Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Waa-Wuuuuh… That is the written version of the sad trombone. This week’s title is a flop, just like Lance Stephenson‘s excuse for flopping, amirite? He essentially said that the floor was slippery, so he embellished the contact. I love you, Lance, but c’mon son! Just say you were trying to draw the charge, no shame in that, and let that be the end of it! Lance has been flopping into our fantasy hearts this year, though, so we can’t stay mad at him. We are at the halfway point in the NBA season, and like mid-winter for us northerners, if you’re not careful, you could catch a case of the fantasy basketball doldrums. It’s harder to find the waiver wire break outs, because most of them have broken out already. You could just pack it if you let the blahs take hold. But don’t brave reader, you’re better than that! Is there still some gold to be mined out there? I submit there is. But adjust your expectations accordingly. You ain’t finding a mountain full of gold, Smaug done got got his, you’ve left picking up what’s left. So what did my pick axe knock loose this week? Have a gander:

Buy:

Rodney Stuckey PG, SG

Rodney is a perfect example of the sort of player that you can find to stream at this time of year. He scores. Thing is, he scores a lot. He has averaged 23.25 points over his last 4 games, with a very high FG% for that kind of output, and very reliable FT%. But that’s about it. No 3’s to speak of, he hit just 1 in his last 4 games. Total. But he’s only 50% owned, so have at him, if you need a boost in the scoring stats.

Khris Middleton SF, PF

Now, this cat is on the other end of the fantasy spectrum. Not a lot of points to speak of, but his thieving stats are naasty. He has 10 steals, and 4 blocks in his last 3 games! And homeboy robs from the rich, and gives to the poor, with 3 dimes per over that stretch as well. Not exactly a solid add, I would put him more in the “watch” column than the “add”, but he transitioned too smoothly from Stuckey for me to bury him at the bottom. I write to entertain, not solely to inform, and my wish is for my article to flow like urine at R. Kelley’s crib.

Greivis Vasquez PG, SG

I thought that John Salmon‘s return from injury was going to hinder Vasquez’s production, but it has not.  In his last 3 games, he has gone 14/4.7/8/1.7/0 with 2.3 long balls per. He’s 51% owned, so go grab him while he’s hot.

Ryan Kelly PF

I know what you’re saying: Who?? At least I was. I know he played for Duke, but that’s about it. But 2 things to remember, good reader: 1) the best chance you have for finding waiver solid help is for guys to get an opportunity through injury, and 2)his uniform is the colour of gold. He has been getting the start for the last 3 games, and averaging 16.6/5.5/1.25/1/.6, with 1.25 3pts per over those 3 starts. Not bad if you need stretch 4 stats.

Sell:

Terrance Ross SG, SF

Ross has risen, and now he’s fallen. Which is good for Vasquez, apparently. But if you’re holding on to the former, I would would mumble an awkward good bye, I had a great time, etc, and bounce. Until Terrance get his shooting touch back, he’s not worth holding on to.

Andrea Bargnani PF, C

Bargs is out indefinitely with a torn ligament.  An italian who can’t use his hands, he will be even less comprehendible, just sad. Bad luck though, Andrea, you were actually putting some decent games together here and there.

That’s all I have for now, folks, may all your shots fall, until nest week.

Seacrest, out!

    ROTOWORLD HATES DeRozan:

‘DeMar DeRozan was aggressive in the second half of Friday’s win over the Sixers, finishing with 34 points, nine boards, one assist and one 3-pointer in 39 minutes.
The Sixers get burned by guards quite often and DeRozan didn’t disappoint. He’s coming off a career-high 40 points vs. the Mavericks and is launching shots left and right, taking at least 22 in four consecutive games. Considering his scoring output has been so high, DeRozan’s fantasy value might be a perceived a little higher than it actually is right now. ‘

They haven’t figured out that he is a decent player, this is every write up after every game, great game, but _____

    It’s funny. Thought I’d share.

Oh, and I picked Stuckey up in 2 leagues, keep until injured?

