H2H weekly redraft. Big $$, so everyone knows their shit.

    SCORING – H2H (11 categories; standard + FGM, FTM)

    DRAFTED ROSTER:
    G (3) – OJ. Mayo, G. Hill, B. Knight
    F (3) – J. Green, D. Cousins, C. Brewer
    C (2) – D. Howard, A. Drummond
    UTIL (3) – R. Jackson, I. Thomas, M. Kidd-Gilchrist
    BNCH (4) – D. Gallinari, A. Burks, J. Lamb, E. Davis

QUESTION # 1 – thoughts on the roster?
I tend to think I’m light on PG studs, but drafted some decent depth at G to help offset. Think I’m pretty solid on Bigs, but FT% will be a problem. Not too detrimental with these settings (11 categories). I think I should be pretty competitive considering the depth, plus I’m youthful outside of Dwight, the back ailing turkey. Your thoughts are appreciated.

QUESTION #2 – Here are the “best” waiver options (slim pickings):
    Courtney Lee – Bos (starting?)
    Demarre Carroll – Atl (starting?)
    Jordan Crawford – Bos (starting?)
    Tyler Zeller – Cle
    * My initial lean is to stay pat with J. Lamb and E. Davis to start, but curious your take here?

Thanks for the input and much appreciated.
    – EL BURRO

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@EL Burro: Sweet! Glad I could help. And I’ll be here all year, looking forward to it! Since I like Knight, I think you’re fine at PG without having the studs. Agree FT% will be rough for ya, I think ASTs will be too. Don’t really like any of those waiver guys, Lamb and Davis have upside so I think I hold for now. Any time man!

      • @JB Gilpin:

Yeah; I agree — I got caught on the wrong side of all the PG guards runs in the 2nd and 3rd rounds – Lillard , Wall went before my 2nd pick (back to back) and then Conley, Teague went before my 3rd. rd pick – was targeting all of them… Didn’t want to have to take the likes of Kyle Lowry :(who can never stay healthy) or Dragic (Bledsoe muddles it) early as a reach, so went BIGS instead and then went with a lot of my PG sleepers later to compensate (Brandon Knight, Reggie Jackson, Isiah Thomas). Luckily, I got all 3 or it could have been a disaster draft. Having won this league 2 of the last 3 years, I think league-mates are on to me… Think I got some work to do, but I’m set at BIGS- and as it’s h2h, I can navigate that… Unfortunately, the league is deep so there aren’t a lot of immediate impact guys. Ay ya ya. Conspiracy!

A few other guys Im curious your take on:
Thomas Robinson – backs up LA in Port, but he could be a beast with time. Was thinking maybe Por opts to go small. Lopez sucks and Leonard could be decent, but ailing. LA also ailing, I could see TRob get some run..
Lavoy Allen – could be a double/double with 1 blk type if he starts. Is he going to?.

@EL Burro: Yeah I hear ya! Lowry… such a disappointment when he gets hurt every year. I got burned on T Rob last year… man I thought he would kill on the Rockets and start and it didn’t work. Like his upside, and if LA gets traded, it might be a rebuild 2nd half a lot of run. Great guy to stash. Not huge on Allen, just hate the 76ers haha. Black hole of Fantasy!

    3. (32) Damian Lillard PG
    4. (41) David Lee PF,C

    11. (128) Kentavious Caldwell-Pope SG
    12. (137) DeAndre Jordan C
    13. (152) John Henson PF,C

    I’m concerned about 3s and Blocks ><

@Zar: Dude, I really like that team. I think every single guy you got I have ranked higher. I wouldn’t be concerned with swats at all, I think Henson will play well, DeAndre is looking better and of course Iblock-a. And if either McLemore or KCP pans out to their potential you’ll be fine from deep. Love it!

@Juice_0321: Haha it’s so funny you linked that, I saw his ranks yesterday and had a lot of O-faces. I like Davis, but not a first-rounder. Like he’s with me on Ibaka. But then the absolutely crazy. Kawhi at 10? Conley at 12? Dude stole my Teague love, but 19 is unreal. Thad Young at 33 is ugly. He put Valanciunas early which I agree with, people keep stealing that from me. Then LA and Jefferson as 6th rounders is ridiculous. I like some calls, but others are just way too out there

  26. john says:

What can you say on my move. Monta Ellis for Drummond + Lowry. I got Ellis. At least now, I can move Kobe Bryant without having problems who will man my SG slot. My team has still lots of injuries but most of them are recovering. Got excited a lil bit on Westbrook news. My team looks like this.

    Westbrook
    Jennings
    Rubio
    Monta Ellis
    Kobe
    Jimmy Butler
    Batum
    Parsons
    Tobias Harris
    Ilyasova
    Love
    Aldridge
    Marc Gasol
    Al Jefferson
    Jonas Valanciunas

Is there someone I need to move? or should I stay put and let the season roll. I’m thinking of moving Kobe for Kawhi. Thank you.
