Whoa, look at the star power we’re bringing in today! On a jam-packed edition of the Razzball Basketball Podcast we recap news and notes from the last two nights of NBA action including some strong play from D’Angelo Russell. I then sit down with former NBA superstar and coach of the Texas Legends Nick Van Exel, and we chat some of his former teammates during his playing days and what his coaching strategy could mean for fantasy hoops if he coached an NBA team. We then play another edition of Higher/Lower, preview tonight’s games with our 30-Point Challenge picks, then wrap up the week at the movies. But that’s not all! You can now join us in the movies conversation by joining the Razzball league on Fantasy Movie League! Yes! Van Exel was one of my guys the first time I ever played fantasy hoops. He and Elden Campbell > Kobe and Shaq.

@Clyde Prompto: Nice! Yeah wayyyyyy before my fantasy hoops time unfortunately. I started as a lot of people do with football as my gateway drug…

I asked him about Campbell too! Apparently his nickname is Dbo I guess since he’s huge like the guy in Friday! awesome, I was so giddy

    Hey JB,

Would you drop Ersan to stash Mirotic?
Playoffs start Mar 21 in this league.

    Lillard, Teague, Collison
    RJax, Clarkson, GHarris
    Bazemore, Ilyasova

@J: Yo! Ummm, nah I don’t think so, miro lost some strength and I bet gets eased in pretty slow

  3. Tyler says:
    (link)

Hey JB! Thanks for knocking some sense into me not to drop Blake. You rock!
Now with Miro, Hoiberg’s latest statement before Bulls game says Miro’s still a few weeks away which means 2-3weeks right? Should i now drop him for Ginobili or Alan Anderson?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Tyler: Hah no problem! And sure, he can be dropped. I dunno if either of those two are a long-term option going into the playoffs, but you can stream it and def have it open for a hotter FA to nab

  4. v00dr00 says:
    (link)

Maybe I shouldn’t be going ape-shit, but my playoff matchup just dropped Kobe for Barea(he’s just trying to stack obviously). Do I scoop him up even after his sore shoulder. I have Mack and Barnes who are droppable in this instance.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@v00dr00: Hah nah, not with Kobe this hurt, and likely getting 50% DNPs ROS, I wouldn’t even try to claim him for those guys

      • v00dr00 says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Yeahhhh, it’s just tough seeing him hit the wire and not doing a damn thing about it haha. Give him the big “O” so I can IR his ass

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@v00dr00: Hahaha yeah, when it falls off, it falls off hard for the vets!

    • v00dr00 says:
      (link)

@v00dr00: Bogut, Grant, and Hezonja are hanging around as well too.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@v00dr00: On the wire or on your roster? I’d prob take all 3 of those over Kobe…

        • v00dr00 says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: On the wire. Would you scoop any of them in place of Mack or Barnes?

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@v00dr00: Bogut for sure! He’s 3rd in the NBA in blocks per game last 30 days. Would for prob Mack. Matt or Harrison Barnes? if blocks were a pure need even after adding Bogut, then sure I would get Grant too. Otherwise, nah

            • v00dr00 says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: Matthew, my good sir! And I went ahead and added Grant for him. I’m elite in steals and 3’s already, and I’m top 3 in blocks, but why not be elite-elite there too haha. They should definitely bump me up.

              • JB Gilpin

                JB Gilpin says:

@v00dr00: Aha! Cool sounds like the right move!

If you had to roster three for overall value & upside
Looking towards the playoffs, starting after next week

    Demarre C
    DJ Aug
    Hezonja
    Beverly
    Otto P
    Bogdanovic
    Sloan

    Thanks JB!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@jcg: Otto is a clear standout, even though he’s cooled off. Then prob Beverley anddddd Sloan I think. If there is a timetable on Carroll saying he’d be back at some point before the playoffs, then he can obviously overtake Sloan Any time!

  6. Lasandro says:

And here is thought the whole special guest thing was gonna be a hoax… Holy shit man!!! I was smiling from ear to ear during the interview! So proud of you guys for getting him on there. And listening to him talking about Kobe, wow. I remember when he, Fischer and Travis knight (remember him??) came in as the 3 rooks in LAL. Wondered why they basically traded for another Eddie jones but guess things worker out. Not for knight tho haha. Well done man damn – still listening as I type this

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Lasandro: Hah thanks man! We were very fortunate, especially on his busy sched right now coaching. Of course man! Yeah Knight never panned out as much… Thanks again, was a blast getting to talk with him!