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Matthew: I completely agree, Demar gets the shaft. In fantasy, you WANT the player who is the number 1 option on a team, shooting 20+ touches per game, so long as his percentage isn’t awful. Derosan went 10-22 last night, perfectly acceptable, and also shot 13-16 from the stripe, which is amazing. Rotoworld is insinuating that he is playing above his skill level, and that’s straight bull. That definitely happens, but in almost all cases, it’s a scrub who is getting minutes due to injury. the Lakers are happy Jodie Meeks is doing so well, but if Nash, Kobe and Blake were healthy, he would be getting a third of the minutes he’s getting, it wouldn’t be all “you earned it, dude” and sit Kobe. But Demar was clearly the man in T.O. once Gay was traded, and was the best player on that team even when Gay was still there. He’s playing at an all star level, and still he gets no love. He’s 8th in the league in free throws made, indicating his dogged determination to get to the stripe, along with shooting from all over the floor.

And Yes, I would keep Stucky until the Pistons show they’re going to someone else for scoring. Frankly, the lack of touches for Monroe is criminal.

    • Slim

      Slim says:
      (link)

@Matthew: DeRozan is a pretty solid real life player. Unfortunately his game isn’t all that fantasy friendly. Sub 43% shooting with crazy high volume is tough to handle. He’s a better FT shooter than 78% but up till now that’s what he’s giving and it’s merely average in fantasy. His turnovers are high for a wing but 3.5 assists makes it somewhat manageable. 4.5 boards are OK. Probably a little below average for a SG/SF. Less than a 3 per game is really annoying, for a wing he’s about an average steals guy, and the 0.5 a block per game from a wing is actually pretty solid. And he’s very helpful for your points, but we all knew that already. He’s currently ranked around 75 and I think that’s about right, maybe a little high. A solid contributor but incapable of top 50 value due to all the labradoodles, the FG% drain. I think Lowry should be the Toronto All-Star and he’s currently ranked in the top 20 in 9-cat.

Although it should be noted I’m not a fan of guys like Lance Stephenson, Tristan Thompson, Zach Randolph. All of which are not top 100 fantasy contributors but are currently being held onto like they are. DeRozan fits on this list too although he does just barely crack top 100.

But this is all about category leagues. Specifically 9-cat. In a points based league he’s much better, as are the others I listed above.

      • Dan A

        Dan A. says:
        (link)

@Slim: I completely agree with you, Slim. I would say that he is accurately ranked at the 75 watermark, the stats don’t lie. The only context I would submit is that his stats are noticeably better post Gay trade. In the last 10 games, he has been 23.4/6/4/1.3/.5, with 1.9turnovers, and an acceptable 38.1 3pt%, shooting 74% FT%, and 43.8% from the floor. I appreciate that players go up and down, but he should be right where he is, and is good value, at his ADP. I do maintain that he doesn’t get proper coverage due to playing in Toronto.

  2. Tyler says:
    (link)

Are these buy/sell articles for super deep leagues? I’m in a ten team and none of these players are owned anyway. I enjoy the write ups but I’d love to see some buy/sell articles about players people actually own or care to own.

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Tyler: Dude. I go by ESPN’s and Yahoo’s percentage owned. If I recommend a guy that is 80% owned, 4 out of 5 leagues will not benefit. My general rule of thumb is if a guy is 50% owned or less, but still producing, then I recommend him. You don’t want me to write: “get Paul Millsap, get All Jefferson, Get John Wall” it does you no good. Think of the article not only as “Buy/Sell” in the literal sense, but as “Add/Drop” as well.
But I appreciate what you’re saying. I will try to include at least one “go get this cat” and one “drop this bum” from now on, (I do do that most articles, but admittedly not every one), and explain why I think so for each case.
I hope this satisfies your concerns.

  3. Barenrewn says:
    (link)

Vucevic was dropped and is a FA in my league. Latest reports are he may begin playing this week. Do you think he’s worth a grab? Was playing great and a big contributor before the concussion.

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Barenrewn: wow. Yes, of course. He is a fantasy blue chipper, one of the top five bigs, IMO. Stash him!

  4. Frank White says:
    (link)

Hey Dan.. I don’t know if you have Millsap on any of your teams but you know he’s official. Even if he doesn’t score high it’s always double digits and if it’s low like that then he give’s you a rainbow line. Anyway, isn’t it so annoying when you read the Yahoo notes on him and it says ” Either he puts up a line like this one or a Dud”!! What the F are they talking about. He had one Dud in the past 11 games that I can see!! Are they ridiculous or what!!??

    • tony says:
      (link)

      @Frank White: Millsaps always underrated

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Frank White: I agree, Frank. It’s easy for a writer to downplay a player, it’s safe. It’s hard for a mainstream website to say: this cat is gold!, because if he doesn’t produce, I suppose they think they look silly. But the reality of Fantasy basketball is that there is only one KD, one LeBron, one Chris Paul. Even if you have one of these guys, you can’t win without other cats to fill out your team. And Millsap is a solid blue chip dude, one of the better PF’s in the game. It’s just plain lazy, IMO. I get hyped about players, and sometimes I’m wrong. Or I drop dudes, just before they hit. But at least I’m not saying everyone in the league, save 9 fellas, are junk.

    16 man league:

i get: marc gasol + tobias harris for my westbrook + mcw – who wins?

should bledsoe be dropped or continue to hold?

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@hamtime: That’s a lot, from my perspective. Toby and Marc are sloid, with Marc having the ability to be a top 5 Center, from a fantasy perspective, but he hasn’t put it together yet, and it may not come until it’s too late for you. Even if he was on his game right now, that’s still a steep price. I wouldn’t, unless you’re stacked with PG, and need bigs.
And Bled will likely be out for the remaider of the year, so don’t hold him, unless you have an IR spot, and even then, only if you’re in a keeper league, or have nobody else to put on IR.

  6. Chas says:

would you trade brandon jennings and marhall for james harden and larkin? this is my roster so far
walker, vasquez, jennings, marshall, rondo, batum, iggy, love, henson, pekovic, miles plumlee, derrick williams

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Chas: I would do that deal.

  7. Lasandro says:
    (link)

Shopping Afflalo and not much interest coming my way. Just been offered Redick. Trying to get Duncan. Thoughts on his value and if I should but on the Reddick offer. Essentially gunning for boards and FGM which is why I’m trying for Duncan. What’s your thoughts on the big three in SA being rested towards season’s end? Cheers!

    • Lasandro says:
      (link)

@Dan A: alternatively, I can remain patient in my Vuc and wait on his return. If I can get a dub dub outta him ROS, I’ll be sorted. But watching this magic team, it’s obvious Oladipo is rocking a lot more comfortable with putting up Stephenson-like numbers on the regular and Jameer is a very solid fantasy option for me. That’s right, I own four magic starters..!

      • Dan A

        Dan A. says:
        (link)

@Lasandro: ha! I own Vucevic as well, as well as Tobias. Fantasy doesn’t care who wins or loses, and somebody’s gotta score, right?
I will say that 4 players on your roster from 1 team puts you at a decided disadvantage in 2 and 3 game weeks. Obviously, the edge goes to you in 4 or 5 game weeks, but the former happens more than the latter. But if the rest of your squad is balanced, not too big a deal.

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Lasandro:Afflalo’s playing at a very high level, but Redick has been on fire as well, and shows no sign of slowing down. Either do the deal or maybe go after another big, because of all the players most at risk of sitting, I would put Timmy number two behind Wade. And Manu also a big risk of resting late in the season. Buyer beware. LaMarcus too expensive?