  7. Jake says:

Thanks for the podcast shout out!

Goudelock is definitely a THRAGNOF player.

Also, his name isn’t pronounced like the cheese. The first syllable is Gowd (which rhymes with Cowed). And the last syllable is Lock. Gowdlock.

And dumb Beasley will take his minutes. Sigh.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jake: Hah for sure! And yeah, I figured Gouda luck was way wrong πŸ™‚ but was fun. Yeahhhhh, Beasley sounds like he’s gonna play. What a mess in houston…

  8. Paul says:

I’m picking Klay for 30 point challenge until he gets it!

@Kevin: Hah I’m with ya man, let’s do this!

  10. The Gintern says:
    (link)

Man, that’s awesome that you got to talk to Nick Van Exel, how did that come about?? You should have asked about his crazy free throw shot!

Ugh, just got around to listening and someone else already took Kawhi… So I guess chalk me up for Klay too, might as well take the better option if I’m not taking somebody different haha. Also I feel like I need to show my solidarity with JB in standing against Slim rooting for Duke, that is just absolutely despicable behavior

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@The Gintern: Hah thanks man! Oh damn, I totally forgot about that! Lucky coincidence of friend of a friend, so it was really cool.

Damn, shoulda stuck to your guns! Stupid Klay… And yeah, that Slim is a rapscallion!

  11. Johnc says:
    (link)

In a vacuum, Would you send Luol Deng and Evan Turner for Rondo? I am assured a playoff spot sitting in second place but likely to finish third given match ups.

    • Johnc says:
      (link)

      @Johnc:
Never mind. He traded him to another team. He did offer me Deron for Elfrid. Injuries versus Skiles’ rotations. Ugh

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Johnc: Damn… Ugh haha I guess I would lean Deron but it’s an ugly comp haha

  12. Patty Mills is my Homeboy says:
    (link)

I’ll take Parsons against that stellar Kings D.
How do you rank these guysRos, Jokic, Myles, lord Cov, E Turner.

Also Blake is on Waivers but playoffs start next week with 2 rounds of 2 week match ups, I’ll finish 2nd. I think I just have to leave him out there for someone else?

Thanks again man. Can’t wait to listen to the pod later.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Patty Mills is my Homeboy: you were so close! I would rank those Myles, Coving, Turner, Jokic. So no bye week for you? Then nah, not worth the risk there… any time!

  13. tentyme says:
    (link)

In a,12 team h2h weekly league 9 cats and we don’t use TO cat. ROS Norris Cole or DJ Aug…..?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@tentyme: I’ll stick with Cole, more consistent minutes, and more steals

  14. Lasandro says:
    (link)

Why no mention of Starvin Marvin of late? I picked he and Alex Len up a few days back and boy has he been multicatting and shooting that 3 well. His combo of brds, multi 3s and upside to get a block and stl per is pretty tantalising. Strange y’all haven’t mentioned him as a must own contender.

I’m looking to trade Len for a wing/guard. Who would be a comparative target, with higher ROS upside? I’m looking at Hood, but is Burks’ return gonna hurt him? They play the same position and Alec was the man on that team for a few weeks. Maybe E Gordon? Try my luck with Clarkson, now that he has a minor injury? Anyone else? A scorer with 3s, some asts and upside for D stats pls. Trying to package Len and Teague for Kemba, but the owner won’t budge I thnik.

  15. John says:
    (link)

Portis hit the wire and I like the Bulls playoff schedule. Not sure his boards help me as I lead the league there. Not sure who I would drop. But wondered what you thought in H2H, 12 teamer:
    DeAndre, Hassan, Okafor, Gortat
Ariza, Crowder, Turner, Butler (welcome back)
Paul, Wall, Elfrid, Cole, Joe Johnson
    One streamer.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@John: Wow yeah Butler got back faster than I thought. I’m not steadfastly holding Johnson, I think he’s a cut. 1 good game and 3 pretty blah games in MIA