      • Lasandro says:
        (link)

@Dan A.: he’s playing at a great level yes but can the Magic continue feeding all those hungry mouths with oladipo’s emergence? Interesting you like wade more than TD? No chance of him getting shut down towards the end of the season? Plenty of games sat by him so far. LMA would be a dream but the guy who owns him would only accept a straight swap, not a 2 for 1 scenario. Plus he’s on top of the standings so has no incentive of trading. Dang. Just packaged Afflalo and Meeks for millsap, owned by a guy in need of pts and threes. Prob won’t bite, but worth a shot

        • Dan A

          Dan A. says:
          (link)

@Lasandro: If I was unclear, I think both wade and Tim will be sat a lot at the end. Certainly their minutes will be managed. And also think about a deal for deandre jordan…

  8. jg21 says:
    (link)

Russel Westbrook for Monta Ellis..which side do you like? thanks!

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@jg21: Russell clearly has more upside, but I’d take monta, for durability’s sake. Russell will be back soon, but he had been down 3 times in less than a calendar year. I hope that’s just a fluke, but the cats who go a hundred miles a minute are more prone to injury, in my totally non-scientific observation.

  9. MrOban says:
    (link)

So out of desperation I picked up Terrence Ross today (after dropping him gleefully on Friday). Trailing badly I needed a SF today. Suffice it to say it’s better to be lucky than good. But suffice it to say I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the Clip/Raptors game today.

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@MrOban: he hit 4 3s in just the first q alone, so, I guess egg on my face for this game. I’m rooting for him, so I’m not making excuses, but he has been very pedestrian for the 5ish games prior. Good for you, one for the good guys.

  10. fitz says:
    (link)

Danny boy, looking for a little advice please. Over the past few weeks I made these series of trades.

Traded Vucevic for Chris Paul (good, I think)
Traded CP3 + Sullinger for Rondo and Pau Gasol (not that good as of yet, Rondo not doing much)
Traded Rondo/Boozer/Eric Gordon for David Lee/Kemba/Jamal Crawford (pretty good, Kemba got hurt 2 days after trade)

I also have Bledsoe and Kobe stashed and Deron just coming back.

I’m in 10th place out of 12 but my team has been decimated by injuries.

Deron, Jamal Crawford, Augustin, —-Guards (Bledsoe,Kemba hurt)
Jeff Green —SF — (Kobe hurt, also SF eligibile)
Kevin Love, Pau Gasol, David Lee, Terrence Jones (F/C)

I always seem to lose blocks and steals every week. Do you see anywhere where I have apparent depth that I should target for an upgrade? This is only my 2nd year in fantasy basketball so still pretty much a novice.

Thanks, sorry for long winded post.

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

      @fitz: Hey Fitz,
I would look to ditch bledsoe, he will in almost all certainty not be a factor this fantasy year. Walker’s not out that much longer, and when he gets back, he should help with steals. If you need blocks, maybe trading one of your bigs (gasol or lee) for Ibaka? Try to ise the cache that Bryant has to get another SF, maybe.
      Hope that helps.

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@AJ: I have no solid info on their return, other than what yahoo says. Wade may come off the bench, which speaks to the knee issues, though. Gay was questionable to start today, but he should be back any game now.
It’s a sexy blockbuster type deal, but I think I may keep what you have now. Just me, but Wade is a big concern.

Would you trade Harris and Leonard for Ibaka in a keeper league? I’m short on big guys but I would have to dig deep for a replacing SF. Who of these three do you think will be the better player in short and long term?

    Thanks for a great blog!

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@MonkeyBusiness: To project how players as young as Kawhi and Harris are gonna be long tern is pure opinion, but in my opinion, I think that Leonard has the chance to be a solid fantasy staple for years to come, a poor man’s Batum, if you need context. Harris also has a high ceiling, but I reserve the right to say “whoops”, since he plays on a poor team, and there are always guys who look good on a bad squad.
Ibaka is a blue chip stud, but I don’t see any more significant growth beyond where he is. Which is on team Awesome.

      • MonkeyBusiness says:

@Dan A.: Thanks for your input! I definately see your point with Harris. Guess it also comes down to if you rather win now or later.

      (link)

@Bren: Yeah, I would, especially given the depth you have at big. Iggy isn’t bad, but Derosan just go t hurt last night, even though I said drop terrance ross, you may want ot nab him. He got 51 last night. That was a career night, don’t expect higher than 15-20 per, but he will get more touches for sure if DD is out for a bit.

No one could have seen that Terrence Ross game coming. You are on point at least 90% of the time, and I always appreciate your insight.

Is Ross worth picking up in my 10-teame head-to-head categroy league if my current team is:

    Damien Lillard (PG)
    Rajon Rondo (PG)
    Jrue Holiday (PG)
    Jameer Nelson (PG)
    Eric Bledsoe (PG, SG)
    J.J. Redick (SG)

    Marc Gasol (C)
    Robin Lopez (C)
    Marcin Gortat (C)

Darren Collison, Joe Johnson, Ersan Ilyasova, and Jared Sullinger are also available. Do you think I should pick any of those guys up, or just leave my team be?

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Adam: Hey Adam, thanks for your kind words. the only guy I can see that might be a possible drop is Bledsoe. Here’s the thing: some say he will be out for the season, and other reports say he’s gonna be back. Suns GM was quoted as saying: “it’s more likely than not” that he’ll play again this season. That is not a strong endorsement from my perspective, as the Fantasy season ends before the actual NBA season.
So if you do decide to drop him, Ross will get short term burn, as Demar Derozan is going to be out for a short while, so he’s a good pick up. Jared Sullinger has been a beast in the past, but has an injured finger, and his minutes have suffered due to that, so I would be leery of getting him for he moment. Collison Is a good play also.
      hope this helps.

  19. Jeffro says:

    Hey Dan,
My team has caught fire as Jamal Crawford, dj Augustin, and Jodie Meeks have rounded out my 12 team scoring league roster with Jennings, Lebron, Noah, vucevic, gay, bosh, and iguodala as my other starters. I have burks, Nash, and Beverley on the bench. It’s a scoring league with 2 pts going for assists. Any guys on this roster I should look to get rid of and maybe bop someone over the head in a trade?

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@Jeffro: I would consider dropping Nash, if he doesn’t produce. He should be back this week, but will have a very strict minute limitation, and likely playing behind Kendall, so he may be unproductive even if he manages to stay healthy. Beverly is another dude you may consider upgrading, as he is more of a defensive minded dude, and does not translate into fantasy too well.
Obviously, Terrance Ross looks sexy right now, But also look to see if Kendall Marshall is available, should you decide to get rid of anyone.
      Good luck!

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@AJ: Full disclosure, I’m speculating a bit here. The overall ranking for the season would put them Korver/Lopez/Morris/Ross, but looking forward, and speculating on opportunity, and situation, I would personally put them Lopez/Korver/Morris/Ross. And maybe Ross edges Morris, it’s close.
Do with that what you will.

      • AJ says:

What up Dan workin on this deal…Which side you like best? Rondo/Parker/Korver or Jennings/Isaiah Thomas/Marshall thanks

    • Dan A

      Dan A. says:
      (link)

@AJ: it all depends on whether you think Rondo will bounce back soon enough to contribute well to your squad. I think it will be hard for him, he doesn’t have the pieces he had before to help him succeed. That said, he had a great game Sunday, and flirted with a triple double, so there’s that. I guess I have to go Parker/rondo/korver, but rondo is the key to it all.

So, who to offer? Parker, Korver and one of West/Lopez/Tristan? Or you could ask him what it would take from your squad to get the deal done, and see if he’s realistic, or too greedy…
Hope it works out for you, those ore two electric players!

What’s up Dan.. Would you drop Josh McRoberts to grab Boris Diaw?? McRoberts hasn’t done great the past 2 games but gives a lot in other CAT’s and if I drop him I’ll lose a game this week. Worth it??

@Frank White: I think you punt the one game. There are all kinds of injuries in San An, and Ginobli just went down, so Diaw should get the minutes.
      Good call.
